GP appointments

My GP surgery uses a triage system where you have to ring in from 8.30am to speak to the receptionist about why you want an appointment, the GP rings you back at some point during the day, asks you why you want to see them and then offers you an appointment.

I work! So 8.30 onwards is not convenient.

One of my DC has a non urgent need to see a GP for his acne. A pharmacist has already told us what he needs but he was powerless to prescribe anti-biotics, has to see a GP. DC is at a school a half hour drive away, which means to get him to an appointment could take up to an hour. Over the last few months, and especially when he's not been in school, I've rung the surgery from 8.30am. I get the usual recorded message then told to hold if I wish to make an appointment for that day. The phone then rings for exactly 3 minutes before cutting off. I've spent up to 2 hours redialling the surgery (no queue system) before giving up.

I took my son into the surgery last week, only to be told that I'd have to ring the following morning for an appointment. I asked if his name could be added to the call list for the following morning to be told no, I'd have to ring in. He could be treated by the practice nurse, but the nurse is only in once a week!? And the next appointment would be the 9th of January!

This is not a complaint about the receptionists, just about the whole crap system of not being able to make a non urgent appointment in advance.

This post prompted me to make a gp appt and I got one for end of next week. He said I should try for cancellation after tmw.
I could’ve had one next Weds but it’s in my working time so impossible. I think a week is standard for non/urgent though really.

830 is school run and commuter time. So unreasonable.

Same here. Apparently if I want an appointment I need o ring at 8am. No advance appointments available, only same day. I have tried 100s of times, get put in a long queue for 40 mins+, by which time I've cut off anyway as I've gone under a tunnel on the tube or something. The only other option is to queue outside the surgery at 8am. Which I can't do because I'm on my way to work. It's ridiculous. I need to see the doctor just to get a repeat pill prescription. I genuinely don't see how this is possible unless I take a day off work to queue for an appointment in the morning and then attend whenever they give it to me that day . Seems like a great way to run an essential service Envy

Nutellalove - unfortunately, services previously provided in sexual health/family planning have been cut as well, a repeat pill prescription would have been ideal for that.

I agree with pp about sleepwalking into privatisation like with dentistry. It may be ok to do things online for a one-off easy thing if you can afford £25 or whatever but what happens for complex stuff, people with many conditions, follow ups from hospitals etc.

Ours is online and usually within 10 days if non urgent. Or you can ring at 8 and depending on what it is the doctor can ring you back, see you the same day or come in straight away. It's the best surgery I've been too and all the staff are lovely.
