AIBU to think that NYE television coverage has hit a new low this year?

I guess it's hard to get A listers/top acts to perform live on TV for a NYE show, as they've probably got better things to do, would charge huge amounts and don't need the money anyway, but I can't help thinking that last night's TV offerings were particularly dire. We tuned into The Last Leg, which had a NYE special on (though I suspect it wasn't actually live). There were some funny moments, but the live band were doubling up as a weird comedy act and got things badly wrong, IMO. They performed a "funny" song they'd written about Spanish Flu, citing that it had killed millions of people. I know it was 100 years ago so nobody alive would be mourning those deaths now, but I couldn't see anything humourous in the subject matter at all. It was just odd, as were all the other silly things they did. At least the main presenters and Johnny Vegas was amusing at times.
We turned over to watch the Graham Norton Show. That was OK, until Catherine Tate appeared, doing her 'nan' character, and told a vile unfunny story which involved an old lady who'd shat herself in the theatre. The character is revolting and unlikeable, and the story was cringeworthy and not funny. Anyone who cares for elderly incontinent people will surely agree that there's nothing funny about it and many old people are mortified by the indignity of it. Mocking the afflicted is just horrible.
We enjoyed watching the fireworks in London, but felt the background music was very poor. The music seemed to be geared towards the under 25 age group, it just sounded like noise pollution to me.

AIBU to think that considering that most of these TV offerings are pre-recorded anyway, the people organising this entertainment could have done better than scraping the barrel in this way?

I think we do the best fireworks in the world but the choice of music is always baffling.

Valkyries · 01/01/2019 08:15

I used to go to stay with nan on NYE in the 1970s - the telly on then really was dire! Watched a bit of Jools, then the fireworks then went to bed while husband picked up various offspring from parties.

I think the Christmas TV was dire and I never watch NYE tv I’m fuckin sick to death of Jools Holland, Madness et al. I think it’s taking the piss the rubbish that is out on. Apologies if JH was not on the tv last night but he has been every other NYE.

Missingstreetlife · 01/01/2019 08:36

Holland live but also worse than usual. All crap, happy new year!

exLtEveDallas · 01/01/2019 08:41

We had a party at home and everything stopped for Madness! We loved it, had the TV blaring and us oldies bouncing about teaching the teens how to dance. Best NY for a long time (but oh my aching head this morning)

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 01/01/2019 08:47

I really enjoyed Madness, Graham Norton was ok, improved once they got Olivia Colman and Nicholas Hoult on.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 01/01/2019 08:49

I don’t think NYE tele has ever been great, but I did receive a BBC email several weeks ago, inviting me to apply for studio tickets for the filming of JH.

Graham Norton was spoiled by Kiera Knightly for me.

IrmaFayLear · 01/01/2019 09:15

I have the best idea:

Tune in to TV5Monde and watch the French new year variety show. The absolute best point being that you can raise a glass and retire to bed... an hour early Grin

rookiemere · 01/01/2019 10:01

The worst bit for me was the Lulu NYE thing. Since when was Lulu deemed to be a headliner for a pivotal evenings entertainment on terrestrial tv - answer should have been about 1974.

Surely they can pull the stops out a bit and get some genuine stars for the evening- even Robbie Williams would have been better than that.

He did do it 2 years ago.

Yabbers · 01/01/2019 10:08

I’m fuckin sick to death of Jools Holland
To be fair, he is only ever on at New Year.

Like all New Year only programmes, I always wonder if they are so good, why are they only on once a year?

RandomlyChosenName · 01/01/2019 10:19

I do miss the old news review of the year NYE programs. They used to have the right level of humour and seriousness and NYE should be about looking back at the old year and looking forwRd to the new one.

I’ve never understood why BBC wants to show other people’s parties on NYE.

And I was VERY disappointed with BBC and the fireworks this year. They only switched to London/ Big Ben 17 seconds before midnight. It should have been a whole minute at least, or even 5. Instead they had Stacey Dooley rabbiting on and they almost missed it.

StoorieHoose · 01/01/2019 10:22

Count your lucky stars you weren’t in Acotland. The only ‘star’ BBC Scotland could get was Alisha Dixon singing songs at least 15 years old then apparently she ruined an Areatha Franklin song

We watched The Shining

Hubanmao · 01/01/2019 10:22

Olivia Colman was great on Graham Norton. Now she’s someone who’s genuinely funny. Catherine Tate gets on my tits - not funny at all, and her old woman character is frankly embarrassing. Nicholas Holt and Guy Pearce good value. Kiera Knightly giggly and irritating. Is she a mother? Does she have a daughter? really? A mother? A parent? Goodness I’d never have guessed, she only mentioned it 25 times...

Madness... yeap, Suggs is well past his best but at least he looked like he was enjoying it, and they did do some great tunes.

Stacey Dooley and Joe Sugg looked very uncomfortable presenting... bad choice there (though I’m a Joe fan, and think he’s great; he was just out of his comfort zone there)

SirNilsOlav · 01/01/2019 10:25

The fireworks from around the world were shown on the BBC news channel this year, we watched that and it joined BBC1 for the London fireworks.

I used to love the Clive James reviews. I’d like to see a version with someone like Jack Dee. Let’s face it this year has provided plenty of material.

VickyEadie · 01/01/2019 10:30

I mentioned this on another thread yesterday, but the worst ever year on TV at NY was 1999. BBC from noon onwards on 31 Dec was "12 hours to go: fireworks going off and people woo-hooing in Auckland..."; "11 hours to go: fireworks going off and people woo-hooing in somewhere an hour later than Auckland...", etc etc.

ManicUnicorn · 01/01/2019 10:33

TV all over Christmas this year has been the worst I can remember. Absolute crap. Remember when they used to do Christmas specials and one off dramas series that would run every night over the Xmas period, and big movie premiers? This year I feel they've given up. Last night the BBC actually showed an old episode of the Two Ronnies sketchbook in prime time! Bare in mind Ronnie Barker has been dead since 2005...

staydazzling · 01/01/2019 10:33

i thought madness were just too old, they were before my time like but still wittering on about young people get an education Confused ok grandad!

maddiemookins16mum · 01/01/2019 10:35

We watched Madness and enjoyed it. I miss Andy Stewart and the proper Scottish Hogmanay show that used to be on when I was young (although I could be imaganing that).

Butcowsdontgetmarried · 01/01/2019 10:35

I liked the Last Leg but totally agree that the Horne section band (led by comedian Alex Horne) and the Spanish Flu song was weird and inappropriate. At some kind of Footlights review show “fringe theatre” it might be funny but not on C4 NYE as a gang of unknowns, alongside some actually well-known quick witted funny people.
Also - I think personally it was as funny and clever as Richard Stilgoe’s comedy songs, as in, not at all.

RoboticSealpup · 01/01/2019 10:40

Madness... Bloody hell. They couldn't have dug up anything more irrelevant if they'd tried.

Bringbackthestrioes · 01/01/2019 10:40

Holland live but also worse than usual. All crap, happy new year!

Not even live Shock

It hasn't been live for a number of years.

winsinbin · 01/01/2019 10:43

I can understand that when we only had 2/3 channels to choose from people might complain about NYE tv but with all the choice we have nowadays it seems ridiculous. There are literally 100s of channels to pick from as well as catch up tv services and subscription sites like Netflix.

I went out and got home about 11. DH was watching an ancient black and white gangster movie and then we watched a not quite so ancient Top of the Tops. It wouldn’t be everyone’s preferred viewing but it suited us. We effectively created our own perfect channel like we do any other night we watch tv.
