AIBU to go to GP about weight?

Is it considered accetable to go to the GP for advice abut being overweight? My GP is very dismissive in general so I'm often left feeling I'm wasting his time. But would you think it is generally wasting a GP's time when the advice would probably just be to go on a fucking diet?

While generally a bit podgy, I have a huge increase in upper abdomen fat in the last 6 months. Look pregnant. Would just like to know why? Is it internal fat, am I pre-diabetic, is it my hormones/perimenopause? Think some info/advice would help me deal with it, depending on the reason. I'm even worried about ovarian cancer as I've heard that can cause stomach extension.

Or maybe I'm just fat and I should just go on a fucking diet and not waste the GPs time?

Worth going to the GP and asking for a blood test to rule out the nasties such as ovarian cancer. My mum died of ovarian cancer, and I had similar symptoms of abdominal bloating/weight gain. It turned out to be low thyroid in my case, easily sorted by taking Levothyroxine daily. Lost weight easily once the medication kicked in. Thyroid problems are very under-diagnosed.

I've never posted on Mumsnet before. You are (collectively) wise, kind and helpful! I will see the nurse as I've got a couple of other mild but concerning symptoms. However, I need the weight loss advice too anyway as the rest of me is a wee bit porky but in a way I've been before so not worrying me.

If you're concerned it may be more than obesity is go to the doc. Otherwise, probs better to start using MFP and go and see a personal trainer instead.

It sounds very reasonable to see your GP with your symptoms. It's quite likely there's nothing serious behind it but you will feel better having checked it out, won't you?
If you find it is only weight gain and nothing else I wanted to share with you some information about an online course I offer that works without diets, special exercises or willpower.
It brings lifelong results, no more weight problems and no more strict rules about what you can eat.
Oh no pills either.
Let me know if you want to know how it works. I'll get some info to you.
Good luck at the docs. Smile
