to not repair 30 year old Dualit toaster

I've had my Dualit 3-slot toaster for nearly 30 years.

Repaired it twice in that time. Once about 15 years ago, can't remember why. Most recently, about 4 years ago, had to get an element replaced. Local electrical repair shop charged £40. Felt expensive.

Another element has gone now. This time I'm tempted to buy a new, cheaper, model.

(The replacement for this one would be £150, which I can't afford now).

You could go online and get an element and replace it yourself. It took us about 1/ 2 an hour, and about £10. It wasn’t hard to do. But you might just want a new toaster.

Sending kind thoughts OP, please let us know that you get through this okay.

I too have just replaced a part (timer switch) in my 25 year old Dualit. At the time £170 was a ridiculous price to pay for a toaster but we lived somewhere with some dodgy electrical wiring and had burned through 3 cheap ones in a year!

Personally I would never buy a cheap one now. If this dies and can’t be repaired I’ll invest in another Dualit (or other industrial type) as it’s better for the planet than the ‘disposable’ ones I kept having to buy before.

Yes I think the first repair was the timer switch.

Agree about buying things that last... but 30 years is a long time, no?

Was thinking about getting a Dualit "Lite" which is less than half the price. But probably lasts half as long.

Maybe will attempt the DIY repair first though...

I bought my original Dualit when I was in my 20s as the previous cheap plastic toaster it replaced literally caught fire, and set fire to my kitchen ...

You can get a dualit toaster for £60 I admit possibly not the same one or as good . I'd just buy a new one .

Replacing the elements in a Dualit toaster is really easy. I get the elements from the dualit website. They're cheapest from there I think, even with the £5 postage fee.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 31/12/2018 12:28

You'll not get a better toaster new. They used to build things to last. Repair if you can. Cheap toasters are shit.

SoupDragon · 31/12/2018 12:29

You just undo the base, undo the screws holding in the broken element, slide it out, slide the new one in and then replace all the screws.

Thank you all for bolstering my resolve on a DIY job!
