Flight cancelled

I was due to go away on the 20th December from Gatwick, the day of the drone problem... My flight was cancelled and I had to find alternative last minute travel to my destination.

I have put in a claim for a refund for the cancelled flight and the payment for the alternative travel. AIBU to contact my travel insurance company for compensation?

If the airline are refunding you then you can't claim on insurance for the same thing.

Sirzy · 31/12/2018 09:55

If your getting a refund you won’t be out of pocket so what are you trying to claim for?

RedDwarves · 31/12/2018 09:57

You can't double dip. If the airline is refunding you, what are you hoping to claim on?

Train tickets from Gatwick to Victoria that we didn't get a receipt for, food at the train station...

All of this I have on my bank statement, it's only around £30-£40 but unfortunately I didn't get the receipts for these

Sorry, it wasn't clear in original post. I don't want to claim for the flight and alternative travel again, just the bits they wont refund without a receipt but I could prove on a bank statement

Good chance it is beneath the excess and having had to claim from travel insurance in the past they will discount the good as you would have had to have fed yourself any way. The train ticket the hassle it will involve will not be worth it.

JaiNotJay · 31/12/2018 10:03

But won't your excess be more than that? I don't think you've got much chance of the travel insurance company paying out.

LIZS · 31/12/2018 10:04

Insurance companies were stating the incident was not a covered risk anyway. Without receipts
I think you will struggle.

Ma15x · 31/12/2018 10:04

Fair enough. Thanks everyone. I'll just leave it and hope they accept the claim for the alternative travel!

If it’s only £40 you’re trying to claim surely they wouldn’t pay out because it’s under the excess threshold?

Ma15x · 31/12/2018 10:05

It was around £30-£40 each for train tickets, underground & food/drink. We were travelling for an additional 7 hours when our flight would have only been 50 minutes

It all depends on if you have travel disruption on your travel insurance as most policies don't.

I had flights booked to USA with Primera and was due to travel just weeks after they went bust.

My credit card company refunded the cost of the original flight and I was able to claim on my travel insurance for the internal lost flights (had to fly to a different airport on a different day to original plan so had to change most of my itinerary).

I was only able to claim out of pocket expenses for things I had receipts/proof of booking for.

Always worth getting in touch with your travel insurance as they are likely to accept the rail tickets as proof of travel.

You will also have to get a letter of No Show from your airline as proof of cancellation isn't proof of not travelling as they could have moved you to another flight.

Hi. We were also caught up in the chaos. Our flight moved from Gatwick to Heathrow so I am trying to claim the cab fare between the two airports, refund for the airport lounge that we couldn't use, and then the fee back for prebooked seats that we weren't given on the new plane.

Unsurprisingly, we haven't heard back yet. We were extremely lucky to get a flight at all but now about £300 out of pocket. They also ignored our special assistance booking for our disabled daughter too so not giving up too easily.
