My son is 1+10 months and says: yes, no, boo, go, bye, yay, ouch.

I've seen a video of a friends DD who is saying words like 'gorgeous' and counting from 1-10 and I'm questioning my Parenting skills!

DS1 wasn’t saying anything like that at that age. He said just a handful of words until he was 2.5 then his vocabulary just exploded. DS2 was born just after he turned 3 and when the HV came to do his 6 week check she commented on how good DS1’s speech was for his age! He’s 4 next month and very articulate.

My 1 year 10 month nephew can say:

Mummy
Daddy
Hot
Gone
No
Tan oo - means thank you, used properly, but just can't enunciate the whole thing!
Bye bye
Car
Cat
Dog
Up

Not really stringing understandable sentences together yet.

Is your friend’s DD exactly the same age? Because the difference in DS’s speech between 21 months and 2 years was phenomenal!

MutantDisco · 01/01/2019 11:47

DS1 was an early (and prodigious!) talker, he has suspected ASD at 6 years old.

DS2 has only just started talking, really, he's 31 months. He doesn't seem to have ASD traits.

MutantDisco · 01/01/2019 11:50

DS2 btw wasn't talking at all at the 2 year check but the HV wasn't worried in the slightest; he put his finger to his nose when she asked him where it was!

Dc 1 at 22 months I was worried that she would not make 50 words by 24 months. She had said a two word sentence at 1 year 2 months then nothing much else after. In the two months between 22m and 24 m she started using lots of words and was using way more than Han 50 words.

Dc two taught himself signs from something special did not have 50 words at 24 months and had speech therapy.

The difference in parenting: sang everything to dc1 dc2 hated singing, still does as has SPD and ASD.

He has an extensive vocabulary now. Not all of it good.

I think this is a fairly normal amount of words at that age, some children will be miles ahead of the curve and others will barely be saying much at all by 2. My little boy was saying some single words and just started to make short sentences right before his second birthday. He is now almost 27 months and has recently had an explosion in his language skills (probably why they do the 2 year check around this age). He is now picking up new words on a daily basis, forming longer sentences and singing some nursery rhymes. A favourite is wheels on the bus and can sing ‘horn bus beep beep, all day long’ in one hit along with other lines. Try not to worry but if he is approaching his check and not making and leaps and bounds with his language then mention it to the HV.

By 2yo DS was saying a few words and a but of gibberish that only I understood. He had intensive SALT at 3 and is now an articulate and bright 5 year old.
By 2 Dd was chatting away in full sentences, counting and all sorts. She's 3 now and not much has changed really.
They're all different and at 2 it doesn't mean a lot really.

Ineedtonamechangenow · 01/01/2019 12:07

My ds1 is turning two this month. He has a fair few nouns but doesn't string anything together. I figure he's within the realms of normal

deptfordgirl · 01/01/2019 12:08

My ds is 2 and 9 months and says a lot now. I can have fairly detailed conversations with him. However this has only really been the case for the last few months. At 2 he wasn't saying very much at all. My nephew didn't say anything until 3 and is now a clever teen.

RaiderOfTheKitchenCupboard · 01/01/2019 12:41

My 22 month old has a slowly growing vocabulary, mostly food-related, but a few animals, vehicles and shapes thrown in. One of his first words was “star” which he shouts whenever he sees one (we’ve been hearing it a lot recently). His latest is “gock moooooousse” (chocolate mousse) which he’s picked up from his big brother and must be yelled at high volume repeatedly or we couldn’t possibly know he wants to eat chocolate (he doesn’t care about mousse). He also learned “noooze” (nose) recently which he likes to shout while jabbing you in the face. It’s a wonderful age, isn’t it?

SisyphusHadItEasy · 01/01/2019 12:42

Neither of my children were saying much meaningful yet at that age.

However... once they started, they launched into full sentences right away. It seemed like they were saving it all up.

Now, I can't get either of them to hush.

He's young, and boys have a tendency to talk later and move quickly into sentences when they do start. As long as you give him the opportunity to talk, he will when he is ready.

monkerina · 01/01/2019 13:55

My DS was saying Daddy when he was 2, that was all, although he was using a number of signs. By 27 months he was at around 100 words and now at 34 months I can't shut him up, complete sentences, counts to 30, pretty much forgotten all his signs. I wouldn't worry!
