To be worried about the information I’ve got from the breeder

We’re looking to get a lab puppy and have come across the most incredible breeder who is lovely (as far as we know) and have a Facebook page allowing us (interested buyers) to view the litter and their progress. The puppy we were interested in, from the breeder’s description of them, is the smallest of the lot weighing under 2kg at around 5 and a half weeks. Today on their Facebook they uploaded a video of her eating and she eats so un-lab like, very daintily and almost uninterested in the food. We are going to visit tomorrow so will get more information then but is an uninterest in food worrying for a Labrador puppy?

Not in and of itself. Dogs (regardless.of the breed) all have their own moods and personalities. Also, the breeder clearly didn't think it was an issue by the sounds of things, and she has has lots of opportunity to observe the puppy.

They're all different, and some will be less interested in food. My Lab can go off his food, he isn't the sort of lab who'll eat anything and everything. As a pup he was a sturdy little thing, but I've seen dainty looking pups too, they just turn out a bit smaller than others.

Does the breeder seem fine otherwise? You've seen the pups parents, KC certificates, proof of health tests, and are the pups going to be KC registered themselves?

GruciusMalfoy breeder is fantastic. Yes to all of the above. Even taking them to an old people’s home

Remember the puppy is still weaning at this age, they might not be giving her the right food. Ask what food the puppy is on.If it's just solids the puppy might take a little while longer to get use to it. They should be soaking the food, so its very mushy. Remember she has another month or so to be fully weaned off her mum.
A good breeder should of taken all the puppies to the vets, to make sure they are all healthy..and they should be having their first course of vaccinations before you get the puppy.
When we got our Basset Hound, we went to see her and then we're given the vets telephone number, so the vet could confirm to us that the puppy had had her first vaccination and that she was healthy.
So ask what vets the puppies have gone to, and phone them to confirm all of the above..
How exciting having a new baby ❤
I hope it all goes smoothly 😊

At 5 weeks the puppy may well be still feeding from her mum and is being introduced to puppy food. There should be a vast difference in her feeding by 8 weeks.

How old will puppy be when you pick her up to take her home?

elisabethhh · 22/12/2018 13:53

pennyarcade almost 9 weeks

Does anyone know how to insert a picture when the paperclip thingy isn’t there? I think everyone deserves to see the pictures of her in the elderly peoples’ laps

GruciusMalfoy · 22/12/2018 14:22

I'd not be worried very much, in that case OP. She still has plenty of time to get used to eating solids. Keep an eye, as I'm sure the breeders will be doing too Smile

GruciusMalfoy · 22/12/2018 14:22

Not sure how to add photos without the paperclip, sorry! Looking forward to photos if you can though Xmas Grin

HoHoFuck · 22/12/2018 14:27

Are the parents throughly health tested?

I agree with a PP above, at 5 weeks she must be just about weaned. It was probably one of her first tries at kibble.

shockthemonkey · 22/12/2018 14:33

I would definitely love to see her pics! But I don't know how you upload I'm afraid. You could put pics onto your profile and then we can go see them there...

PennyArcade · 22/12/2018 16:07

I'm sure she will be feeding fine by the time you pick her up to take her home. A good breeder won't allow her to leave until the pup is feeding independently. At your pups current age I wouldn't raise it as an issue. I'm sure she will be a typical, greedy Labrador within a week or two

Pic of a supercute Labrador puppy needed! ....Tap the paperclip and it will ask you to upload a pic 🐶

My DDog isn’t a lab, but the breeder sent me a video of one of his first goes at proper eating and he licked the underside of the bowl, looked confused and wandered off. He eats anything and everything now Grin

That’s not her in the last picture though oops- a brother or sister

Lolacabanaa · 24/12/2018 13:26

And on visit yesterday we saw that she was eating much more normally from the bowl- so no worries in that sense

Maelstrop · 24/12/2018 13:30

I'd be more interested in her parents' hip and elbow scores, tbh. Wouldn't touch a lab without very low hip scores and zero on elbows.

Two of mine weren't interested in food as babies. They vary, just like humans.
