SW is just a weird fucking cult

I've literally had enough of people talking about Slimming World (or Slimmers' World shudder).

It's bullshit.

It has the odd decent recipe but generally advocates for really unhealthy food habits and weird restrictions and replacements.

My main issues with it are -

Emphasis on classifying foods as 'free' or 'speed' and don't even get me STARTED on syns.

It makes members act like fucking zombies who talk in halfspeak jargon. HexBEasySp what the actual fucking fuck?

To make anything you need to use FryLight which is a heinous invention. Rapeseed or olive oil spray is 2 cal per spray and is an actual raw ingredient, not some industrial airport lubricant with added flavourings.

The amount of shit you're encouraged to add to your diet. Diet fanta and coke are staple ingredients in loads of main meals which are touted as family friendly, as are spends and other sweeteners.

It is a fucking RIP OFF. £20+ to join, £5 per week and fines if you miss a sesh. I went to a meeting twice a few years back and the group leader still adds me in group chats when attendance gets low cos he's clearly missing the $$$ now that nobody is buying his fucking HiFi bars.

I just don't see that this works. I don't know anyone who has consistently kept weight off with it - most people tend to become either yo yo dieters or shadow ED sufferers.

Why is this still a popular industry that people keep funding even though we logically know it doesn't work?

Do you think the ultra fanatical SW followers see through the product placements?

Darkestnight · 28/12/2018 16:59

I lost a lot of weight on sw but its all wrong as the education is never about calories. Only today they sent me a leaflet saying come back we can do this together. Well they can't as I've been through 24 months of education and psychology from the NHS and had a gastric sleeve and now 9 stone down.
I'm probably more qualified then there consultants.

Mumtoboy123 · 28/12/2018 17:00

The worst was when they tried to make me carry on during pregnancy. Went off it after that. Pay a fiver to be told i aas putting on weight (obviously) and shouldnt be eating the cravings i was having. No thanks

Melanippe · 28/12/2018 17:00

I've found it really helpful and my consultant is really good at emotional support, which is great for me because I overeat emotionally. I can see that it wouldn't be for everyone, and the last group I was part of the consultant was frankly, shite, but I've lost just over a stone in 6 weeks and I feel much better.

I probably am paying money for someone to hold my hand while I change what I know needs to be changed, but right now, I need that hand hold.

What really helps is people being snarky on the internet about it. While also suggesting that those who go are stupid and in a cult.

Jengnr · 28/12/2018 17:01

@CaptainMarvelDanvers

I don’t see why not. I enjoy it, I want to stay on track and it’s a sustainable plan. Plus, once you’re in target you don’t have to pay so it’s a no brainer for me. It’s like anything, if you follow it it works innit? :)

MozzchopsThirty · 28/12/2018 17:05

I too find it bonkers, I was working in a big office of women all at it counting syns, sharing weird recipes and looking at that wanky 'pinch of nom' Facebook page (just typing that gives me the rage)

I almost tried it last year and my personal trainer was horrified, I know how to eat and he said 'you think Anthony Joshua looks like that by doing fucking slimming world'

And I thought yeah you have a point
Plus the consultant I spoke to advised against too much exercise and I thought that was just odd

GodrestyemerrySchadenfreud · 28/12/2018 17:10

The clapping while all sat in a horseshoe because Brenda lost 1/2 a lb despite her daughters wedding, then the “Doris, what went wrong? Are you disappointed that you gained 7lbs this week... was it because you ARE NOT EATING ENOUGH!!!!” WTF?

THIS was the bit that got me! The naming, the shaming - you've been to a family wedding and had a sliver of cake and gained half an ounce and it's as though you'd kicked a kitten to death on your patio.

(Also - the woman who was leading was the size of a small hippopotamus and apparently oblivious of the fact - it was like an episode of "Little Britain")

The cheering and jeering finished it for me. I left.

As it happens, I lost two stones AFTER I left, and over the pas 4 years put one of them back on. But Frankly, my Dear - I don't give a damn!

I am healthy. I regularly (5 x week0 walk briskly for about 4 hours (the other 2 days are "easy walks" of an hour or so).

You want to lose weight? Get a dog. TAKE IT FOR WALKS. Enjoy its company.

Stuff Slimming World, Up Yours, Weight-Watchers - Pups for Pounds is the way to go! Grin

posthistoricmonsters · 28/12/2018 17:11

My partner lost eight stone on SW.

I joined this summer but my heart wasn't in it, I'm always unwell during summers at hot as this one was.

I've discovered that they change what's free or synned or synned by how much, all the time.

The second week I went, I put on 1.5lb. The sudden hush in the room when they told me...... The look on the weighers faces...... I've not been back since.

Turns out the reason it worked for my OH is he basically ate meat. Lots of steak, chicken, etc. That's not flipping SW, that's Atkins 😂

Jayfee · 28/12/2018 17:11

Yes...we have 2obsessed friends

Schmoobarb · 28/12/2018 17:15

Periodically I keep trying to go but the leader here is as thick as mince and doesn’t seem to have a clue about the plan either.

Some of the food people make is truly revolting especially where it involves quark and quiches made out of pasta n sauce.

GodrestyemerrySchadenfreud · 28/12/2018 17:17

chubby cubs do SW friendly meals but it's proper food. They are the right level of cynical about it. They are very sweary and without sounding bitchy they aren't tiny (although I've no idea how large they were to begin with). No frylight in sight and v. V. Limited use of diet drinks or campfire stew!

Sounds like my kinda people!

kazillionaire · 28/12/2018 17:17

My friend has spent hundreds if not a couple of thousand on the cambridge diet and yes she has lost 18lbs but she has been on it for six months! Cant wait until she actually eats properly again and realises that the loss is not sustainable when you eat actual food

Alwaysonholiday · 28/12/2018 17:18

I'm lactose intolerant. SW don't cater for us, or even seem to know what it is.

clowdyweewee · 28/12/2018 17:21

I think what puts me off more than anything is that the Consultants are usually fatter than me.

(Someone will be along in a minute to accuse me of being judgemental.)

BoswellsBollocks · 28/12/2018 17:21

I have a perpetually overweight friend or dips in and out of slimming world but still thinks it’ll work if she uses their recipes occasionally.

Then she has a ‘cheat day’ every week, eating everything she’s missed all week so can easily eat 2000 cals extra as treats that day.

Then she wonders why she’s not losing weight.

ballsdeep · 28/12/2018 17:22

The best is when you have to. Clap people to congratulate them. For. Putting on weight.

Oooooo well done Kathleen! Only three pounds on this week. That is good considering the four take aways and five bottles of wine. Maybe if you'd had a poo before stepping onto the scales there would be a difference.

I kid you not.

UserMe18 · 28/12/2018 17:23

@MozzchopsThirty my consultant tried to tell me exercise doesn't help you lose weight, only diet does, but exercise gives "other health benefits" apparently 🙄

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 28/12/2018 17:24

You can find pages of the booklet on google images so literally no reason to pay.
I think only the lifers really bark on about sums and heb and Diet Coke to everyone. Lifers being those who have been on the diet for years and lose gain etc.
Many people follow the healthy plan lots of fruit and veg and minimal treats. There are also Facebook groups for free which share recepie ideas and always Pinterest.
The group is the rip off.

birdiewoof · 28/12/2018 17:28

I agree. But am at a loss as to how I can lose the weight I need to lose (6 stone 😞). The only time I lost it I did WW and was addicted to the gym. It wasn’t sustainable so I piled it all back on. Not sure how I can sort myself out...anyone any ideas?

GabsAlot · 28/12/2018 17:30

my dsis is stiwll with sw after hitting her target shes made some lovely friends but the main thing was doing more exercise-you can only lose so much you got to move around aswell

anyway shes cooked some nice meals still mainly sticks with it but everything in moderation still treats herself

Knowivedonewrong · 28/12/2018 17:30

Oooh! I've found my people!
Fucking SW, WW, RC can all jog on!
My friend has been doing SW for about 3 years. She's lost about 2 stone and kept it off. So if it works for you then I don't see a problem..

I saw a documentary a few years ago about slimming clubs and the president of WW admitted that they made their money from the people losing then gaining the weight back and jumping back onto the WW bandwagon.

mrscee · 28/12/2018 17:31

I agree also eating mullers lights which are full of sweeteners instead of fruit and natural yogurt makes no sense

kateandme · 28/12/2018 17:31

i hate it too.thankyou for this thread.ive been bashed by my cousin who swore by it.but she then got in trouble and yep...had to go back for more "support" BUT THATS THE WHOLE POINT.they work so you theirs.then you leave and what the hay you put on weight.suprise surprise.then you go back for "a bit more help" and then you leave and etc etc e-fucking-tc. Its a total sham and as soon as soon as you start those behaviours your lost.
I saw a study on it where it showed over 95%failure in five years.but people don't think or look to that when they are desperate they just see the quick gains.
but its not sustainable no diet is.
we need to be teaching health wellness both body and mind.and movement.
those shitty meeting and groups work on shame.

MepsiPax · 28/12/2018 17:33

I've encountered a couple of people who were dieting using the SW method. I have to admit they seemed like they were under the influence of a cult! Put me right off.

mrscee · 28/12/2018 17:34

I remember one week everyone in the class had major weight loss. I somehow lost 6 pounds and other people lost loads too. I weighed myself on my scales at home and I'd not lost that much. I think the consultant had fiddled with the scales because the next week everyone put weight on.
