How can either of those long distance relationships last ...

Cameron Diaz and Jude Law were definitely doomed

It’s quite rural (surprisingly) round parts of Haslemere and Godalming so she will get the tube from Canary Wharf to Embankment, walk across Waterloo Bridge (she does this in the film), catch a 40/50 min train and then walk home. I reckon it will be about 90 mins door-to-door which is pretty standard for London.

Magmatic80 · 24/12/2018 06:42

I always assumed iris and Graham had inherited enough money for their beautiful houses. Might explain how Iris can get a next day flight to LA at Christmas too.

SPARKS17 · 24/12/2018 06:45

I agree they wake up on New Year’s Day nursing their champagne hangovers, it’s fun for a few days then iris and Graham head back to work, kids go back to school. Cameron and Jack are left with the growing realisation that England in January is bloody miserable, grey, wet and dark so they quickly make their excuses and fly back to sunny LA, where they make promises about coming back but it all fizzles out as everyone gets back to real life. The end 😂

MarcieBluebell · 24/12/2018 06:45

Agree Jack Black is nauseating. Hate that Kate's character can't do better.

I watched this and spent far too ling working out how the other two could stay together! !

Rhubarbisevil · 24/12/2018 07:18

Had Skype been invented when this film was made?

I like the dancing at the end.

diamondeaglerangerovercastle · 24/12/2018 08:45

I think the village it's set in is Shere, which is at least two trains (ie one changeover) from Waterloo and 96 minutes..!

MyPoodleisWorthTenofYou · 24/12/2018 09:28

Lol at 90 minutes EACH WAY is ‘pretty standard for london’. That’s three hours of commuting a day! Definitely not standard (unless you really hate yourself). An hour commute is fairly standard I suppose but more than that isn’t the norm at all.

Rhubarbisevil · 24/12/2018 18:04

I beg to differ. My commute to central London is 2 hours and I’m not the only one within this time scale.

Rhubarbisevil · 24/12/2018 18:05

Do you actually work in London Poodle?

Mewe · 24/12/2018 18:14

Did anyone find this film just too flipping long and drawn out?

derxa · 24/12/2018 19:47

Jack Black Angry

I always thought the cottage was meant to be in Godalming, totally commutable.

mmmgoats · 24/12/2018 23:14

I’m always really confused by the fact the car is outside the cottage when Amanda says goodbye to graham but originally the car couldn’t drop her off there because he couldn’t turn around. and then when I was watching the other day, when she runs back it doesn’t look like there’s a road outside the cottage at all?!

I hate the Amanda can’t cry storyline it makes me cringe every time.
don’t mind Jack Black, love Jude and his crying though haha

QueenofmyPrinces · 24/12/2018 23:19

Am I the only one who loves this film? I can’t count how many times I’ve watched it and I even like Jack Black in it. I much prefer his character to Jude Laws.

MyPoodleisWorthTenofYou · 25/12/2018 10:16

I do actually work in London yes thank you. No way would I be putting myself through a two hour commute each way and nor does anyone I know...

rosieposey · 25/12/2018 10:58

The village is Godalming. It was July and all of the shops were set up for Christmas, there was fake snow all patted into the gutters and I saw Cameron Diaz and Jude Law whilst they were filming this ( in summer with a sheepskin coat on ).

iamthewalrusgoogoogjoob · 25/12/2018 11:18

Agree that Cameron can't act for shit.
There's one scene where she's on a date with Jude (oh Jude Wink) and she launches into this speech about her parents and how she can't cry, and I'm thinking 'he never fucking asked you about that'. She's a complete twat.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 25/12/2018 11:30

The bar where Amanda and Graham met up after their night together is in Shere. It's a real place, I've been there.

The bridge which Amanda crossed running to the cottage is in Shere too. I read that the street scenes are in Godalming.

The Iris' cottage really does not exist, it was a set. Although sometime ago on MN there was a Rightmove link circulating with a very similar one at £650.000.

To end with, I love Jack Black in this movie (he is a musician, aa passionate person and knows his worth). And love the film on general. Graham's cow in the shed is utterly ridiculous though.

TheRhythmessCarolMan · 25/12/2018 13:38

@mmmgoats well spotted about the 'road' outside the cottage.

@QueenofmyPrinces I actually love watching this film too, mainly for its simplicity and it's a great one to fall asleep to with a cosy blanket on the sofa with a cat on my tum Grin

Kind of like Love Actually- I've seen it so many times I can almost recite it but now that I've seen it a million times there are elements that annoy me. But that's opening up a whole other can of worms.

DiscoDown · 25/12/2018 16:07

Am I the only one that fancies Jack Black? He's funny and has twinkly eyes!

Greenglassteacup · 25/12/2018 16:14

How does Jack Black get ANY acting work at all? He is fucking awful

Greenglassteacup · 25/12/2018 16:32

Oh God Disco

thebaronetofcockburn · 25/12/2018 16:34

Am I the only one that fancies Jack Black? He's funny and has twinkly eyes!

Yes. His eyes look maniacal and piggy. He's short and fat and minging. Not funny, either.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 25/12/2018 16:38

I would fancy Jack Black in The Holiday too (shame he would be shorter than me though!)
