Somebody rung my doorbell at 6.30am! Why??

I live on my own with my 2 children - 4 and 9 - and not in the nicest neighbourhood but honestly we have never had any problems. This morning though at 6.30am somebody rung my doorbell!

I went downstairs, peeped through the peephole and saw there was a person stood there but couldn't make out a face as it was dark. I asked through the door several times 'Who is it?' Very loudly I might add! And got no reply.

So I ran upstairs to get my phone - in case I needed to call the police - ran back to front door and proceeded to ask who they were again. Still no answer. So ran to my living room (3 storey house so this is upstairs) to look out the window to watch someone leaving but nobody left so they must have left the front door before I physically had eyes on it - window is locked so took a few seconds longer to locate the key.

I don't need to ask the question of if any of you would have opened the door as I'm fairly sure you would have all not opened it either but - I thought should I ring the police anyway on the non urgent line just to mention it? Bearing in mind I couldn't tell them anything about who it was.

Equally pretty worried about the house - we have motorbikes in the garage and it's that time of year isn't it!!!!

Ffs, it was a delivery. They ring the bell to let you know it’s there, then leave.

lottiegarbanzo · 24/12/2018 07:49

Amazon deliverer?

CrookedMe · 24/12/2018 07:50

Confused you would know the answer if you'd opened the door.

Running about in a panic because your doorbell rang. Honestly! MN is so weird and precious about doors!

Flowerpot2005 · 24/12/2018 07:51

lottie how do you know, where you there?

CryptoFascist · 24/12/2018 07:51

Pretty common for would be burglars to ring doorbells to check whether people are at home, I've had this happen to me. Police were very interested and drove around checking the area.
Christmas is prime time for burglaries too, you're right to be extra wary.

ushuaiamonamour · 24/12/2018 07:54

You do realise that 6:30 is daytime, don't you, even if it's not light yet? Working people are up and about; burglars and druggies and the big mean strangers who pose a vague threat to helpless mumsnetters probably aren't.

Futureisland · 24/12/2018 07:55

Don't think it would have been a parcel, I'm sure they can't start delivering before 7am. If it's a bad area then it was most likely someone drunk and at same door.

lottiegarbanzo · 24/12/2018 07:55

Flowerpot, a ? denotes a question, not a statement.

Flowerpot2005 · 24/12/2018 07:57

Lottie, apologies, I meant to quote the poster above you!

Nenic · 24/12/2018 07:58

It’s 6.30am not the middle of the night. Phoning the police would’ve been ridiculous.

PumpkinKitty82 · 24/12/2018 07:58

Equally though it could’ve been someone checking to see if you were home so they could break in , otherwise why would the person have not answered the numerous times they were asked what they wanted ?
A couple of break ins have happened round here in the early mornings recently as they want Christmas presents

lottiegarbanzo · 24/12/2018 07:58

I realised that when I went back and read the posts above Xmas Grin

mumof2sarah · 24/12/2018 07:58

I wouldn't have opened it either OP. I know it's scary and worrying but the fact the person has gone and there's been no more rings I wouldn't worry anymore. Enjoy your Christmas Eve with the children x

Christmasgone2018 · 24/12/2018 07:59

Any normal person would have answered the question as to who they were.
I live very rurally and we never get unexpected visitors. My door was knocked a few weeks ago late at night. When I asked through the door who it was the person relied 'john' Ffs that didn't make it any clearer so I was asking 'John who?' The response was along the lines of 'John Jones' I didn't know anyone called John. So I hesitantly opened the door to be told 'john' had broken down up the lane and was thirsty! I closed the door, got him some water and he went on his way. Fuck knows if it was real or not but made me twitchy

Someone I know had a drunk banging on his door one night, the drunk thought the road had been moved and now ran through friend's house. He was determined to get through the house so he could get home.

It was a drunk at the wrong house.

RyderWhiteSwan · 24/12/2018 08:03

You were wise to not open the door. You asked who it was and this was ignored. As pps have said, burglars will scout houses to ascertain whether or not they are occupied at certain times.

MagnificentSevenHeaven · 24/12/2018 08:04

This is Mumsnet, people don't open their doors at midday in the middle of summer unless the knocker has booked an appointment 3 weeks in advance. Grin So not unreasonable to have kept it shut early on a dark winters morning.

I personally can't say if I'd have opened it, it all depends on the "vibe" I was getting - you obviously had a bad feeling.

Unless you trip over a corpse on the door mat on your way out this morning, I'd say "no harm done".

I wouldn't ring Plod though.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 24/12/2018 08:04

DH opened the door at 6.40 this morning... it was a postman with a package.....

mumof2sarah · 24/12/2018 08:05

To the comments that burglars are in bed by now... I think not. A friend of mine woke up at 6:30 the other morning as her phone alarm went to a shadow passing her bedroom door, didn't think much of it just thought the light and trees outside were playing tricks. Walked downstairs to put the kettle on to her back door open and her car speeding off the drive. The same thing happened at the same time another house a few days earlier. I think by not answering the door but clearly shouting through the letter box is a much better thing to do as you never know who it is x

Demelzasdilemma · 24/12/2018 08:05

Our front door was knocked at 5.30 once. Sent OH down and the guy was wasted on something. He was very aggressive and I was poised to ring police but he cleared off. I rang 101 later and they said we should have rung at the time but thanked us for ringing later as they would add to local intelligence. I let the neighbours know to be vigilant. I would not have answered the door if I was on my own!

TraceyBond · 24/12/2018 08:08

I would have opened the door.

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/12/2018 08:09

You haven't ordered a supermarket delivery to come later have you? My Morrison's delivery once came at 6:30 am even though I'd booked the 7-8 slot.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 24/12/2018 08:12

I would've literally shit myself if I was you!

Really? If that happens when somebody rings your doorbell I hate to think what would happen if you witnessed something really scary.

JustABetterPlayer · 24/12/2018 08:12

Knock and run, a thoroughly fun game for drunk folk on their way home.
