GETTING UPSET OVER A WASP???

Flavourofthemonth123 · 01/01/2019 04:49

So I was over at a friend's house today with our two LO's this afternoon for a lil New Year's celebration (mostly for them, I find new years a bit naff). We were sitting there and all of a sudden a wasp flew at her child (I was mostly shocked to see one in December!) I swatted it down on the floor and stepped on the bastard (it was on the kitchen tiles, so no squishy bug remains mushed into the carpet.) She was a little bit upset that I squashed the wasp in front of her child, saying she doesn't condone killing bugs. I said that a wasp is different from a spider or a snail because they can sting the LO's (I also squash other bugs lol but that's not the point!)

It wasn't a huge deal but I was just surprised at her reaction! Am I alone in thinking that getting upset over a dead wasp is a bit unreasonable? If there was one hoovering around your little one would you hesitate to smoosh him??

Wasps are spiteful bastards.

I was minding my own business once and one came and stung me on my leg.

So no sympathy here.

(I do, however, relocate spiders)

Ruffina - I'm in the 'no harming insects' group but will treat head lice (haven't had to yet but would if needed). For several reasons: they would cause a child intense itching, they could be socially excluded because of it, and school would demand it. Not everything's black and white ffs! Surely it's not difficult to understand that some of us just try to do the best we can on a daily basis?!

Mummylife2018 · 02/01/2019 13:37

My Uncle was killed by a Wasp - He wasn't even allergic.........

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/01/2019 13:56

2yr old ds2 once fought a wasp for an ice lolly

Ds was stung on the lip

Technically he won!

AmericanEskimoDoge · 02/01/2019 14:04

I'd probably be too scared to squash it (afraid it would fly up at the last second and sting me), but I'd want it dead.

I have no patience with wasps. If they stay out of my way, fine, but if they keep coming close or get into the house, they're goners.

fromnigeriawithlove · 02/01/2019 16:44

@Maybe one day large aliens will land on earth and squash us because they find us annoying

There are a few people on this earth that I would love to see squashed too so maybe this wouldn't be a bad thing!

Mia184 · 02/01/2019 16:57

I fed them until November and they were incredibly calm.

AlexanderHamilton · 02/01/2019 17:00

I’d have been too afraid to kill it as I have a wasp phobia but I’d probably vacate the room and get dh to get the fly spray out.

LuluJakey1 · 02/01/2019 17:06

Mia Great photo with all their little faces reflected in the water. Is it sugar water? I've never heard of anyone feeding wasps.

Flowersandbirds · 02/01/2019 17:34

I hate people killing insects/animals that annoy them. I think it’s unspeakably arrogant and sets an awful example to kids.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 02/01/2019 17:39

People who kill insects are not my kind of people, I wouldn't be friends with you.

Oh thankgod. Imagine having to be friends with such a drip.

Flowerpower220394 · 02/01/2019 18:05

I don't like wasps but I wouldn't risk trying to kill it by squashing it for fear of it turning on and stinging me. I would of swatted it away, evacuated the room and use fly spray to kill it and leave the room while it died. It's much better the wasp dies than it stings a small child or anyone else.

AtomicSquirrel · 02/01/2019 18:11

Don't understand people who feel the need to kill other things just because they are an inconvenience.

dragonara53 · 02/01/2019 18:24

Wasps are nasty we kill them. Bees on the other hand we encourage to come into our garden and we grow plants they like. Spiders are caught and put outside whilst flies get whacked with a newspaper. Some insects are good others are just pests. We also save butterflies and moths and put them in safe places away from our cats.

mumda · 02/01/2019 18:33

I have friends who would tell you how important wasps are for the environment. It doesn't stop me killing the buggers when they're in my spaces.

Mymomsbetterthanyomom · 02/01/2019 18:39

Smash them suckers every single time!!
That mama better get herself together if she thinks killing a wasp is a big deal🤣

Sparkles07 · 02/01/2019 18:41

Smoosh it! Smoosh all the wasps!! YANBU

liverbird10 · 02/01/2019 18:56

All this fuss about a bloody wasp! People are nuts.

LordPickle · 02/01/2019 19:09

What the actual fuck? I'm astounded by how many people wouldn't kill a WASP in a house. I don't know anyone that would find a humane way of directing a fucking wasp out of the house just to spare the children the horror of watching a shitty, stinging wasp die. This thread is bonkers.

Fuck the wasps. ✊

Beamur · 02/01/2019 19:15

Haven't RTFT. Likely to have been a queen wasp you killed as all workers tend to die off.
I'm no fan of wasps up close but they are hugely beneficial insects who only really get cranky late summer (it's to do with when the queen stops feeding them a certain food so they go looking for sweet alternatives)
I've had a nest near my front door, although I'm not sure it survived the summer. Not one wasp in the house.

Beamur · 02/01/2019 19:16

Also when you kill/attack a wasp it emits a chemical panic signal that attracts more wasps...

jane251 · 02/01/2019 19:18

I think you did exactly the right thing.Had the wasp stung the child it could have gone into shock-it might even have been fatal.
Can't believe all the nonsense being spouted by other posters!!!

ineedtocalm · 02/01/2019 19:25

Is it wrong to be laughing at everyone saying ‘I wouldn’t be friends with you for killing a wasp’ 😂😂 this post is hilarious.
OP your friends might get you put away for murder! Watch out

onefootinthegrave · 02/01/2019 19:28

TaytoJenny I must have spat him out after he stung me, so he was on the bed when he got me a second time. I think my dad killed him after that. Or maybe not - it wouldn't suprise me if that fucker had a bit of cockroach in him and is still alive today!

Frazzledstar1 · 02/01/2019 19:45

Why can’t we kill wasps in front of children, will they become serial killers???
