Fake Calpol recipe...

My 2 year old DS has been poorly for the last couple of days - temp, cough etc. He's been having regular Calpol, he loves Calpol.

Had his last dose 2 hours ago as his temp was up again, now in bed screaming for 'Caaaaalllllpolllll'. I've tried cuddles, books, water, more cuddles.

Am I crazy to be thinking about mocking up something and pretending it's 'Calpol' - and what would one use for such a thing? Hmm

half calpol, half something sweet?

Kikipost · 28/12/2018 20:13

If he’s not particularly poorly and just really enjoying the taste, then don’t indulge. It’s medicene after all.

He will forget about it but setting yourself up for this debate every he’s I’ll!

I’ve used yoghurt before in the syringe when the slightly older sibling was having a jealous tantrum because the sick baby getting regular medicine. Not my finest parenting moment but i was sleep-deprived and exhausted from being ill myself so I did what it took and it kept the peace. It definitely wouldn’t have looked or tasted like Calpol though. If you genuinely think satisfying this particular demand will be enough to tip him over to sleep, maybe dip the very tip of your placebo syringe into real calpol so he gets that taste first on his tastebuds?

Best wishes.

I drew up jam or jelly to give dc a placebo between doses of the real thing.

bobstersmum · 28/12/2018 20:15

The little druggy!

DappledThings · 28/12/2018 20:18

SovietKitsch maybe I should write to them and suggest it. I'd happily pay the same price for it, or even slightly more.

Love your username btw.

'No! Just saaay 'no!'

strawberry jam watered down in an egg cup and put in a syringe?

MissRhubarb · 28/12/2018 20:23

My DD has a multi-vitamin which is in the form of a syrup. I call it her vitamin, but could just as easily be presented as "special cold medicine".

Ploverlover · 28/12/2018 20:25

Cough syrup is sugar water.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 28/12/2018 20:26

With an older child I have used a tictac as a placebo before now. Grin

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 28/12/2018 20:28

SovietKitsch they already do - glycerine cough syrup. It's just a sweet syrup really. Quite cheap too. You can get blackcurrant flavour.

FOTTOSOFTFOSM · 28/12/2018 20:29

I used to give mine strawberry sauce. We put some in an old calpol bottle and let them watch us syringe it out Grin

emdude · 28/12/2018 20:30

@MissRhubarb you're a genius! Gave him a spoon of his multi vitamin syrup, he lapped it up and has settled down! Thank you!!

Excellent!!

Calm and full of vitimins!

I wonder if melted jam would work in future?

Missingstreetlife · 28/12/2018 20:32

I think you should explain that calpol is medicine and he's due more at a certain time (as his temperature still seems unstable). It's not a treat but treats are available. Why would you encourage him to scream for it?

Missingstreetlife · 28/12/2018 20:34

Probably any hit of sugar will make him feel brighter in the short term

onemorego2019 · 28/12/2018 20:41

😂 glad you're sorted now. Was going to suggest vitamin too. I call it 'special' medicine 😈

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 28/12/2018 20:54

I was relieved to see two voices on this thread saying that they wouldn’t do this. I have always gone down the medicine is medicine approach. There are some things that are non negotiable alike holding hands crossing the road and only having medicine when you need it. Cal poly don’t sell a placebo because it’s a bloody daft idea to be encouraging medicine use when it’s not needed.

redsummershoes · 28/12/2018 20:59

at silly o'clock with a whiney and ill toddler anything goes imo

MissRhubarb · 28/12/2018 20:59

You're welcome. Glad he's settled Smile.

Mumofaprinny · 28/12/2018 22:28

The sweet with the strawberry filling in the milk tray boxes!!!! Yummm....

DogMamma · 28/12/2018 22:32

Sorry it related.... but @Merryoldgoat I give ibuprofen and paracetamol alternately every 3 hours which helps keep them feeling reasonable

can you not take paracetamol and ibuprofen together I've been doing this for two days taking both tabs every 4 hours to help with bad cold symptoms!?!
