Sneaking this out at Christmas. Is this what people thought would happen?

What on earth did you want to happen? Confused

StoneofDestiny · 27/12/2018 19:19

Yes of course, why not?
(were you also expecting all the Brits who have settled in France, Spain etc to be herded back to the UK?)

HappyPunky · 27/12/2018 19:21

Some public sector workers have done it already. We need them.

OddBoots · 27/12/2018 19:23

It's £65, I think that is a one off payment though.

Lazypuppy · 27/12/2018 19:25

Of course, like visas in other countries

ragged · 27/12/2018 19:29

workmate was in the pilot scheme for this. I thought we all knew this was coming at least 1 yr ago?

OddBoots · 27/12/2018 19:29

It is like a visa in other countries but it still feels a bit odd because it looks like it will also be needed by people who have lived and worked here since childhood including people in their 60s and possibly older (the oldest people I know to need one will be in their 60s and have been here since before they started school). It feels like it ought to be free for them.

LeggyLinda · 27/12/2018 19:33

“Sneaking”? This has been common for months. Public sector workers have been completing their right to stay for ages.
And yes, this is what most people thought/hoped would happen

OftenHangry · 27/12/2018 19:44

There was no sneak. If someone didn't know about settled status and the need to apply soon (or already if in pilot scheme) they must have been living under a rock... Or be intentionally ignoring it.

SilverySurfer · 27/12/2018 19:46

Yep and no sneaking involved - sorry to disappoint you Hmm

londonrach · 27/12/2018 19:47

I thought everyone knew this. You been under a rock or something op. Op you also need to pay for a visa to go to europe. Think £6 for three years was mentioned. Compared to the fact we might default to eu its a bargain. Warning...daily mail link coming up. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6532565/Europeans-pay-billions-EU-budget-no-deal-Brexit.html

Kpo58 · 27/12/2018 19:58

I didn't know that anyone would have to apply for the right to use Etsy. Confused

pointythings · 27/12/2018 20:07

This has been known for a long time now. The only reason I haven't taken part in the pilot is that it doesn't allow for me to apply for my DDs at the same time, so I'm waiting. (It's also apparently very buggy and needs a lot of work before a full rollout has any chance of success, so like all government IT programmes it's going to be a lot of fun).

I think it's fair enough, though setting the cut-off for child/adult at 16 feels like cheekyfuckery and profiteering to me - should be 18.

avenueq · 27/12/2018 20:09

Why is it fair enough? I've lived here for 20 years, British husband, British children, full member of community, teacher. Why the fuck do I have to apply for permission to stay????

pointythings · 27/12/2018 20:12

avenueq I actually feel the same, but the UK decided to change the rules. And compared to the cost of Indefinite Leave to Remain it's actually peanuts.

Not that DDs and I are staying here - once they have completed their education, we are off out of this country. I don't like what it has become.

Longtime · 27/12/2018 21:00

I’m the other side of this coin. Living in Belgium for 33 years, Belgian dh. Like avenueq, I’m pissed off I will have to ask to stay. I have the paperwork done now to apply for citizenship but it won’t be through (takes four months) before Brexit. Yes I should have done it earlier but I’m pissed off I even have to do this (though appreciate that I am able to be a dual national, unlike Brits in some other countries like the Netherlands who aren’t offered this option).

recently · 27/12/2018 21:01

Four months is quick! Four years for citizenship in Italy. Sad

Bombardier25966 · 27/12/2018 21:09

The leave voters I knew didn't want this, they wanted all immigrants gone. They think we've enough of our own specialist healthcare workers to staff the NHS, and can't understand why their operations are already being pushed back due to insufficient staff. But they're still happy because "democracy".

(And yes, they're real. I've had to spend Christmas with them.)

I think it's horrible. We're all people, that's what should matter, not where we might have been born.

pointythings · 27/12/2018 21:14

Citizens of nowhere, bombardier... That's the kind of country the UK has become - xenophobic, inward-looking. Fortunately DDs and I have those nice red passports that will allow us to get out, we have money, we have a mortgage-free house to sell. So that'll be another NHS worker the UK will have to do without then.

The way I see it, the UK doesn't deserve the likes of us any more.

Neweternal · 27/12/2018 22:04

On the plus side don't think you can get this if you have a criminal record. Is it not you have to be looking after yourself for 5 years too? Seems fair. I voted Brexit and certainly don't want valued migrants to feel they have to go home.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 27/12/2018 23:12

It's utterly abhorrent... Treating our friends /families /colleagues like aliens... People who are net contributors, many of whom have been here for decades...

If you can't see what's wrong with this, I pity you.

No wonder people feel so bloody unwelcome...

Dear Racist Leave voters- you should be ashamed at what society is coming to... I hope you are at the back of the queue when medical lists lengthen... This is YOUR doing

Stufftheturkeysholewithholly · 27/12/2018 23:22

Yeah we Irish knew about this about a year ago. Its grand like - honestly if this is the worst of brexit I would be happy and shut up about it.

selepele · 28/12/2018 05:16

And so they should if they paid taxes and helped this country in some way it’s their home now

OftenHangry · 28/12/2018 09:18

@Stufftheturkeysholewithholly I am with you on that.

Things change. That happens. The fact that it's only £65 and it's still different to non EU papers is good result. It could have been much, much worse.
