Was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to help a child with there weight.
My dd is 6 and has gained nearly 3kgs since the start of December. She has asd and has the worst diet. Right now the only thing she will eat is crackers and cucumber. We have tried different classes but she is now refusing to go to any. We have tried taking her out for a walk everyday but if she sees a dog she has a meltdown or if the traffic is too loud.

Crackers and cucumber are not particularly calorific, can they explain a three kilogram gain in a month? It sounds excessive. Could there be a physical reason for the rapid weight gain? I’d start with a visit to the GP.

Are there any kinds of activities she likes? Swimming? Football? Cycling? Dance?

If traffic is too noisy do ear defenders help? The dog phobia is more difficult to overcome but if you think she isn’t ready some dog training clubs run sessions for people who are scared of dogs. Maybe they would be willing to help on a one to one basis if a group is overwhelming for your DD.

Yes you should go to the GP. Weight gain may be due to something else.

Bunnybigears · 30/12/2018 22:02

Can you take her swimming no dogs there. How can you put on 3kg woth just crackers and cucumbers? I agree a trip to the Drs sounds in order.

Biscusting · 30/12/2018 22:05

That’s really tough with asd in the mix. Definitely see the GP, assuming no underlying issues for the weight gain, they may have resources to help you.

Would she play on a trampoline at home?

xyzandabc · 30/12/2018 22:11

Does she actually look like she's put in 3kg in a month? That's likely to be over 10 - 15% of body weight in a 6 yr old. On a diet of crackers and cucumber she's have to be eating huge quantities I'd have thought.

How is she being weighed (and why is she being weighed monthly) and are you completely confident the scales were accurate both times?

smokealarm · 30/12/2018 22:16

Just crackers and cucumber? Doesn't add up OP.
Trip to the GP might help.
Ear defenders were a great suggestion upthread.

NeedAdvice12345 · 30/12/2018 22:19

She goes swimming twice a week but only lasts about 20 minutes in the water and she isn’t really swimming more just splashing about.
Yes she does look like she has gained the weight that’s what made me weigh her tonight. She was 23.1 kg on the 3rd of December and is now 26kg. She gets weighed every 8 weeks for medication she is on. Will phone the gp in the morning.

Weighing in the morning is the best time - evening weigh ins are notoriously inaccurate!

Leeds2 · 30/12/2018 22:34

Phoning the GP is a good idea. Maybe after weighing her tomorrow morning? The medication may be the source of the weight gain, as if she is just eating crackers and cucumber (and no chocolate, crisps, fizzy drinks etc), I would've expected weight loss.

NeedAdvice12345 · 30/12/2018 23:07

Definitely no fizzy drinks, crisps or chocolate she doesn’t like anything like that. Have checked her medication and one of the side effects is sudden weight gain so that could be it as her dose was increased on 3/12/18.

She'd have to eat a lot of crackers to gain so much, think she needs about 1500 calories/ day so far more likely to be the medicine.

crimsonlake · 30/12/2018 23:47

You have answered your own question, you say the medication causes weight gain?

NeedAdvice12345 · 30/12/2018 23:49

She has been taken it since February without any weight gain. Even with the increase it still seems a massive amount to gain in 4 weeks.
