To ask if anyone has raynauds and what helps them?

Husband is really suffering with raynauds in one foot. Struggling to walk etc. Wondered if there’s anything I can do / buy that may help soothe it a bit. He’s really having trouble sleeping with the pain too.

I have Raynauds but I usually manage it by trying not to get cold e.g. 2 pairs of gloves or socks ,lots of layers, never go out without a hat etc
If symptoms do kick in, I just try to warm up quickly but gradually. Rubbing the affected area can help. But it sounds like your husband may have another underlying condition. I wouldn't expect Raynauds alone to be stopping him sleeping as the symptoms don't last that long.

My daughter took cbd oil % from Holland and Barrett and it cleared it up. When she ran out , it came back so she bought some more x

My mum has always suffered with it - about 10 years ago she was finally given medication for it which has really helped, so he should go to his GP and explain the detrimental effect it's having on his quality of life.

She wears fingerless gloves inside all winter, wool socks, and dresses like a Sherpa at all times. Even in summer she's very careful.

You can still get those gel heat packs with the little disc that snaps to make it heat up (boil to reuse), those are good to keep in his coat for emergencies.

Sheepskin slippers. Fleecey slipper socks.

Pointlessquestions · 25/12/2018 21:22

I have it and can get by with extra layers and keeping inside if it's freezing. It sounds worse than that though- my dad has it really badly and has to go for infusions to prevent damage occurring in his feet and hands. I would go to the go to have it checked out.

ItIsChristmasTime · 25/12/2018 21:22

Keeping warm but it seems odd to me that it is only in one foot and causing such prolonged issues. I get both feet and hands affected by it. Has he seen a rheumatologist to rule out anything else?

Ta1kinpeace · 25/12/2018 21:23

One foot does not sound like Raynauds
it sounds like gout
is the foot cold and yellow / purple
or it is at all hot and swollen ?

Thermal socks for Raynauds
Doctor for gout

Amara123 · 25/12/2018 21:25

First make sure that there isn't something else going on, get GP to check over +/- referral to vascular surgeon.
Secondly prevention of cold is the most important thing, pain gets worse when blood supply returns after cut off. Hot showers and baths, warm gloves, boots instead of shoes etc.
Smoking is a major no no, so if smoking quitting is the single best thing he can do, it reduces blood supply and exacerbates the problem.

MorningsEleven · 25/12/2018 21:25

My Raynauds never affects just one side/extremity. The key is several layers and keeping wrists and ankles warm.

overmydeadbody · 25/12/2018 21:28

Sorels were a game changer for me, I wear them from November till march note every time I go out, with wool socks.

Indoors I wear proper sheepskin slippers all the time to keep my feet warm. It's the only way.

Pibplob · 25/12/2018 21:28

He has another condition that it could be linked to but they don’t think it is linked. The consultant thinks it’s raynauds but it is causing a lot of pain. He will mention it to them yet again and see if they’ll consider it is something else. He’s struggling to walk and sleep. That’s not normal then? His foot goes blue and then white and is freezing to the touch. It goes tingly and numb and then the pain starts.

Isleepinahedgefund · 25/12/2018 21:29

Has he been to the doctor about it? It doesn’t sound like Raynauds to me. Mine never keeps me awake or lasts that long, and it’s generally not only on one side. I’ve never had trouble walking when it affects my feet either.

Suggest he gets to the doctor ASAP, especially if the usual things like warm water bottle etc aren’t working. Sheepskin is really good too.

ToffeePennie · 25/12/2018 21:30

I have it but due to my medical history I can’t fake medication for it. Which is a pain in the bum.
I wear gloves inside if it’s particularly cold outside, always two layers of socks. The really important thing is to keep your core thermally warm so I have a hot water bottle in a belt which I can strap to my chest. I also have small heat pouches which I keep in my pockets and I have microwaveable slippers.

silverlace · 25/12/2018 21:31

If he gets cold a warm bath to get his whole body warm then socks and a hot water bottle in bed.

The best thing I have ever found is real sheepskin boots like Uggs or Celtic and Co. If my feet are warm the rest of me is usually warm including my fingers.

Also you can get single us footwarmers quick stick to the sole of you foot and last for 5 hours. Excellent for winter walks etc.

Isleepinahedgefund · 25/12/2018 21:32

Cross post! I’d go back to consultant and ask again.

RedSkyLastNight · 25/12/2018 21:34

Extremities getting cold, going white or blue , feeling numb and tingling or pain as sensation comes back does sound like Raynauds. The only getting it in one foot and the length of time the symptoms take to subside doesn't. Does he still get symptoms even if he tries very hard to keep warm e.g. as suggested on this thread?

36degrees · 25/12/2018 21:36

I have Reynauds and try never to get cold, but if I do, I pop to the gym to reheat in the jacuzzi or sauna. Our bath at home doesn't get hot or deep enough to warm all of me up again once cold has set in to my feet. I just got an electric blanket which really helps at night, and wear cashmere bedsocks, too.

Unescorted · 25/12/2018 21:37

Not wearing tight socks or gloves. Fingerless gloves makes mine worse. Also temperature changes - it can come on even in summer just by moving from Aircon to outside or vice versa. Stress is another trigger.

Today my legs were sweating and my hands were white to under the life line crease. Just from going from the warm to the cold and back again.

C0untDucku1a · 25/12/2018 21:38

For me it is many layers rarher than one thick layer. Three pairs of gloves, rather than one thick pair. Two pairs of socks...

It is painful for me when my toes are white and VERY PAINFUL when my toes start to warm up and go from white to pink. They dont stay painful though. My fingers i can cope better with.

just having it in one foot seems a bit weird and id be asking for a referral.

Does he smoke?

C0untDucku1a · 25/12/2018 21:38

Oh there is about one week in summer when it is hot enough for me not to wear bed socks at night!

PositiveAttitude · 25/12/2018 21:47

I have been put on medication for Reynauds this winter and I cant tell you how much my life has changed!!! 24 hours after taking my first dose I stopped getting symptoms and the only time I have had an attack since has been when I forgot to take my medication. Revolutionary!!! I now realise how much it was affecting my life - how I was always trying to avoid getting cold. I used to buy shoes at least 2 sizes bigger so I could wear socks and slipper socks as well.

My raynauds only affected my right hand, right toes and my nose. Definitely Reynauds, though!!

MorningsEleven · 25/12/2018 21:51

The worst thing is when it's mid heatwave and you can actually feel your fingers then you pop into a supermarket for a pint of milk and come out with wax hands. So bloody frustrating.

Pibplob · 25/12/2018 21:51

It all sounds like raynauds except for the length of time and the fact it’s only in one foot? How strange. I wonder if it is something else, what it would be.

He can honestly only hobble about most of the day. The pain is worse some days that others but always some sort of pain.

Can’t drive anymore either most of the time due to the numbness. Only now and again when the pain isn’t as bad but he never knows how that would be.

Yes he smokes. He’s cutting down but not at the ok t if quitting yet.

I have it but not to that extent. Can he experiment with maximum foot warmth one day and see if it helps? Have a hot bath while thermal socks and slippers sit on the radiator, immediately put them on once he's out, feet on a hot water bottle/wrapped in an electric blanket etc. You can get an electric foot warming gadget that looks like giant slippers. I've never tried it but I love the idea of it.

I keep on top of it by never letting my feet get remotely cold. My slippers are my most expensive shoes because proper sheepskin keeps your feet warmer than anything. Thick socks always, never even consider sterling directly on our tile bathroom floor etc.

SignOnTheWindow · 25/12/2018 22:21

The key to managing mine is never to let my extremities get to the point of going numb because then I can't warm them up unless I get in the bath.

I have foot warmers in my boots when I go out. Heated clothes made for motorcyclists. Inside the house I have a plug-in foot warmer - like a big slipper. I wear hot water bottles strapped to my chest and back.

Always gloves - even in summer if it's raining. Wet weather and touching anything cold (metal door handle, car steering wheel etc.) can trigger a response.
