To allow my kids to set off bonfires for new years.

i have 1 girl (20) and 2 boys aged, 12 and 14. They say lots of their friends and people from school will go to the park tonight around 9pm to set off fireworks. But i think its dangerous whereas DH says its fine. My daughter bought them all kinds of fireworks even though i specifically told her not to. The reason i feel IABU is because they say all their friend parents let them.

Yanbu no way would my kids be going anywhere near fireworks that we're not organised at that age! They're so dangerous and it doesn't take 2 seconds for it to go horribly wrong.

Kids and fireworks.... injury waiting to happen. Supervised by an adult letting them off..: fine..: no adult.... then it’s a no brainer for me.

Google some firework injury images and I am sure your DH will have a diff opinion

It’s illegal and so, so unbelievably dangerous. Anyone letting children set off fireworks is an absolute imbecile.

I am not sure this thread rings true. Surely no parents would allow their children to have fireworks in the park, and surely your 20 year old has far better things to be doing on NYE.

I work with teenagers and can confirm that there are plenty of parents out there who have no idea where their DC are and what they're up to in the evenings and some who simply don't care. Sad but true.

OP, YANBU. I would be very upset with your DD and DH for encouraging such dangerous behaviour if I was in your shoes.

Hmm

"All our friends parents said it's ok" must be the oldest trick in the book. The friends probably told their parents they were going to someone's house for a display, rather than admitting it's at the park.

It's illegal to set off fireworks in a public place without permission. It's illegal for a 14 year old to set off fireworks, not too mention incredibly dangerous and reckless.

Put your foot down and don't let them go.
