DD has lost her keys, again.....

DD was out last night and lost her house keys (they fell through a hole in her new bag). She was out locally, in a pub and then club. There was no ID with the keys, so I don't think it's necessary to change the locks. I did that before when s.he lost her bag with keys and ID together. Cost me over €100! What would you do in this situation?

Will be checking said bag for signs of hole when she gets back. She stayed at her friend's last night...

We have a keyless door, ideal for key loosers.

Comenext · 29/12/2018 09:22

It could be at her friend's house?
Insist on speaking to that friend yourself and ask her/him to check around the bedroom and livingroom.

LostInShoebiz · 29/12/2018 09:25

If the hole is genuine then the key could be in the lining, safe and sound.

HildegardCrowe · 29/12/2018 09:31

Think hole might be genuine - cheap piece of fabric tat from Misguided!

We had had our key lock changed to a Yale Doorman - code lock door. Never locked out again, and it works great for both our kids, as the door locks as soon as they close the door.

FixTheBone · 29/12/2018 09:37

GO for a smart-lock - its the way forward. You can set them to be used with a PIN, a keyfob, smartphone or fingerprint.

We've got 7 children and a MIL who is around daily, as well as several other family members who visit regularly.

You can add and remove people at will, allow amazon to drop things off in the porch, it's brill.

LostInShoebiz · 29/12/2018 09:40

Do the smart locks have some kind of failover in the event of a power cut? I can see that being a good thing for our back door (not front though as it’s a period house and we need old-looking door furniture).

heyhegs · 29/12/2018 09:46

Our smartlock has a pincode, it is a yale doorman, they run by longlife batteries, and will let you know well in advance if batteries are running out. They are the way forward as mentioned above, very safe and trustable.

StillMedusa · 29/12/2018 09:50

Keysafe here...have had it for years . I might look into a smart lock though.
I'd also be looking for the hole in her bag... call me suspciious but that sounds like an excuse Grin and she can pay for new keys and key safe!
We have 6 adults in our house currently and none of us carry a key, it's much easier!

purplecorkheart · 29/12/2018 09:51

Have you checked her room/around house/in other bag? She may not have taken them with her if the door locks when you close it.

Wanderlusting99 · 29/12/2018 09:56

We have a key safe, good for when you discover the keys are in your other coat pocket or the cleaner needs to get in etc.

dahliaaa · 29/12/2018 10:02

Those of you with the key safes - which make do you have ? My parents are looking for one but quite cautious.

arranbubonicplague · 29/12/2018 10:07

Any particular recommendations for a Keysafe, please?

NDNs are lovely - however, sometimes up to 4 times a week, one or other of them is locked out and I'd like something to suggest to them (if one of us isn't in then they can be stranded for hours).

PumpkinKitty82 · 29/12/2018 10:11

My ds18 has done this 3 bloody times so last time he paid for the replacements of the house key and garage key and bike lock key!
Thankfully hasn’t done it since but still some time before he goes back to uni.
Did add a sort of Bluetooth alarm to them so if he steps away a certain distance then his phone will go off but was a cheap one so abit temperamental

magoria · 29/12/2018 10:11

We have a little masterlock key safe tucked away in our carport.

We got it so the cleaner we had could let herself in and we didn't need to carry keys around when cycling.

DS now uses it everyday rather than taking his key to college.

Easy to change the code when cleaner left.

PumpkinKitty82 · 29/12/2018 10:12

Should add we now have a keysafe with a combination lock and was one with good reviews from Amazon

Buy her a tile for her keys

www.thetileapp.com/en-gb/store/tiles/mate

tittietinsel · 29/12/2018 10:53

A tile only works if you are close to your keys though? Not much use of you lose them when out, unless you notice immediately of course

twoshedsjackson · 29/12/2018 11:09

When I lost my front door keys (keyring gave way) I knew they had to be somewhere around the local parade of shops. but no luck retracing my steps. No identification on them, so my head said it wasn't a problem, but my heart said otherwise, and I had the locks changed. I didn't realise there was an issue with house insurance, so feel a bit less "over the top" now.
My friend's daughter was maddeningly casual about this until she was stranded for two hours (friend was out and about with me at the time!) and then had the locksmith's bill settled by instalments from her allowance!

JuniperBeer · 29/12/2018 11:18

Tile location is updated by crowd location too. Not sure of the proper name. I love mine!

CallMeSirShotsFired · 29/12/2018 11:21

Timely reminder to not have your car keys and house keys on the same ring for this very reason!

(And related, not have any in car sat navs with your exact home location programmed in)

tittietinsel · 29/12/2018 11:26

juniper

I never knew!

Currently working out which tiles I need for me and DD Grin

Oldraver · 29/12/2018 11:28

When I used to go clubbing I would have a lanyard or kilt pin attatched inside my bag for important stuff like my phone and keys, as when you rummaging around in the dark I can imagine it could be easy to loose them

HildegardCrowe · 29/12/2018 12:52

Have just picked DD up from mate's house, VERY hungover but that's a separate issue. Her new bag does indeed have a hole in it and the zip's broken too so will be returned. She's paying me for the new set of keys. Thanks for all the replies, at least when she's back ar uni I don't have to know what's going on....
