To ask you to help me with this antibiotics prescription?

I have twins. Both have a chest infection. 8 months old, exact same weight. Why the different dose? This must be a mistake, right? I've only just noticed this and now I don't know what to do. Panicking a bit as I don't want to give too much! Currently planning to use the 125 for both babies until I can speak to the GP.

Yep looks like they have given one of your twins the wrong dose..

I would give them both the 125 until you can get it sorted

baby410 · 24/12/2018 19:39

My daughter is on amoxicillin for a chest infection at the moment. I'm feeding her to sleep at the moment but will check the bottle when she is down.
You could maybe search the bnf online to see what the dose should be x

ErictheGuineaPig · 24/12/2018 19:41

You can ring 111 for stuff like this and they should be able to advise you over the phone. I would stick with the lower dose until you have advice - just like you said.

Is one being given 5ml and the other 10?

yunalis · 24/12/2018 19:41

Are the instructions on the labels the same?

John4703 · 24/12/2018 19:42

Phone 111 and ask for advice.

dementedpixie · 24/12/2018 19:43

I have found this online

Did they tell you how much to give of each one? If the volume of each dose is twice as much for the 125 bottle then the amount of drug would be the same.

GetSchwifty · 24/12/2018 19:46

Do the pharmacy labels match the strength on the box?

GraceHolly · 24/12/2018 19:46

5ml is the dose of the medicine. The 125/250 is the size of the box.

GraceHolly · 24/12/2018 19:47

Bottle not box

Violetroselily · 24/12/2018 19:48

What do the prescription labels say?

JuniperBeer · 24/12/2018 19:48

Do the labels match on the boxes? Eg, could me half dosage on the double strength one?

HardAsSnails · 24/12/2018 19:48

No it isn't Grace, it's per 5ml, that's what the /5ml means.

LuckyLou7 · 24/12/2018 19:49

Phone 111, they will be able to give you some advice for the time being. Hope your babies are better soon.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 24/12/2018 19:49

I guess you don’t know if it was the Dr or pharmacy? Have you still got the back copy of the prescription, might have the doses on it?

agedknees · 24/12/2018 19:49

What do the pharmacy labels say on each box?

Grimbles · 24/12/2018 19:49

The 125/250 is the amount of active ingredient in each 5ml dose. Therefore a 5ml dose from the 250 is double the dose of actual anti-biotic than a 5ml dose from the 125 box.

JellycatElfie · 24/12/2018 19:50

Have you been told to give one 5ml and one 2.5ml? That would mean both were given 125mg just that the strength per ml is different ?

Sirzy · 24/12/2018 19:50

grace

That means in one there is 125mg of the medicine in 5mls, the other has 250mg in 5mls. So if you have 10mls of the 125 it wold be the same dose as 5mls of the 250

zebra · 24/12/2018 19:52

Looks like the pharmacy have messed up. An 8 month old should be on 125 mg of amox. There's nothing to stop you giving 2.5 ml of the 250 mg bottle if you run out of the other one. Hope LOs are feeling better soon.

Isittimeforbed · 24/12/2018 19:53

As pp said, the prescription label should match with the strength in your bottles and tell you the volume to give. That will tell you if there’s a mistake or if they only had different concentrations available. Ideally it should have been highlighted to you when you collected if it was the latter.

agedknees · 24/12/2018 19:53

Grace, that is totally wrong.

Box 1 has 125mg of Amox per 5mls.

Box 2 has 250mg of Amox per 5mls.

So box 2 is double the dos of box 1.
