I've been following this story with great interest because I'm a boring person with nothing better to do.
But I am now wondering several things

A. How can the police rule out terrorism when they don't know who is behind it. Im not saying it is But seems odd how you would rule out something without knowing who the perpertator is.

B. Why the couple who were arrested and named were so from only a tipoff.

C. Given the police are now offering a reward, does that mean they are unable to identify the perpetrators.

This whole thing is really strange.

piglet doh yes makes perfect sense.

LoisWilkerson1 · 23/12/2018 22:54

I think the drone story was put out there when they thought it was only a couple of flights needing grounded. My guess is terror threat and rather than panic everyone they used the drone story.

ManicUnicorn · 23/12/2018 22:56

Ive aired my thoughts on this on the other thread, but I'll say it again. It stinks of a cover up, what they are trying to cover up Ive no idea but I'm edging towards the police not having the foggiest and trying to cover their arses by arresting the first people they could try and pin it on.

We do t hear 99% of what goes on behind the scenes with anything.

Over the years there have been huge problems with terror attacks and racist attacks in the country that have been hidden by media blackout.

However if you know where to look ..... (not me btw!!! A friend of a friend does!)

Different news channels will report differing viewpoints dependent on their political stance. Some channels also block certain stories because it doesn't support their stance.

It's the way it is.

We need to have faith in our security services that they are doing their jobs - without knowing what they are doing.

These people will be working around the clock even this time of year whilst we eat mince pies and drink mulled wine to allow us to do that in peace despite the volatile situation the world is in.

Jingling Whilst the public pay taxes that does not entitle them to know the ins and outs of every investigation. Even on its conclusion you, the paying public will not know the entire truth. To think you are entitled or Indeed are being told the truth via various media is just naive.

AspergersMum · 23/12/2018 23:16

I absolutely hope the couple sues the media outlet that named and shamed them. We know their ex-husband and ex-wife, ages, parentage and location of children, jobs, pictures of them socialising, pictures of their house and work van, pictures of them coming back after speaking to police, work hours, views of neighbours. They will never get their privacy back, all for the man's hobby and a vindictive neighbour by the sounds of it, plus some very overzealous media coverage. Incredibly unfair to the couple.

Jsmith99 · 23/12/2018 23:22

The Fail are now saying the couple who were arrested are ‘scapegoats’. Which is a somewhat different tune to this morning when they were calling the couple ‘morons’.

I believe this is what’s known in the gutter press as a ‘reverse ferret’.

Augusta2012 · 23/12/2018 23:25

What the police and beyond are doing to keep our country safe is not for your nosiness or gossip.

That has to be one of the stupidest posts I’ve ever read. Of course it is everybody’s business how we are policed, how we are defended and what laws we are governed by. Because we bloody pay for them and in the event the police cock things up it’s ordinary people who pay the price.

AspergersMum · 23/12/2018 23:25

Oh, and has anybody else noticed that the "killer midwife" story has kindof fizzled out....after her name was released, photos of police searching her home, investigations, Facebook photos splashed across the internet. After all that, with her reputation and career in tatters, nothing. She wasn't charged. Seems that more vulnerable babies die when departments are chronically understaffed and that blaming hardworking staff isn't the answer, which is what plenty of nurses and midwives said at the time. Another case where I hope if that person is innocent, that she sues the socks off the media outlets that helped ruin her life.

HeronLanyon · 23/12/2018 23:27

Scrumptious Niobe has said naively that the police will tell all. I am at the criminal bar. I am very aware of various public interest immunity type reasons for operational lockdown in info. I am also hugely aware of the need for the public to hold the police to account when they fuck up. A lot of things about this incident and subsequent investigation and release of info don’t seem to make sense. Why on earth would you call naive those who question what is going on. I think it naive not to.

Augusta2012 · 23/12/2018 23:29

Christ almighty. The tinfoil hats are out tonight aren’t they? The government is hiding terrorism and race attacks?

Yes dear. Of course they are.

cdtaylornats · 23/12/2018 23:30

The radars at Heathrow are for two things, one detects aircraft the other detects ground movements.

A drone would be too small to be identified by Heathrows miain radar and probably too high to be spotted by the ground movement radar.

One of the things the military could have brought is a radar capable of getting a 3D picture of drone sized objects. No doubt if they could have thought of a way to get a type-45 Destroyer to Heathrow it would have killed the drone.

HelenaDove · 23/12/2018 23:32

Of course we should question why they do what they do. Has anyone seen the coverage about the Lancashire force and the fracking protesters Something that has gone under the radar of dronegate.

PerkingFaintly · 23/12/2018 23:35

Thanks, cdtaylornats, I was wondering whether radars existed that could work over a massive space and still pick up small objects like drones.

MissEliza · 23/12/2018 23:36

I think it's shocking this couple have been called the 'morons who spoiled Christmas' by a newspaper this morning. I hope they get damages from them for it.

HelenaDove · 23/12/2018 23:42

Well im guessing the MOS will be the paper that pays for Christmas 2019 in their case.

Crudd · 23/12/2018 23:47

If there was a terrorist threat, I think we'd know about it. Generally they're good for government's approval ratings.

LoisWilkerson1 · 23/12/2018 23:47

It's hardly tinfoil hat territory to suggest they might keep a terror threat under wraps augusta Why cause mass panic at a busy airport if a white lie would give them more time. Its not unheard of, the police to leak certain details or not let things get out if its for public security or safety. Fair enough.

PattiStanger · 24/12/2018 07:27

I"m not sure about a terror threat being covered up. Did anyone hear the boss of the airport being interviewed while it was closed. Either he was also in the dark or he's an incredible liar, imo he was genuine in believing it was a drone/drones.

I dont think the police and army would have kept up the pretence of bringing equipment and marksmen to play along with a cover up.

I can however believe that some of the reported drone sightings were false, that always happens and maybe some people sent theirs up after the initial reports but I'm yet to be convinced that it was a large scale cover up.

Whoever leaked the couple's name to the press should be throughly ashamed of themselves.

JinglingHellsbells · 24/12/2018 08:10

Maybe you should read what I posted more carefully? You seem to have missed something in my post.

I said we could not expect to know everything that may compromise investigations. I covered what you are accusing me of!

Of course we can't be party to everything. I SAID that!

But you only have to read the headlines today to see that every paper out there including The Times, is calling this the biggest cock up ever, because the sightings were reported by the public.

Drones can fly close to airspace. There may or may not have been any or any that were illegal. The naked eye of Joe Public cannot determine the distance a drone is from prohibited airspace. That's why we need proper security and prevention for things like this.

We do not have the right security in place. Drones can be programmed and their flight set remotely. A terrorist could load one with a bomb and land it right on a runway or in the skies.

All this fiasco has done is show how ill prepared we are for attacks by drones.

Juells · 24/12/2018 09:11

All this fiasco has done is show how ill prepared we are for attacks by drones.

...and give ideas to terrorists :(

PerkingFaintly · 24/12/2018 10:14

^ This.

With JinglingHellsbells' jingling hell's bells on.

ManicUnicorn · 24/12/2018 12:08

The security services foil potential terror attacks far more often than we think and we rarely get to hear about it. They won't release the information because they don't want people to panic.
