When making a booking; such as a table at a restaurant; a taxi or even ordering a takeaway I always use my surname.

I’ve noticed that more and more people around me are using their first names for things like this.

I went out for dinner not too long ago with some friends and out the table under my surname as I normally would. One friend said I was being snobby; and the other jumped in to say she didn’t think I was being snobby; just old fashioned!

Am I?

I always give my full name? Is that weird?? I thought everyone did full name!!

lavalampoon · 26/12/2018 14:23

Full name when I make the reservation, give surname when I arrive. If your name was something common like Anne or Dave how confusing could that end up being?

TheWiseWomansFear · 26/12/2018 14:41

Surname, or DPs surname usually tbh

DramaAlpaca · 26/12/2018 14:50

Surname, always

CandyCreeper · 26/12/2018 15:11

first name

recently · 26/12/2018 15:20

My husband's surname as mine is foreign and needs spelling.

Cookit · 26/12/2018 16:00

First name. But surname is hard to spell and I have to spell it out twenty times on the phone and they usually get it wrong.

PhannyMcNee · 26/12/2018 16:01

First name because surname is difficult to spell and pronounce.

brizzledrizzle · 26/12/2018 16:02

Surname

primoestate · 26/12/2018 16:03

First name. So much simpler.

StrawberrySquash · 26/12/2018 16:04

Surname generally, but I've been doing first name more, especially as my surname is a male first name and once confused a taxi driver who was looking for a bloke.

Subtlecheese · 26/12/2018 16:05

My first name was massively common for my age group, so I just give first and last name. The restaurant then use whichever they prefer. Usually my surname as it's not quite an insult

BrokenWing · 26/12/2018 16:11

Surname or full name. Surname isn't old fashioned or snobby, it's common practice. I'd you give your full name they usually only write down your surname anyway.

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 26/12/2018 16:13

I have a Starbucks name too, as my real name is foreign and, while not uncommon or difficult to spell, potentially unfamiliar in a busy coffee shop and i don't want faff. Bookings always under surname (the only exception would be if I were already on first-name terms with the person I was booking with).

QueenDoris · 26/12/2018 16:18

I always book under Her Royal Highness

Generally means I get a decent table

VforVienetta · 26/12/2018 17:13

First name always, as my married name is either misspelt or mispronounced, either way it causes confusion.
Might just go with Bob from now on, thanks PP!
