To not go to this NYE party?

Been invited to a party at my brother's and his gf's for NYE with some other family/friends. They had a night of vomiting on Wednesday night..... DH and I were also ill the same night with nausea and diarrhoea. DH was fine within 24hrs, I'm still not really eating much but feel ok otherwise. Our DC have avoided bit so far.

AIBU to not want to go to someone's house who was ill only 5 days ago? I've been so worried that the DC were going to catch what we had, I can't go through the waiting again!

5 days ago and well since? I would go.

CakeBeTheFoodOfLove · 29/12/2018 18:42

I mean, I've half killed myself bleaching our house from top to toe (emetophobe alert!) I would be so upset if we caught it from someone else's house!

Should be safe now, if you don’t want to go think of a different excuse. Otherwise, have fun:)

I would go if it were just me and DH, it's the kids I'm worried about.

Tough one probably ok but norovirus can live on surfaces for up to 14 days I think so with kids if young then I’d leave it too. Older kids who wouldn’t be putting things in their mouths and able to wash own hands then yes.

Drum2018 · 29/12/2018 18:46

Just politely decline and do your own thing. If you just saw them on Wednesday there's no need to feel bad about not seeing them for NYE.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/12/2018 18:47

If your kids haven't caught it by now they won't.

CakeBeTheFoodOfLove · 29/12/2018 18:47

The only thing is that the rest of our family will be there and I don't want to let them all down by not going because of something that may not be a problem. DC are 4 and 9.

I'm not sure it's the same bug as the one we had.

Drum2018 · 29/12/2018 18:48

Just to add my friend had a tummy bug last week (3 in house got it), thought she was over it 4 days later and went out for dinner and was back to square one that night. So you could just say you're still not feeling 100%.

CakeBeTheFoodOfLove · 29/12/2018 18:51

I'm still not great TBH - have just survived on crackers and toast since Wednesday and not much of those either!

My niece contracted noro 10 days after we disinfected the house top to bottom.

We reckon it was maybe the bunk bed post. Felt really guilty.

Anyway, the risk is that you can't be sure your brother has cleaned the house properly.

BendyLikeBeckham · 29/12/2018 18:55

@Awrite your niece could have got ill from 100 other sources outside of your home

Toxthing · 29/12/2018 18:59

Not every bug is norovirus. I don’t know why everyone who has a slight tummy bug says ‘I’ve had noro’ - seems to be a real mumsnet thing.

5 days afterwards? I’d go. Wouldn’t think twice about it.

UserName31456789 · 29/12/2018 19:11

I would go, they're probably in contact with more bugs just at the shops anyway you're just not aware of them.

CakeBeTheFoodOfLove · 29/12/2018 19:13

True but they aren't in the shops for a prolonged amount of time and wash hands as soon as they walk through the door.

Amanduh · 29/12/2018 19:16

That’s not a normal way to live..They come in to contact with bugs all day every day if they’re living normal childrens lives. It was 5 days ago.

Awrite · 29/12/2018 19:32

That's true @Beckham. Makes me feel a tad better.

And yes, it may not have been noro. It was very violent though.

CakeBeTheFoodOfLove · 29/12/2018 19:36

No Amanduh, worried about sickness bugs 24/7 isn't a normal way to live. I like to think the kids have 'normal' children's lives generally - they enjoyed playing witb muddy swamps and water pumps today anyway. I just don't want to knowingly cause them to catch something when I know the risk is there.

CripsSandwiches · 29/12/2018 20:40

You sound like you have a specific phobia about sickness bugs. After 5 days people will be back at school and work. Possibly preparing the food your DC eat in cafes, holding DC hands in the playground. You have to accept some level of risk - especially when it's something fairly minor anyway. In the unlikely event they catch it they'll be sick a day or two.

ForalltheSaints · 29/12/2018 20:46

Decline politely. I hope you can overcome your fears at some point soon.

CakeBeTheFoodOfLove · 29/12/2018 20:53

So do I - it's driving me insane! I've declined politely. We would only have stayed a couple of hours anyway - we would have been the only couple not drinking and with DC.
