Please settle this argument!

MissWilmottsGhost · 27/12/2018 21:12

A tree is made of wood, as I am made of meat.

It may not be correct in detail but surely you need to let it go?

I'm a biologist btw. If this sort of thing upsets you then do not become a biologist WinkGrin

GodrestyemerrySchadenfreud · 27/12/2018 21:15

Does that mean . . . that I'm made form . . . MEAT?!?!?!?!?!

SantasBassoon · 27/12/2018 21:16

Trees are wood, in the main part.

I'm saying carbon Dioxide etc
This sounds like the makings of one of my DH's boring and pointless arguments when he'll try to make me roll my eyes so hard they won't come back down, and then I'll have to give up on the argument while I wait to regain my sight.

biscuitmillionaire · 27/12/2018 21:18

A tree is not 'made of' anything, because it hasn't been 'made' (I don't believe in that kind of god), it has evolved over millennia, or grown. Trees consist of roots, trunk, branches, leaves and possibly flowers and seeds. Wood comes from tree trunks and branches.

AGHHHH · 27/12/2018 21:19

Made of just means consists of though doesn't it? We don't mean something has bee made by a higher being when we say that.

donquixotedelamancha · 27/12/2018 21:23

Not made FROM made OF! I'm saying carbon Dioxide etc...

Surely they are made of wood, which is made from sugar, which made from air and water.

The CO2 is a couple of steps back from what the tree is now made of.

Unescorted · 27/12/2018 21:27

Wood is made of trees. Just as pork is made of pig or flour is made of sheet. They are all a processed/ harvested version of a living thing.

Unescorted · 27/12/2018 21:28

Sheet =wheat in autocorrect world

BertieBotts · 27/12/2018 21:29

I think she's saying they aren't made, they grow.

I think it is correct to say they are made of wood in the same way humans are made of flesh. It's more made up of, it doesn't mean someone literally assembled the things.

SasBel · 27/12/2018 21:31

Think you are looking for the word lignin.....

Thewifipasswordis · 27/12/2018 21:31

If a wood falls in the tree does the woodchuck hear it? 🤔

donquixotedelamancha · 27/12/2018 21:33

I think she's saying they aren't made, they grow.

But surely we would reasonably say the air is made of oxygen, nitrogen etc- even though it isn't produced? I think 'made of' is a pretty reasonable phrase in this case.

LadyLance · 27/12/2018 21:34

Trees are made of molecules involving carbon, but they aren't actually made of carbon dioxide- the mass comes from carbon dioxide which is processed during photosynthesis, but it's not in the form of CO2 anymore.

Wood is made from cellulose (C6H10O5) lignin (C9H10O2) and different hemicelluloses.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 27/12/2018 21:34

“My Christmas tree is made of plastic but it identifies as a tree”

That made me laugh!! Grin

Tulipvase · 27/12/2018 21:36

But does a tree only become wood once it has been felled?

RB68 · 27/12/2018 21:38

so if a vegetarian bleeds from a finger do they lick it....

SantasBassoon · 27/12/2018 21:41
