To say no to this??

Basically we own a property in the Lake District (uk) which we use throughout the year (we co own with BIL&SIL) and they obvs use it too. We used to let friends use it for a minimal fee but to be honest it was being abused (mostly by BILS friends) so we put an end to it.

A good friend of mine is doing a charity fundraiser (an auction of sorts) and has asked would we give the property over for a week as one of the prizes. I didn’t answer there and then I just said I would have to double check with BIL/SIL but if I’m being honest I already know that my answer is no. I just don’t want the hassle of someone I don’t know using it 🙈 and I don’t want to set a precedent now as such. AIBU??

Hell no. I know far too many people with horror stories from similar requests!

HolyMountain · 30/12/2018 13:02

No I wouldn’t.

Don’t feel obliged because it’s a charity fundraiser , it’s a family holiday home and if you don’t want to don’t offer it.

redexpat · 30/12/2018 13:02

No, we longer lend it out.

Job done.

Iloveacurry · 30/12/2018 13:02

I would just say no, and explain as you have above.

Sirzy · 30/12/2018 13:03

You don’t let anyone else use it so I wouldn’t change that for a stranger

Babdoc · 30/12/2018 13:03

Well you have an easy “get out of jail card” here, OP - simply say you consulted the relatives and they’ve refused. That way, you won’t be regarded as uncharitable, and the house remains uncontaminated by strangers!

Yesornono · 30/12/2018 13:05

@Babdoc yes I could say that but they do have a slight link through friends and I would be really paranoid they may find out I lied!! 🙈 I think I may make a donation instead as planned

Another vote for no. There is no incentive for the winners to be respectful of your property as they are not paying for it or a deposit and they don't know you.

Yesornono · 30/12/2018 13:05

*A donation of money instead

This, with huge fucking bells on.

Tell your friend no. Maybe something like your insurance will no longer cover guests due to the numerous claims you have had to make thanks to guests trashing it.

HaudYerWheestHen · 30/12/2018 13:17

And give your in laws the heads up to the request!

halfwitpicker · 30/12/2018 13:20

Er, no.

SneakyGremlins · 30/12/2018 13:21

You'd probably end up with the Mexican House Thief coming to stay

UnicornSlaughters · 30/12/2018 13:23

Nope. Sorry we don't lend/rent it out anymore but here's a donation/can I buy some raffle tickets?

ScrumptiousBears · 30/12/2018 13:25

We have a holiday house by the coast and we don't let it out at all due to people taking the piss and not treating it well. I'd just tell them you don't let it.

Holidayshopping · 30/12/2018 13:26

I would tell BIL and SIL the situation but say you’re going to refuse-then everyone knows what’s going on.

OurChristmasMiracle · 30/12/2018 13:29

Upon discussion/ reflection we’ve decided we wouldn’t be comfortable with providing our holiday home for the auction.

Job done.

Juells · 30/12/2018 13:36

What an easy prize for your friend to offer. You'd have all the trouble of readying it, putting away your personal stuff, leaving it spick and span, then cleaning it afterwards, changing all the beds etc.. Pain in the arse.

MrsDannyRicc · 30/12/2018 13:38

I would speak to BIL/SIL and get to an agreement with them - and then you can say that you have spoken to the co-owners, and you have all agreed that, due to past issues, you can't offer the property.

That way everyone knows about it, and it's genuinely not just your decision - and if it gets back to BIL/SIL at least they know about it.

Tryingbutfailingmiserably · 30/12/2018 13:39

I would explain that due to previous abuse of the property by people who had been kindly allowed to use it you no longer make it available for holidays.

Tryingbutfailingmiserably · 30/12/2018 13:39

Lucky you to have a place in such a beautiful location though. Am envious Smile

cowfacemonkey · 30/12/2018 13:42

Just say no and that the house insurance isn’t valid for that type of thing.

Belenus · 30/12/2018 13:43

"We've stopped letting it out and our insurance no longer covers it as a letting property. Sorry. [Would you like x as a prize instead?]"

That covers it.

thebaronetofcockburn · 30/12/2018 13:46

Gah, all these excuses! 'No, sorry, it's a private property and we no longer have the insurance to let it out.'

And you don't have to offer another prize or money!

FFS, are people really this silly and wet?

cowfacemonkey · 30/12/2018 13:47

I think the insurance aspect is actually a valid one. This isn’t a commercially let property so I’m not sure how well you would be covered
