Why do people still give gift vouchers?

HMV are about to appoint administrators so anyone with their gift vouchers will lose their mobey.

Others will follow and the ones that can be spent at any shop aren't safe either they are only valid for as long as the issuer is in business.

Go and spend them today.

I always ask for Amazon vouchers as I can buy the books I want as soon as they are released rather than waiting until my budget allows. My df gives me cash which gets frittered here and there on general household things when I need cash for something or someone, last year I used it to buy a voucher so I could spend it on myself and this year if I don't see a coat I want, I'll do the same again.
I buy my Dniece a book voucher (plus stocking fillers) as she loves to read but unless she tells me a specific title or author I don't really know her taste that well. As I have been the recipient of really shit books, as people mistakenly think I will read anything, I prefer to let DN choose for herself.

Again like others have said I prefer getting vouchers. I had John Lewis ones this Christmas as if I get money it just ends up being spent on bills/food shopping etc.....
I love Dior mascara. I would never spend £27 on a mascara in cash but with a gift voucher I can! Smile

I like receiving gift vouchers as if I'm given cash, it just gets used on day to day stuff like food shopping or petrol. At least with a gift card, I am more likely to buy something nice for myself - but I agree the giver needs to choose which shop they get vouchers for carefully!

Cash is a universal gift voucher that can be spent at any shop. I have no idea why people persist in buying gift cards that tie you to a particular shop.

My DC have been given gift vouchers by my sister since they were about 12 and getting difficult to buy for. Now in their 20s they still get them.
We live miles from shops and so a day trip was often required.
I just give them the cash and try to use the vouchers if I can.
This year they got ASOS vouchers. They have zero interest in clothes so I now have £40 of ASOS vouchers. Which I am highly unlikely to spend.
I always make a point of giving cash to sister's DC.

Nothisispatrick · 28/12/2018 19:39

I would happily have any ASOS vouchers people won’t spend 😂😂 I am 12 weeks post partum and nothing fits me.

Hopefully HMV will be saved. For all of you saying "gosh I thought it closed years ago and who buys cds anymore" should actually get off amazon and actually walk into a branch of HMV once in a while and see they sell way more than cds and dvds. They sell tshirts, gadgets like head phones and speakers and record players, collectables like Pop Vinyl figures, key rings, badges, plushies etc. They sell books, posters, pokemon cards, bags, hats, Lego minifigs. They even have novelty door mats. Basically all those threads we have just had about "what can I get a teenager/20 something for Christmas?" -well quite a lot of what HMV sells would be what that age group is in to. I hope HMV is saved.

@LakieLady

That's terrible at Debenhams. Is that recent?

Last year I used vouchers to buy perfume there.

whatsthepointthen · 28/12/2018 19:57

SimplyPut · 28/12/2018 19:58

Apparently you can trade in HofF vouchers.
