Too young for abc mouse?

Has anyone used abc mouse with their kids? How young is too young?

My dd is 21 months and absolutely loves playing on her tablet. She is able to navigate it quite well and plays a few free learning games on it/understands how to play them if you show her first. Was going to get a subscription to it for Christmas but not sure if she would be too young.

Whoops. Meant to post in education.

21 months is too young to be great at navigating a table IMO, how much screen time does she have ?!

Eliza9917 · 24/12/2018 16:02

Isn't 21mo also a bit young to have your own tablet?

Cherries101 · 24/12/2018 16:03

My dn got one at 18 mths and is using it just fine under supervision. Depends on the child really.

Elphie54 · 24/12/2018 16:08

She has had the tablet for 4 months now and recognizes the icons that gets her where she wants to be. It’s designed for kids and we got it for her since she was always taking our cell phones. She also changes YouTube videos to what she wants etc. she only gets one charge per day on it (so about 2 hours). Was not looking for criticism of her having a tablet or not.

Two hours a day screen time for a child under two is excessive, children need person to.person interaction not screens, especially at that age

Elphie54 · 24/12/2018 16:22

Once again-wasn’t looking for advice about the tablet. Was just asking about abc mouse. Not going to argue or justify her tablet usage.

Probably should get it moved to education. You will get a lot of people telling you it’s too much screen time on aibu (because it is a lot of screen time)

cariadlet · 24/12/2018 16:27

To be honest, if it's moved to education there will be the same message that 2 hours is far too much screen time for a 21 month old - especially if any early years experts come on to the thread.

Elphie54 · 24/12/2018 16:29

So is anyone going to answer the actual question instead of trying to lecture/judge about screen time?

Tragic!

Yes. Your child is too young for abc mouse or any type of screen time

Elphie54 · 24/12/2018 16:33

“Tragic” excuse me?

I don’t think there’s much point in getting any kind of ‘educational’ subscription for a baby tbh. We didn’t bother with anything like that until school age for (home educated) ds1 although ds2 also does some of the easier bits at 3 because he wants to do what his brother does. At your child’s age I’d concentrate on open ended toys and learning where you interact with her (singing songs, reading stories, crafts and messy play, chatting about things around you), she’ll benefit much more than worrying about teaching things like phonics, there’s no need that young. If you want to let her have a tablet just stick to free games.

You can't post something on AIBU and then be surprised when people express an opinion on what you've posted.

Elphie54 · 24/12/2018 16:46

Madratlady

Thank you. Wasn’t sure what the “hardness” level was. She does the shape matching free games but wasn’t sure how it compares in terms of toughness. She has lots of open ended toys and we sing/read to her as well. We had ordered “tadpole crates” (the monthly boxes that came with different things each month) but they were rather useless and she didn’t really have any interest in them after about of playing with each one.

“You can't post something on AIBU and then be surprised when people express an opinion on what you've posted.”

Already said I meant to post it on education first of all. On top of that, I already said I wasn’t looking for opinions on here having a tablet/wasn’t my question yet people want to still harp on it even after I said that. That is very rude and not helpful at all.

I think abc mouse is suggested for 2-2.5+ but you can get a free trial to have a look?

I was looking into it for my dd who will be turning 2 but holding off for now

Elphie54 · 24/12/2018 16:53

“I think abc mouse is suggested for 2-2.5+ but you can get a free trial to have a look?”

There is? Didn’t know that. Will look into that.

“This is so sad. Poor kid.”

Seriously?? So because I allow my daughter screen time we are bad parents? How offensive and really upsetting.

OP posts:
foggetyfog · 24/12/2018 17:05

I'm gobsmacked you think it's OK to let a less than 2 year old play on a tablet for 2 hours a day. Don't be so lazy, do some parenting.

Elphie54 · 24/12/2018 17:07

Not sure why people like to say such hurtful comments here but do kindly step off.

OP posts:
Mandapanda85 · 24/12/2018 17:10

Actually there are studies out there that show screen time actually has benefit in development (in moderation) of fine motor skills among other things. And no I'm not providing links to anyone wishing to flame me down - do it yourself.

Clearly OP has posted on the wrong board, but is free to parent any way she chooses. OP ignore all the 'oh tragic, poor child comments' - you're in for a few of them I'm afraid!

Elphie54 · 24/12/2018 17:22

Mandapanda25

I usually wouldn’t care, but I’m already feeling incredibly low/horrible because I am working tonight and tomorrow night, therefore don’t get to spend much of the holiday with dd. It’s making me a bit more sensitive and hurts being called a bad parent when already down.
