Having a sip of gin whilst pregnant?

CobaltRose96 · 25/12/2018 12:08

Hi all.

I'm currently 29+3 with my first baby and have so far completely avoided alcohol. However, today I had a tiny sip of my partner's gin and tonic and didn't think much of it. However, my partner's mum seemed horrified that I was 'drinking a spirit' when pregnant. Now I'm a little worried Sad

It was the tiniest sip. I understand that alcohol is best avoided in pregnancy and so far that tiny sip of gin is the only alcohol I've had or plan to have. Have any other pregnant ladies indulged a little?

A tiny sip of gin will not harm you or the baby. Mothers used to be advised to drink Guinness and Gripe water had alcohol in it.

Don't be daft girl! A little sip is fine. Apparently it is fine to have a couple of units a week but we are all told to avoid alcohol altogether because some people don't know when to stop. You're not like if all you've had since finding out you are pregnant is one sip of alcohol.

Hic, burp!

Merry Christmas to you.

Alfiesmom74 · 25/12/2018 12:11

I had a few small glasses of Baileys when I was pregnant and everything was fine. A little bit of what you like does you the power of good. Merry Christmas.

dinodiva · 25/12/2018 12:13

Oh hell yes. I completely went off red wine but a weekly weak white wine spritzer in trimesters 2 and 3 and occasional celebratory prosecco hit the spot.

I think it was very kind of you to taste it for your partner - presumably a quality check?!

Oblomov18 · 25/12/2018 12:13

Totally fine. Even a very occasional drink does no harm.

gemsparkle84 · 25/12/2018 12:14

You're completely fine. It's personal choice. I worked in a restaurant and many a time a pregnant lady had a (large) glass of wine with a meal. Unit for unit one large glass of wine (3 units) is 3 gin and tonics (1 unit per 25ml). A gin and tonic is far more diluted than a glass of wine which is much stronger. Don't over indulge but don't worry about it either.

CobaltRose96 · 25/12/2018 12:15

Thank you all! It was lovely Grin I'm a naturally anxious person anyway and have previously had a miscarriage so her horror at my little indulgence didn't help.

Merry Christmas! Xmas Grin

I’m 27 weeks and am having a glass of Prosecco with my Xmas dinner!

BeanTownNancy · 25/12/2018 12:30

Had a glass of prosecco last night in the bath. Will have another glass today. (I'm 21 weeks). For years, decades, centuries, women have drunk wine and beer while pregnant and the human race has survived. Obviously follow the advice if you can - we know more now than we did then - but don't panic yourself about something so small. Stress and anxiety is definitely worse for you and the baby than a one-off drink of alcohol. Take a deep breath and try to enjoy yourself.

keenkaren · 25/12/2018 12:33

You really have to be going at it to cause danger with alcohol. The reason people don't drink at all is to avoid getting carried away but if you're only a casual drinker anyway no problems

mortifiedmama · 25/12/2018 12:34

Your MIL is being precious. It's fine. Ill be having a glass of prosecco (around 80ml), a small red wine AND a Bailey's over the course of today. I'm 34 weeks, I last had a small glass of prosecco at a wedding in October!

Grimbles · 25/12/2018 12:36

I had a glass of red last night and will be having another after dinner this evening.

London91 · 25/12/2018 12:38

A sip is fine, I think she is just being overly dramatic. Think of how many people used to drink as normal years ago through their entire pregnancy. Confused

RoseAndRose · 25/12/2018 12:58

Having the odd drink isn't going to cause any harm

There are probably fewer units in a single gin than in a glass of wine.

GlassLantern · 25/12/2018 13:48

If it doesn't affect you then it won't affect the baby.

YoungLennyGodber · 25/12/2018 13:50

A sip is fine! Enjoy it Smile

Teeandee · 25/12/2018 14:32

I'm 23 weeks, I'll be having a G&T after dinner. Don't worry about it

starcrossedseahorse · 25/12/2018 14:35

I wouldn't.

WeeBeasties · 25/12/2018 14:42

I'm 29 weeks and last night had a little sip of DH's Gin and Dubonnet. I figured at this late stage a sip isn't going to harm.

I was due on NYE and when midnight hit and I showed no signs of turning up my mum threw caution to the wind and cracked open the Jack Daniels. I stayed in a further week and no harm was done (except I hate JD. May not be related).

WeeBeasties · 25/12/2018 14:43

*39 weeks, that should say.

VimFuego101 · 25/12/2018 15:55

A sip is fine. I imagine that even mouthwash or fruit cake contains much more alcohol than that.

teacakes44 · 25/12/2018 18:21

Hammered both times when I got pregnant. Both fine!😀

explodingkitten · 25/12/2018 18:30

Just take it slow. I gulped a half glass of wine last pregnancy (the baby wasn't alive anymore so I figured I could drink, should have started with a sip) and it made me feel very sick.

SparkyBlue · 25/12/2018 18:38

I am planning on having a glass of wine tonight. Please don't worry OP.
