""So Henry wasn't always so tough""
""Some days he couldn't steam and puff""
""But then his crew have him special coal""
""Which made his sixteen green wheels roll""
what's in the special coal eh?

""Snow and ice don't bother him""
"Instead they help his wheels to spin""
is that what the kids call it these days?

""Here he comes" the children cheer""
" "the happiest train, all through the year""
What's making you so happy dude?

I've always thought my Henry Hoover looks like he is off his face, he is so unremittingly cheerful.

HopeGarden · 23/12/2018 19:39

Ah yes, the sad story of the engine attached to a train who was afraid of a few drops of rain....

We have a set of the original Rev W Awdry Thomas and Friends stories, and the Sad Story of Henry was a favourite with DS1 for months.
Poor Henry, getting bricked up in a tunnel because he didn’t like the rain Sad
He gets out in the next story in the book though, when Gordon breaks down and they need another engine to pull the express train.

It really doesn’t show the Fat Controller in a good light. The other engines must have been scared to put a foot wrong after that Sad

No wonder Henry needed special coal, that sort of trauma won’t have helped him run smoothly Sad

I thought it was 'The Day Henry met' and now that theme tune is in my head. Yes sanctimonious, but abusive?! My ds obsessed with the books more than the programme. Didn't know poor DH(enry) was bricked in!!

HopeGarden · 23/12/2018 19:41

It was in the very first Railway series book, The Three Railway Engines, before Thomas the Tank Engine was introduced.

mikado1 · 23/12/2018 19:46

Thanks HopeGarden He locks the Big 3 in the sheds also, because they're too good to shunt..

sweeneytoddsrazor · 23/12/2018 19:48

Did Gordon break down? Or did he fall in a ditch when he was having a strop about pulling trucks instead of coaches?

HopeGarden · 23/12/2018 20:14

Gordon genuinely breaks down in the story where they get Henry out of the tunnel. His safety valve bursts.

He’s pulling an express train full of passengers, and they all have to wait while the wall bricking Henry in is knocked down, the rails are relaid, and Henry is started back up.
Those poor passengers must have been waiting around for hours and hours. The Fat Controller really should have organised a replacement bus service or something like that.

You ever listened to.puff the magic dragon? Or watched captain pugwash? We had Seaman Sam (get it?!) & the magic roundabout with 'magic mushrooms' This is what we 1970's children were exposed to lol!

waxy1 · 23/12/2018 20:16

You’ll have to explain “Seaman Sam.”

MissyCooper · 23/12/2018 20:18

Well they do say it is a gateway drug...

DoneLikeAKipper · 23/12/2018 20:22

Boring information alert.

The reason Henry was ‘sickly’ and needed ‘special coal’ is because he was initially designed ‘wrongly’. They incorporated it into the story.

Henry was my favourite, not impressed by him being dumped in the newer series.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 23/12/2018 20:27

There is no Seaman Sam in Captain Pugwash. There used to be a myth that there was characters named Seaman Staines and Master Bates and Roger the cabin boy. None of this is true. There was a Master Mate, Tom, Willy and Cut throat Jake.

Chocolate50 · 23/12/2018 21:15

Oh yes it was Master Bates! I remember now. Not seaman staines. He was bates because he had some sort of speech problem & kept getting his words & phases muddled. Ah. But they were the days lol

My son was "designed wrong!ly" - Comberton defect from chromosome issues. I feel like we need to find the original and bond with him properly. DS likes Thomas and Bertie

I too thought this would be about the ghastly child Henry from The Archers. It would explain everything.

DogInATent · 24/12/2018 00:07

New series, pah.. there is only one Thomas series other than the books, that narrated by Johnny Morris! (and it includes Henry being walled up)
