Oxford parking

I am taking my two kids to oxford museum of natural history tomorrow to meet friends. Should I use the park and ride? Or is there somewhere better to park near the museum? I have been researching and I few like the park and ride bus might leave us quite far away from the museum and I have a 4 year old who won't want to walk that far.

I imagine it will be crazy traffic tomorrow in oxford. I'm not familiar with the area.

Can anyone help?

Oxford parking is difficult and expensive, I’d use park and ride.

bluesky · 28/12/2018 19:34

Definitely head for one of the Park & Rides, really easy

BaeBae · 28/12/2018 19:38

There is parking close to The Ashmolean. There’s an underground car park in Gloucester Green, another car park in The Westgate Centre (not far by foot once you’ve parked) and Oxpens Car Park If all these are busy. Try Gloucester Green first. No need to Park n Ride - if you get in before midday you’ll find a space no problem and after you still will but may be a bit busier.

cantbeb0thered · 28/12/2018 19:38

Do you know how far the park and ride stop is from the museum?

BaeBae · 28/12/2018 19:39

I live in Oxford & use these car parks regularly 😊

BaeBae · 28/12/2018 19:40

Pear tree Park and ride is about a 15-20 min bus ride away... that’s the closest.

blackteasplease · 28/12/2018 19:41

Park and ride really isn't difficult though. I wouldn't see it as a problem

BaeBae · 28/12/2018 19:43

Thornhill park and ride probably better if you’re coming in from the south, Pear Tree from the North.

BaeBae · 28/12/2018 19:44

Car parks in Oxford about £7.50-£9.00 for 3 hours ...

Coffeist · 28/12/2018 19:46

City of Oxford College has private parking lot- believe it's £5 full day.

AprilShowers16 · 28/12/2018 19:47

I think you can park at the city of oxford college for £5 for the whole day at weekends. I haven’t done it for a year but according to their website it still looks like you can

bridgetreilly · 28/12/2018 19:47

The Park and Ride stops will be nearer to the museum than the car parks BaeBae has mentioned. You want the 300 Redbridge/Pear Tree or the 500 Oxford Parkway.

bridgetreilly · 28/12/2018 19:50

Definitely don't park at the City of Oxford college - that's miles from the museum. Buses really will take you closer than you can park, OP.

ForalltheSaints · 28/12/2018 19:55

Use the Park and Ride.

BaeBae · 28/12/2018 20:00

Gloucester Green car park is a 2 min walk from The Ashmolean

SassitudeandSparkle · 28/12/2018 20:01

I'd also recommend the park and ride facility, we used the Peartree one last time and got the bus in to the centre (not tried the museum yet).

BaeBae · 28/12/2018 20:02

Ah! My bad you are talking about the Natural History museum! St Giles parking is closest but gets very busy. Park and Ride would be your best bet, yes.

RhiWrites · 28/12/2018 20:03

They’re not going to the Ashmo, @baebae although your suggestions are all good. They’re going to the Museum go Natural History, the one that leads into the Pitt Rivers.

plinkyplonkyploo · 28/12/2018 20:03

You could also park at Diamond place in summertown and then get the bus which will drop you 2 mins walk away from the museum

autumnkate · 28/12/2018 20:04

Fab museum. Check out the shrunken heads next door

ILiveNearThere · 28/12/2018 20:08

Street parking in Oxford is eye-wateringly expensive and time-limited.

Car parks ditto.

Buses regular and stop centrally, not a long walk from where you're going.

Natural History museum is fab. Have a good time. I was in Browns for lunch today, which is also close by and yummy. With what you save on parking...

DontCallMeBaby · 28/12/2018 20:10

Read the park and ride instructions properly though, my local park and ride you only pay for the bus. Oxford you pay for bus AND parking. Or bus AND parking fine if you’re me 😩

cantbeb0thered · 28/12/2018 20:21

Thanks everyone. I think we will park and ride then. We are comin from the south.

SchrodingersUnicorn · 28/12/2018 20:25

Don't go park and ride unless you are doing a full day (costs a fortune as you have to pay for parking and the bus!) City centre car parks are extortionate (we had to pay £15 for 3-4 hours last time!)
We live outside Oxford but go in lots, as pp said, the best option is City of Oxford College, £5 parking for the whole day at weekends. Bargain. We do it every single Sunday. It's on Oxpens Road, take £5 cash to hand to parking attendant.

bridgetreilly · 28/12/2018 20:27

Yes, but Oxpens Road is miles from Parks Road and the OP has a 4yo who doesn't want to walk far.
