To think a biscuit is meant to be patronising?

Biscuit

Just been reading a thread where someone has asked the meaning of the Mumsnet biscuit (or bum hole, as they suggested Grin) and was interested to see that several posters defined it somewhat differently to how I'd always interpreted it.

Someone said it was symbolising shutting someone up with a biscuit.
Someone else said its a "you're not worthy of a reply, so I'll biscuit you instead" sort of response.

In my mind its a vaguely patronising, "oh diddums... Here have a biscuit" type thing.

I've been on Mumsnet a while... Have I got it wrong all this time? Shock

It’s no comment, I think.

@InspectorIkmen 😝

I thought it was meant to symbolise ‘this is too stupid for me to even comment on’. People wishing to be particularly cutting may emphasise that they don’t use it often - ‘Have my first ever Biscuit’.

Wounding, I think you’ll agree.

PositiveVibez · 25/12/2018 16:26

I think it covers a multitude of things, but the top and bottom of it is that whoever posts the biscuit in response to a poster, is basically saying 'i think you're a twat'

I like it 😂

GlitterStick · 25/12/2018 16:27

Ha, that was me that used the biscuit on that thread lol.
Well deserved, I hand them out sparingly Grin

From what I can gather, it's a no comment emoticon.
Back in the midst of time Gordon Brown came onto MN for a live chat and answered questions but refused to comment on what his favourite biscuit was.
We now get a biscuit emoticon - it means no comment/not bothering to answer cos you ridiculous type thing.
Do I win a prize?! Grin

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2018 16:28

No, to me it just means 'no comment'. There's a history to it when a politician wouldn't answer 'what is your favourite biscuit?' on here

ThatPeskyElf · 25/12/2018 16:29

I thought it meant “you tit”

GlitterStick · 25/12/2018 16:29

Ha beat you to it @sparklingbrook Smile

AllKinds · 25/12/2018 16:30

Yup, it means no comment.

I use it when it's an obvious idiot/troll as an OP.

BanginChoons · 25/12/2018 16:32

In my head it means "that comment takes the biscuit"

starcrossedseahorse · 25/12/2018 16:33

I thought it was a definite 'you are a **' insert insult of choice here.

SemperIdem · 25/12/2018 16:36

I thought the biscuit icon was essentially calling someone a twat.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 25/12/2018 16:38

I read it as patronising. Like, “can’t be bothered to comment, dickhead”

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 25/12/2018 16:53

I thought it was 'this takes the biscuit '

saveforthat · 25/12/2018 16:54

It's that takes the biscuit

HunterHearstHelmsley · 25/12/2018 16:55

I've always read it as 'it/you/your face takes the biscuit'.

ChristmasFluff · 25/12/2018 16:58

I always interpreted it as being the person thinking that 'this takes the biscuit' - and so providing one

TheLittlestLightOnTheTree · 25/12/2018 17:01

I remember the Gordon brown chat.... I was on it. the biscuit thing came about whilst waiting for him to come online....we were chatting with MNHQ .... one of us asked what biscuits they had got in to greet him with.... so then a long chat ensued about best/favourite biscuits

We then asked Gordon which biscuit was his fave ( then went on to ask more ctedivle questions) but the media picked up on the biscuit question and we were portrayed as silly little housewives who just shopped for biscuits.

MixedMaritalArts · 25/12/2018 17:02

I’m giving a biscuit ‘cos this poster already ‘took the biscuit’ - so a new one is needed dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/that-really-takes-the-biscuit

NameChangeOhNameChange1 · 25/12/2018 17:04

Oh God yeah I remember that now, Gordons Mystery Biscuits!

I think he answered later in a newspaper.... was it choc chip shortbread or something?

It was in the papers for almost s week! Every one seemed to pick up on it

Then the mumsnet headgirls came along and told us off for making us all look thick and not capable of asking proper political questions

missyB1 · 25/12/2018 17:06

I’ve always wished it was a custard cream rather than jammy dodger

TheLittlestLightOnTheTree · 25/12/2018 17:06

Happy days when MN was smaller with good quality trolls and HQ were on threads with us

DarcieStarlight · 25/12/2018 17:06

I always thought it was "I'm gonna sit down with a brew and a biscuit and watch this all kick off".
