To hope this is the end of the book sleeve?

I hate book sleeves that come on hard backed books. I have to bin them. Received a hardback copy of a new book I wanted for Christmas with no sleeve - and no, it wasnt removed before gifting.

I dont get the point of them. The cover underneath could just have ghe title on it as this one does.

I hope this is the beginning of the end.

I agree although getting a book on the Kindle is the real eco friendly sensible choice. No trees needed

TheMoleInAHole · 29/12/2018 22:22

Personally I hate naked hardbacks.

Dahlietta · 29/12/2018 22:24

Naked hardbacks have existed for at least 20 years. Have you never seen one before?!

birdiewoof · 29/12/2018 22:26

I hate them too! Just bought myself Jodi Picoult’s new book and that is a naked hardback.

birdiewoof · 29/12/2018 22:27

Re: kindle books, does anyone else struggle to concentrate on them?! I definitely prefer to read a physical book. I buy many books from charity shops and then donate them back afterwards or pass them on to friends.

fourthusernamebutwhoscounting · 29/12/2018 22:29

But I use the book sleeve folded over bit, as a bookmark...

TulipsInbloom1 · 29/12/2018 22:31

Birdie thats what I got.

As well as protecting the book the jacket has more space for blurb and marketing stuff such as quotes and author biog - it’s very difficult, if not impossible, to produce fine or small type onto the cloth case (they make brass blocks to ‘print’ the type onto the cloth of the case).

And you’re limited to a very specific kind of design if there’s no jacket.

There’s a reason why the vast majority of hardbacks have jackets.

TulipsInbloom1 · 29/12/2018 22:32

I have a lot of books. Ive never had a naked hardback before.

I find a hardback hard to get comfy with

BeanTownNancy · 29/12/2018 22:33

getting a book on the Kindle is the real eco friendly sensible choice.

The only physical books I really get are signed by the author. 😍

RiverTam · 29/12/2018 22:34

Oh, I see what they’ve done with the Jodi Picoult, they’ve simply glued the jacket to the case. Interesting. I wonder if it will take off. I doubt it’s any cheaper to produce.

blackteasplease · 29/12/2018 22:37

I hate book sleeves too.

2019HereWeCome · 29/12/2018 22:38

birdie no you're not alone. I struggle to concentrate on e-books too. I lose my place too easily and find it hard to flick back & forth as I refer back to earlier events in the story. The light gives me a headache as well.

birdiewoof · 29/12/2018 22:40

@2019 yes, it’s a pain as in theory it’s such a great idea. I only tend to get books on the kindle if they are greatly reduced.

2019HereWeCome · 29/12/2018 22:42

getting a book on the Kindle is the real eco friendly sensible choice I suppose that depends on where you get your books from (e.g. borrowed and swapped books or those from 2nd hand bookshops are better than newly bought ones, even from the Kindle), how many books you read, how often you're likely to recharge your Kindle and whether you update/upgrade it when a new model comes out regardless of whether your old one is broken or not.

CoughLaughFart · 29/12/2018 22:44

Christ, why do you care?

ShouldHaveListenedInBiology · 29/12/2018 22:48

I get the point of them on hardback novels etc but WHY do they put them on kids hardback (Julia Donaldson etc) when the cover is exactly the same underneath? They are just asking to be ripped off by a younger sibling and then all hell breaks loose because it’s spoiled (or is that just my house?)

TheFrendo · 29/12/2018 22:49

Naked hardback does sound like a euphemism.

RiverTam · 29/12/2018 22:49

Because you can use the flaps for additional info/blurb/marketing spiel.

The jacket/cover are there to sell the book.

QueenOfTheCroneAge · 29/12/2018 22:52

Things have gone downhill since the Victorians stopped covering piano legs.

tillytrotter1 · 29/12/2018 23:04

Personally I like a dust cover, they seem to lend gravitas to a book, the main problem is preventing the edges getting torn and looking shabby, I loathe plastic sleeves, too much like school text books!

KeepServingTheFestiveSnogs · 29/12/2018 23:06

Things have gone downhill since they stopped using quills QueenOfTheCroneAge

What is this newfangled "book" they all speak of? Word of mouth worked well enough in my day!

mrsclausisdrunk · 30/12/2018 01:32

Ds (5) has a pathological hatred of book jackets. They've always enraged him. If he finds one he still shreds it and makes weird, angry squeaks.

lillighters85 · 30/12/2018 02:12

False argument totesemoshterri, trees planted specifically to produce paper (as opposed to deforestation) actually good for planet as sucks up CO2. Obvs cutting down Amazon v. Bad but thats not where paper comes from. Without need for paper, trees not planted in the first place.
