To ask if you have a memory foam mattress, how well it has lasted?

I am thinking of buying one of the memory foam mattresses in the new year sales, but was just wondering if anyone who has had one for a year or more would let me know whether they go saggy, or whether they maintain their comfort?

TIA!

We've had ours for 3.5 years and it's almost as good now as it was when we got it. Obviously it's not quite as firm, but it's holding up well and we are both big people. It's a Tempur one.

I had my Memory-foam mattress for 10 years; only just got a new one. It was still comfortable, but memory-foam is hot, and it tends to create a little hole for your body where it sinks in. then it is a bit of an excavation to roll over!

I bought a wool one now - it's a lot 'harder/firmer, but when I sleep on the memory foam one now (I gave it to DP - we don't live together) I find it gives me a bad back.

My new one is this one

I didn’t like the memory foam mattress I had. It was my niece’s and virtually new.. I found it very hit and sweaty.

However after doing some reading there seems to be a world of difference between good quality memory foam and other memory foam so do your research before buying.

Meanwhile I am happily back with a sprung mattress and no regrets.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 24/12/2018 15:03

Yes Tempur as mentioned above is the gold standard I gather,

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/12/2018 15:04

They are hard to shag on - baffle all your movements!

babysharkah · 24/12/2018 15:05

Mine is 12 years old, we're just thinking abut getting a new one now.

EverythingsDozy · 24/12/2018 15:07

No advice but following with interest. I currently have a sprung mattress which must be around 7 years old and it's the most uncomfortable horrid thing ever. At the moment, I have a duvet under my fitted sheet to make it bearable

VictoriaBun · 24/12/2018 15:07

We have had ours for 9 years and feel it is still ok. However, in the new year we are going back to a pocket sprung one. Mainly because they are extremely heavy ( and I'm getting old !) and my oh had back problems which feel worse in the morning so going orthopaedic.

easyandy101 · 24/12/2018 15:08

Annoyingly well because we hate it

Rafflesway · 24/12/2018 15:26

Ooh that looks nice Ciderhouse!

Not seen a wool one before. I prefer a firmer mattress too.

HollowTalk · 24/12/2018 15:32

I hate mine! I feel like I'm climbing a mountain whenever I turn over.

Wagonwheelsandjammydodgers · 24/12/2018 15:51

Love our Leesa one. Wouldn't go back to a sprung one now

BibiThree · 24/12/2018 16:30

I don't find mine particularly warm, and I run warm, but as others have said, it is very heavy and moving around on them is tough. But, I sleep so much better not being disturbed by DH moving around at night, it isolates his restless movements very effectively indeed.

Grilledaubergines · 24/12/2018 16:33

6 years after buying it we’ve got rid and have gone back to a sprung mattress. 3 of those years it’s been awful. Very hot. Poor support.

BeanTownNancy · 25/12/2018 00:09

6 years in. I love it. Have ulnar nerve damage so need it because normal sprung mattresses hurt me. Absolutely love that DH's violent turning over no longer wakes me - no movement on my side of the bed. Have no major issues with sex, though it is slightly harder work as you don't have the bounce to help you. :D No sagging (of the mattress, not going to talk about me). It was a cheapish mattress I bought on Amazon - mine only has thin (2" or so) layer of memory foam on top of support foam - think much more than that and you sink too much and get extra hot and stuck.

I bought a "cooling" mattress topper for the summer and found it so good I have kept it on.

Maryjoyce · 25/12/2018 00:15

Awful thing and caused terrible back ache I cut it up and made long cushions for benches and it’s of use now

tablelegs · 25/12/2018 00:22

First one for 8 years then bought another because it started to dip. Next one we threw out after 2 years because it was so firm and sweaty.

Got a latex mattress and never looked back, well worth the price tag.

MyArris · 25/12/2018 00:23

I hated mine. It lasted well but after 4 years, I got rid. It cost me £500+ and was horrible. Never again.

Onlysocks · 25/12/2018 00:32

Love my Tempur. Had it eight years and its not showing any sign of needing replacing whereas previous mattresses have lasted five years max due to our weight.
I agree with comments that it’s hard to turn over etc as you sink into the mattress but my back has never felt better after a night’s sleep. I love coming home from holiday and sleeping on my mattress again - reminds me just how good it is.
