To ask how you cook Christmas dinner with small oven

firsthomeChristmas · 22/12/2018 10:24

I know this has been done to death and not an AIBU but would like some quick answers before I go shopping. I've got a small oven so much so that when you put a tray on the first rack it completely covers the bottom rack and nothing will cook that way. I did read about cooking some in the slow cooker but what? I have meatballs, bacon and sausages, potatoes and roast potatoes to get cooked. What liquid would I use to ensure it doesn't burn? How do I stop it going soggy.
This is the first Christmas I've ever done, so I'd like to get it right please!

Do the Turkey first in the oven. When it is resting cook the potatoes in the oven.

Par boil the potatoes, so all you are doing in the hot oven is crisping them up.

If you have space on the hob do the sausages, meatballs and bacon there.

Use the microwave for steaming the vegetables.

Parboil the potatoes
Cook the meat in the oven until it is nearly done
Put your fat that you are cooking the potatoes in in a pan or roasting tin on the hob and put the parboiled potatoes in. Toss around until browned.
Put the meat on the bottom of the oven to finish cooking and stay warm, and the browned potatoes on the rack above and cook until done.

Enjoy your meal

I didn't think the OP was doing turkey

sashh · 22/12/2018 10:37

wrap the bacon round the sausages and stand them up in the SC - no liquid needed, You can do the meatballs as well, if you want to keep the flavours separate put them in pyrex or mugs in the SC.

Do the roast potatoes in the oven

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/12/2018 10:40

You can do chicken in a slow cooker according to a friend.

As good as turkey.

Turkey can be cooked the day before. Roast veg can be cooked before as can stuffing. Decide what your must haves are and which you want fresh out of the oven. My parents used to cook stuffing in a frying pan.

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/12/2018 10:41

Tesco used to do stuffing that you could cook in the microwave and brown under the grill if you want.

iLoveFoood · 22/12/2018 10:56

Easy peasy cook in batches. Do your turkey Sunday, potatoes once that's finished and then your veg.

mindutopia · 22/12/2018 11:16

I cook all the trimmings that need to go in the oven in advance (even the day before). Then cook the turkey. Turkey should ideally rest an hour or two, so while it does, cook roast potatoes and then reheat anything that needs to be re-heated in oven to crisp up. Everything else steamed or boiled on stovetop.

Try a turkey crown. Fits in a small oven and has beautiful breast meat, serves 6.

mummmy2017 · 23/11/2019 21:13

You can buy one of the tabletop cookers, for £40 they cook with light, amazing does everything an oven does.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 23/11/2019 21:49

How many people are you cooking for? A roast is honestly an absolute piece of piss, it just needs timing & preparation.

BrieAndChilli · 23/11/2019 21:55

I have 2 shelves in my (normal) size oven. Plus I then put the slatted bit from the grill pan on the bottom of the oven to crest about her shelf.

Turkey goes in timed to come out an hour before eating when it is then covered in foils and several blankets to keep warm.

Potatoes go in when turkey comes out along with at various points the pigs in blankets, parsnips, stuffing

Ham is done in the slow cooker, veg done on the hob.
Will also have veggie main as well this year so will have to fit that in the oven too.

hula008 · 23/11/2019 21:58

I think OP is probably sorted now, what with it being a year later 😂😂

icantfind · 23/11/2019 21:59

An old fashioned hostess trolley, keeps things warm after they are cooked! I found mine on Facebook marketplace for £14 including 3 lidded Pyrex dishes.

Chuck meat in slow cooker. Switch on and leave it to do its thing whilst you knock back the first alcoholic drink of the day by 8am enjoy the seasonal ambience and make sure the carrots are peeled and the crappiest bits of the sprouts are thrown out into the compost.

Cook spuds and stuffing, the revolting pigs in blankets and any random things your nearest and dearest inexplicably like.

Cook veg and heat bread sauce/warm cranberry or redcurrant sauce/several good slices of gravy.

Slap vast amounts on plates, eat more potatoes than found in a small Irish field, then fall asleep on the settee.

Christmas Dinner at chez Mitz can be done with two small trays, two saucepans and the slow cooker.

Of course, when Himself sticks his oar in, it requires fifteen trays, seven pans, 8 separate kitchen knives, 12 spoons and a kitchen the size of Brazil to produce a bit of meat, potatoes and some almost raw cauliflower whilst covered in so much flour from the unwanted breadsticks that it looks like an outtake from Scarface but I usually ply him with alcohol so he's snoring by the time I need to put the spuds in, thus leaving me to cook unmolested for a change.

I'll be cooking the turkey on the BBQ 😊

Disclaimer: It will be summer where I am, and the BBQ in question is a Weber. It roasts just about anything to perfection.
