Infections are not caused by lack of socks!?

MIL staying with us for the holidays and DS1 has developed a chest infection (he is 4).

Dr diagnosed him and put him on antibiotics.

MIL is adamant this is because DS1 walks around with no socks on.

My understanding is bacteria don't really care if you have socks on or not?!

The house is warm and he doesn't want socks on...

Aibu to leave him without his socks?

YANBU

You also can't catch a cold from forgetting your scarf

formerbabe · 29/12/2018 12:32

Oh gosh, this sort of thing drives me nuts. Yanbu

Foslady · 29/12/2018 12:32

NO SOCKS!!!!!

Your poor child is at risk from scurvy, poor sleep, woodworm and Dutch Elm Dicease - socks on immediately!!!!! GrinGrinGrin

SnuggyBuggy · 29/12/2018 12:32

My nan used to say the same thing when I was little.

gruffalomom · 29/12/2018 12:33

Thank you!

What! you terrible mother. I'm sure the kidney infection won't be far behind

gruffalomom · 29/12/2018 12:34

Haha Foslady! Just think what I'm doing to them when I give in to their requests to take off their gloves Shock

Fatted · 29/12/2018 12:34

Fungal toe infection perhaps. Chest infection I highly doubt.

Notmorewashing · 29/12/2018 12:35

My mother in law is the same !!!!! Accuses me of giving the kids colds because their rooms are too cold because I refuse to have the heating on at night !!!! Yet they are in Long sleeve pj and thermal vests and lots of covers.
Also get accused if I don’t put slippers on!!!

My grandma always said we’d get ‘chincough’ from sitting on the stone doorstep. I later found out that chincough is whooping cough - which I apparently had as a baby having never sat on a cold surface.

Who knew socks could prevent chest infections? The NHS is missing a trick here.... I hope your son feels much better soon OP.

AnotherPidgey · 29/12/2018 12:36

Possibly verrucas or athletes foot if you didn't change the socks. Not chest infections though Grin

DS isn't a great sock lover. Does not do trousers. Very hardy constitution. Wink

gruffalomom · 29/12/2018 12:37

Thanks everyone! I knew this was buts but she is so adamanent I started to doubt actual science Confused

Isn't it chillblains from cold steps?! and I do remember being told I'd get kidney infections from not zipping up my coat

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 29/12/2018 12:37

I feel your pain, OP.

My in-laws will literally apply butter to a bump on a toddler’s head as a “cure” and it irrationally enrages me because it makes no sodding sense.

maras2 · 29/12/2018 12:37

And ................
You get diarrhoea through a hole in your vest ...............
It's true.
Everyone knows Xmas Grin

Cheerbear23 · 29/12/2018 12:39

My grandma used to say you’ll get a chill in your kidneys from sitting on a cold surface or not wearing a vest. She firmly believed kidneys needed to be covered by a vest at all times! Her sister believed washing your hair too muchi.e. more than once a week, would cause colds.

arranbubonicplague · 29/12/2018 12:40

sitting on cold concrete would cause your kidneys to pack up and shrivel

We didn't have bathrooms in my student accommodation and the unions had baths/showers that you could book. Every single time the staff saw me come out without drying my hair (I never did) they told me that I would develop meningitis.

Laiste · 29/12/2018 12:41

Hmm. The one and only time i got so very cold that it took me hours to warm my body up properly i promptly came down with tonsillitis. And i'm very very rarely ill at all.

I think there's something in the theory that getting very cold weakens you and puts you at a disadvantage to fighting infections. I think that's where this stuff comes from. A misunderstanding of illness and fear of it. Not wearing socks and sitting on the ground however - nahh. YANBU Grin

Gettingbackonmyfeet · 29/12/2018 12:41

For God's sake don't you know it's the first thing the NHS prescribes ?

Chest Infection : Socks and hat (if it's a baby) stat.....

Kidney infection: Vest and gloves stat ....

Broken leg :Vicks vaporub and slightly tepid water stat .....

GrinGrin

Sorry OP can you tell I have a mother like your MIL

I once actually sent a breakdown by email if how bacteria worked...made no difference "I know what I know gettingback, Doctors can be wrong " Hmm

SeaViewBliss · 29/12/2018 12:41

maras2 don’t you get diarrhoea through a hole in your arse??!!

(I’ll get my coat)

mirren3 · 29/12/2018 12:42

Do you not get diarrhea through a hole in your pants?!?!?!

Grimbles · 29/12/2018 12:42

I thought it was piles from sitting on cold concrete, walls, etc.

willdoitinaminute · 29/12/2018 12:43

My MiL was convinced that DH didn’t have epilepsy. His seizures were, apparently, due to me not giving him enough to drink. I came very close to asking the Neurologist to write to her to put her straight.

Laiste · 29/12/2018 12:43

My paternal Nan (who would have been over 100 if she were still alive) was horrified that my mum 'let me' wash my hair while i was on my period, and talked in hushed tones about it to her. I have no idea what the actual theory behind that was Confused
