I’m pregnant and Mil has stuffed the meat with a stuffing containing liver. I know I can’t eat the liver but will it be ok to have the meat or will the juices have too much vitamin A in? It’s a rolled joint with stuffing in the middle so all the meat will have been close to stuffing.

You'll be fine.

CountessVonBoobs · 24/12/2018 15:22

Of course it will. You're not even eating any liver! How much vitamin A do you think could possibly have permeated something else? You actually can eat liver anyway. The NHS suggests you just don't have it more than once a week.

Cherries101 · 24/12/2018 15:22

The NHS advises pregnant women to avoid liver and products that contain liver. So yes you will need to give the meat a miss. Has she made anything else for you to eat?

Cherries101 · 24/12/2018 15:23

Aquamarine1029 · 24/12/2018 15:24

You and your baby will be perfectly fine. Relax, FGS.

Cherries101 · 24/12/2018 15:24

@countess — the general liver (and liver products) advice differs for pregnant women. They must avoid it.

cestlavielife · 24/12/2018 15:24

Should avoid means just that. Don't eat the stuffing. The rest will be fine

newmun · 24/12/2018 15:26

I dont think cherries read the page properly 😂 you can eat it.

Bambamber · 24/12/2018 15:26

I would personally avoid it to be on the safe side. Probably being over cautious, but if I'm not sure if something is going to be safe or not, I just avoid it

newmun · 24/12/2018 15:27

However, because they are such a rich source of vitamin A, we should be careful not to eat too much liver and liver product foods.

TruckLoadOfSubtleGlitter · 24/12/2018 15:28

Cherries that link says you can eat liver.

OP it would be fine to eat the meat and even a bit of the liver.
But avoid the liver if you're worried. I would have done.

Cherries101 · 24/12/2018 15:28

@newmun — I don’t think you read it properly mate. The advice to avoid liver and liver producrs is as clear as mud Wink

HermioneWaslib · 24/12/2018 15:29

It is the main Christmas meal, so could avoid it but would be awkward. Not awkward to scrape the stuffing out. I was hoping someone with some expert knowledge of how much vitamin A is too much would be along, instead you lot are just voicing the conflicting thoughts in my head!

OP posts:
Confusedbeetle · 24/12/2018 15:29

This is another example of ridiculous advice. The logic is that a vast amount of Vitamin A would be a bad thing, like liver every day. Now here is where the NHS typically does not trust women to use their brains and common sense, The amount of vitamin A in the meal is negligible, Vitamin A is fat soluble and therefore not excreted in urine. This means if you ate Vitamin A rich foods every day for the pregnancy it would accumulate. One meal is nothing, I get so cross about this its like the soft cheese and pate thing. Nobody in France takes a blind bit of notice. The list of foods pregnant women are supposed to avoid grows every year. I feel sorry for your MIL. Countess Von Boobs sums it up perfectly. Cherries101 you are wrong

costacoffeecup · 24/12/2018 15:32

The meat will be fine. Up to you if you eat the stuffing but no need to avoid the tasty meat too!!

isseywithcats · 24/12/2018 15:32

i am so glad that i was pregnant way back in the 1970s/80s then i wasnt told what i could eat and what i couldnt and i have three grown up children who have no allergies and are very healthy, i feel sorry for pregnant ladies nowadays , obviously when i was pregnant i didnt eat silly i ate healthy and allergies didnt seem so rife then

Huggybear16 · 24/12/2018 15:34

As a one time thing, you'll be absolutely fine. Enjoy your Christmas dinner and don't give it another thought.

ememem84 · 24/12/2018 15:35

We’re having similar for Christmas dinner tomorrow. I’m about 7/8 weeks pregnant. I’m just not eating the stuffing. (Sadly as im my opinion that’s the best bit!!)

DameSquashalot · 24/12/2018 15:37

The link says pregnant women.should avoid liver 🤔

gemsparkle84 · 24/12/2018 15:37

I'm pregnant I would eat the meat no problem. I'd probably eat the stuffing too in moderation as it will have been cooked. Lots of different food has vitamin A in including spinach (which I eat loads of) and oranges. Part of the problem with liver products such as pate is it's MORE LIKELY to contain listeria than other meat products, I believe due to the production process. A one off small serving of something containing cooked pate is not going to hurt you or baby. I'd feel quite reassured and even if you don't want to eat the stuffing the meat will be fine.

FenellasRedVelvetDress · 24/12/2018 15:37

You will be fine sweetheart.
If you fancy the stuffing have a spoonful - the amount of liver in it will be tiny.
Don’t stress the small stuff.

gemsparkle84 · 24/12/2018 15:37

Sorry don't know why I said pate!

HermioneWaslib · 24/12/2018 15:38

I think / hope you’re right confusedbeatle but have to stick up for cherries, that link is not specifically for pregnant women so there is a section saying once a week for everyone and then a separate bit saying pregnant women should avoid liver all together.

OP posts:
Confusedbeetle · 24/12/2018 15:38

Just going back to the soft cheese, most people know folks who have had norovirus or even salmonella. Does anyone actually know a person who has been properly diagnosed with listeria? I dont

easyandy101 · 24/12/2018 15:39

I dont think cherries read the page properly 😂 you can eat it.

The page says you shouldn't if you're pregnant
