GP delaying MMR

13 month old DS due MMR on Wednesday. Just had a call to say the nurse able to administer this has left and they cannot book another until MID-FEBRUARY.

I'm fuming but no amount of reasoning seemed to work and apparently, there are no other options available to us, apart from registering with another surgery, which are in short supply in our local area.

At the same time, he is due Hib/ Men C, Pneumococcal and Men B. Most of these are boosters and everything I can find on the NHS website says they need to be administered between 12-13 months...will it be okay to leave them another 6 weeks?

Would it be unreasonable to wait?

All of my DDs injections were delayed by between 2 and 6 months, didn't do her any harm. She had her booster MMR at 18 months old.

DD is having hers at 14 mo as they couldn't do it whilst she and I were ill. It's not a big deal, better late than never.

I thought getting jabs slightly older age had better chance of immunity taking. imho it's strange to stress about 6 week delay.

honorariam · 31/12/2018 14:57

Oh right! Maybe I'm being a bit too PFB but he was due them in Nov when he turned one but delayed until after Christmas initially. That's part of the reason I was worried about putting them off even longer.

We delayed DS’s MMR as it was scheduled for Christmas (early Dec Birthday). We’ve now had to delay again as he’s on antibiotics. Will just get it as soon as we can.

honorariam · 31/12/2018 15:03

@MaryShelley1818 how old will your DS be when he has it?

DD had her MMR at 16 months. It made no difference.

honorariam · 31/12/2018 15:05

Does it also not make a different to the boosters? Can't too much time elapse between the first and subsequent doses?

It’s not ideal but if they have no earlier appointments then it’s hard to see an alternative

MaryShelley1818 · 31/12/2018 15:06

Between 13-14mths hopefully :)

honorariam · 31/12/2018 15:08

Ah okay Mary: DS will be 15 months mid Feb.

I can understand frustration at the delay if it was delayed during the Christmas period when your DC may mix more with others. I think just book in for the MMR as soon as you can and keep an eye out for any contacts that maybe an infection risk ( eg those not vaccinated).

NailsNeedDoing · 31/12/2018 15:17

Don't worry about the booster, it's not really a 'booster' at all, they only give a second MMR to catch the tiny percentage of children for whom it didn't work the first time. It's a pointless injection in the vast majority of children, it's just cheaper and easier to give it to all children twice rather than test every child's immunity to check which ones actually need it again.

Orlande · 31/12/2018 15:23

Don't panic!

Dc3 had all her initial vaccinations 2-4 weeks late and MMR 2-3 months late due to appointment availability, illness etc.
