The Shallowness of Christmas Cards

I have been thinking of giving up this outdated tradition for several years.

Today I opened* my annual card from "Jacqui and Barry".
In all fairness it is addressed to the previous owners of our house.
We have owned this house for 6 years. The previous owner had been a widower living alone for 3 years after she had a very long battle with cancer.
Yet the card is still addressed to "Mr and Mrs P"
So that's 9 years of sending Christmas cards to a dead person, and 6 not knowing the remaining widower has moved, and many more not realising the major life's events which "Mr and Mrs P" has been through.

And that's the final catalyst for me- no more Christmas cards. Phone calls, texts and emails from now on to my friends and family keeping regular contact with people I actually care about. An annual piece of card covered in glitter which states "Enjoy the season with all its trimmings" (I kid you not) seems shallow and very sad.

*I open it each year hoping to find a recipient address

I see my asterisk explaining why I open it turned the rest of my text bold!
Rookie error

That's quite sad and eye opening ! So no contact at all in between ? Very empty sentiments

I hate Christmas cards and presents, 99% of the time I've not spoken or texted that person in a good 6 months to a year!

I think it’s what you make of it. If this is the only contact you have with someone and you do nothing more than sign your names, it’s pointless.

We didn’t do cards this year because I didn’t have time to sit and write messages in them. I always enjoy the ones that have something written inside. And following from the other post, I enjoy the picture postcards from American friends as well.

We’re expecting our first child next year and it’s been lovely to have all the messages of love and support in cards, even though we’ve also had them by email.
