AIBU to turn down a free holiday

We have the option to go on holiday for free to turkey.
I have a fear of aeroplanes which has been worse since LOs were born.
I’m also worried about tensions with Syria and the threat of terrorism.
Am I being wise or stupid?

I have a Turkish friend & even she advised me not to go..

MacarenaFerreiro · 29/12/2018 15:33

On our return they changed the terrorist threat in tourist areas to ‘highly likely’

You are aware that the current threat level in the UK is "severe" meaning an attack is "highly likely" and has been since September 2017?

Mercurial123 · 29/12/2018 16:53

I was in Istanbul six months ago there were no issues. As pp mentioned London along with other European countries have similar warnings.

AdultHumanFemale · 29/12/2018 17:03

You could always say that you don't want to contribute to the climate emergency by flying? (I'm about to start my own thread about this in a minute...).
Please seek help for your fear of flying though, not because I think you should fly more, but because it isn't great to have a phobia which limits how you live your life. My friend saw a hypnotherapist for help overcoming his fear of flying, and it was much easier to get over than he expected.

Jackshouse · 29/12/2018 17:04

MacarenaFerreiro yep but I don’t hang out in major cities.

CherryPavlova · 29/12/2018 17:12

I’d go. Life’s too, short to refuse opportunities because of what might be. The people who died in Manchester could never have imagined that was their last day. People live in Damascus, Paris, London, Tunisia, New York but all have been subject to several attacks. Most people are fine. Turkey is a big country.

After years of avoiding Turkey we finally went in 2017. We had a great time. I didn't like it as much as Egypt (our favourite destination) but it was close. Lots to do, lovely hotel, excellent beaches. Antalya airport was excellent, very safe, very security conscious (better in fact than B'Ham which allowed me to leave boarding and go back to the car park unchecked). I'm not a great flyer but decided long ago that I wouldn't let DD go without because of my fear - I've become an expert at pretending that I'm fine!

bridgetreilly · 29/12/2018 17:20

It's not a free holiday if it's stressful and scary. You don't have to do this if you don't want to, OP.

tablelegs · 29/12/2018 17:30

I went to Turkey years and years ago (marmaris) I wouldn't go back.

purpleelk · 29/12/2018 17:37

I love Turkey. Istanbul is one of my favourite cities in the world. But I warned everyone I knew that it was just a matter of time before something happened at Istanbul’s airport and to stay away. Sadly, I was proved right within a year.

I feel so terrible for the central and Eastern Europeans who are being lured into the empty resorts because the prices have dropped so much it’s now more affordable
than Bulgaria for them. It’s just a matter of time before the next horrific incident.

I really miss Turkey. Sad

Whatcouldpossiblygowrong · 29/12/2018 20:23

Yep this post pretty much summed up all my pros and cons on the list!! Now in total decision making paralysis!

We are going to Turkey in August - me, DH, 5 year old DS, Mum and step dad. I’m not worried at all about terrorist activities. We’re staying in the Fetihye area. First week in a hotel (need to book) and the second in a villa in a smallish resort. It’s 600 miles from the Syrian border.

I live in Manchester and know people who were at the Ariana concert. I work in Manchester City centre three days a week, travelling through Piccadilly station, and we go to manchester sometimes for meals out/the theatre. I occasionally go shopping to the Trafford Centre

People live and work in London every day

I personally feel more at risk of a terrorist attack in our UK cities than we are in quiet resorts and on the beaches in Turkey

Yearofthemum · 30/12/2018 17:06

I wouldn't because of the state of emergency.

MakeAHouseAHome · 30/12/2018 17:20

Wise. I went to Turkey every year for about 6 years. Knew the locals, had great friends there. You couldn't pay me to go back and even they say I am wise not to.

PippaParty · 30/12/2018 17:34

Hypnotherapy for fear of flying is amazing. Completely solved my issue.
