Pre-natal surgery? Operating on babies in the womb, what do we think?

Article here

I'm a bit horrified by this, although I don't know the fine details of how they do it? What about the babies' pain experience? It's well documented now that a babies have a limbic (felt) experience in the womb. I don't see how operations can happen without distressing the infant. I expect I'll get a thrashing here. What do others think?

Op....you really didn't read the room well, did you ?

This is a parenting site. Generally, what works best for babies and children is applauded here

Solasshole · 22/12/2018 21:33

I suppose we should just let babies at risk of HDFN die then rather than give them an intrauterine transfusion because some numpty on the internet feels that sticking needles into an foetus is more horrifying than a foetus dying or suffering significant complications Hmm

Glad you patronisingly explained limbic.

You're having a weird reaction to what is unequivocally a brilliant thing.
It's amazing what can be done to help babies these days and I can only applaud everyone involved.

My daughter had a procedure in the womb ( at the time it was a trial )
Which was put a “ balloon “
type thing in her to help her lungs inflate( she had severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia with very little lung growth and many organs in her chest cavity.

She had a 10 percent chance of surviving birth which is why she was accepted on the trial.

She celebrates her 5th birthday next month :)

@BentNeckLady we must have seen one of the same programs.

I thought the whole thing was amazing.

How can anyone be horrified by this Confused? I mean you really have to be quite hard of thinking to be anything other than amazed. Children who might not have survived birth, or if they did would have had life limiting conditions, nowadays have a much greater chance of survival and living full, active lives thanks to scientific advances. It's just so odd to see this as anything but positive!

What is your point OP? What would be your preference? Hmm
