to get a cat?

Weare hoping to buy a house in the next couple of months, and I really want to get a cat.

I love Siamese cats as I grew up with them, but I know they are more high maintenance. Mine loved attention, and stayed mostly indoors though they did like to wander in the garden sometimes.

The house we are getting only has a small garden and it's on a main road, though the back is quiet. But the main thing I'm worrying about is we both work full time, and I wonder if that's too long to leave the cat alone in the house? Opinions please

I think you'd have to get a pair. Not all Siamese cope well with going out.

You'd have to set up your house first, with plenty of hight stuff to climb on.

How many hours are you out of the house? They are high needs cats.

Any animal is a big commitment, even a cat. They live for around 16 years and do need your presence. All day alone is mean. Also, although I love cats I would never get a pedigree as too many mogs to need homes, and I would never have one unless I lived far from the main road so sadly I don't think you should. Cats should not be contained they are outdoor animals and impossible to restrict to the back

I’ve had cats all my life. I don’t know about Siamese but atm we have a rescue moggy who is fine at being left all day as we are out of the house 4 days a week for 9hrs. She has a litter tray if caught short as we don’t have a flap due to type of doors. This also prevents her from bringing in wildlife as previous cats in different houses have done.
There’s not much to preclude you from having a cat as long as they can go outside in some capacity. Some types of cats are more indoorsy like Ragdolls, too.
Cats aren’t like dogs, don’t need regular walking and sleep a lot! I don’t think it’s mean to leave them all day. They want fuss for 5 mins when we get in, then go back to sleep somewhere. They tend to come ‘alive’ more in the evenings even when we’re here on weekends etc.

I don’t know much about the breed but in general to have a cat and be out all day is quite normal. Our cats are very independent and whether we’re in or not they’ll do what they want in the day and curl up with us in the evening.
I’ve lost more cats living in the country on a 30mph road with not many cars due to our cats then not being used to cars and people driving too fast. On a busy main road they’ve been fine as they’ve just kept away from it.

I don't think it's fair to leave a kitten on their own all day. So go for an older cat or a pair.

If you're on a main road, you'll struggle to find a rescue place who'll let you have a cat.

I would recommend getting a pair of cats and going for something less needy than a Siamese. Shelters often have pairs that need to be rehomed together.

You can totally leave a cat all day if you work full time. They are not bothered.

If you are having kittens, 2 is much better than one - they entertain each other - leads to a lot less wreckage of your stuff and a lot less neediness of the kitten.

Or you can have 1 or 2 older cats which are always harder to rehome.

Op you are my kind of person.
I’m an Oriental/Siamese slave. Unless you’ve been owned by one it’s not easy to understand the connection.

Get two, if you get siblings the breeder should give you a discount.

I can’t help it..... here’s my brother and sister 😁

I have a beautiful Siamese boy. He goes out (catflap) and is well known at several houses in our village...I work full time and he seems totally happy.
Wouldn't like to leave him locked up in the house alone tho. Like other posters say maybe get two? They are amazing cats.

I have a gorgeous affectionate Burmese boy. He doesn’t go outside, and his breeder actually told us that he should be a house cat. We both work full time so he is on his own all day. He sleeps most of the day and is fine, and then gets lots of attention during evenings and weekends.
