showmeshoyu not the only one!

limitedperiodonly · 21/12/2018 23:35

That was my dad's tradition on Christmas Eve

Katinkka · 21/12/2018 23:40

I love snowballs. Never had lime in them though. Will try that.

FenellasRedVelvetDress · 21/12/2018 23:49

Ohhhh .......I always used to have a ( bottled) snowball at Christmas from being about 7! Just the one mind!
I have made them since and I have a bottle of avoccaat in the drinks cabinet so I might have one tomorrow.
Is it fresh lime or lime cordial??? Anybody know?? - I’ve got a feeling I used cordial in the past.

Willow2017 · 21/12/2018 23:53

Fresh lime juice not cordial!
They are lovely and far too easy to drink 😁

rosablue · 22/12/2018 00:01

@PiciKitKat I'm 49 and haven't ever drunk a cup of tea either. And I don't ever intend to - it's the smell, it's rank. How anybody can even think of drinking it I have no idea - I hate sitting near to anybody drinking tea as it just puts me off my food.

And that's before the thought of all the associated horrors that come with it - from teabags, cups with a bit of tea left in, drips of tea in the sugar, teaspoons with dried tea on, stained cups and so on...

feeling ill just thinking about it all. eeeuuuwwww.

tillytrotter1 · 22/12/2018 00:13

I'm 70 and have never had a Snowball, I associate them with maiden Aunts. In addition I can't distinguish whisky and brandy!
When I was about 10 or 11 I was allowed to have a small Babycham on New Years Eve, for the rest of her life my Aunt would insist that I had a Babycham, 'because you've always loved them'. For the younger MNers, Babycham was a very very sweet fizzy drink.

Triskaidekaphilia · 22/12/2018 00:17

I think they're grim, but thats cos I dont really like creamy plus fizzy- I don't really like ice cream floats (loved them as a kid though!) and hate cream soda!

blackteasplease · 22/12/2018 00:20

Never had one. I'm 40.

powershowerforanhour · 22/12/2018 00:26

I have never had one.
Eggs, alcohol and lemonade you say?
Whose idea was that? A bunch of drunk students with not much in the fridge?
I like all of those things individually but when I'm on my deathbed I don't think I'll regret not consuming them mixed together.

LizB62A · 22/12/2018 00:33

The pre-mixed ones are pretty poor tbh, I love a proper home-made snowball though - it's what Christmas tastes like to me :-)

UrsulaPandress · 22/12/2018 00:34

Lime you say ....

umizoomi · 22/12/2018 00:35

OMG - it was the Christmas drink I could have as a child/teen about 35 years ago.

Need Roses Lime cordial in it though

KeepServingTheFestiveSnogs · 22/12/2018 01:00

Snowballs. Are. Minging.

(I first drank it as a child too. My MIL loved them. She didn't really drink, so I think of it as a drink non-drinkers like on the few occasions they 'do' alcohol)

Winterberriesonatree · 22/12/2018 01:28

Anyone who was a child or teenager in the 60s/70s is likely to have enjoyed a Snowball. The rest are just missing out.

A group of us from school were taken to a Chinese restaurant for a friend's birthday meal near Christmas in the early 1970s. I had never eaten Chinese food before this, as our parents were frugal and had no money to waste on luxuries.

My friend's Mother had a full-time job, which was very unusual at the time, so they had disposable income. The taste of this food laden with garlic and spices was amazing. To cap it all we were allowed a Snowball each afterwards, before being dropped off at home in her Mother's car.

No-one's Mum had an actual car in those days. If there was a family car, it was driven by the Father of the family. I wanted to be the woman who had her own job and her own car from that day onward, it was inspiring.

GlitterStick · 22/12/2018 01:29

Never tried a snowball as advocaat eggy and I'm allergic to egg! Otherwise I'd be all over it lol

RumbleDoll · 22/12/2018 01:57

My late dad used to make snowballs, lots of cherry brandy, whisked them up until they were really frothy.

My awfully posh grandma had one too many at
xmas years ago.

I still remember her throwing up out of her bedroom window.

Blamed it on the turkey sandwiches.

Choccywoccyhooha · 22/12/2018 02:45

I had two tonight at a friend's house. We always have them on the Friday after the kids break up. Then Christmas can begin.

Yulebealrite · 22/12/2018 07:27

Child of the 70's signing in. We were allowed a snowball or small port and lemon at Christmas too. The port and lemon was better, although I never bother to put lemonade in my port nowadays.

I take your no teas and raise it to no coffee either.

Mummadeeze · 22/12/2018 07:30

I think they are delicious!

thefuriousfuggler · 22/12/2018 10:54

Only one pp has mentioned a cherry. You must have a cherry. It's the law.

BettyBitchface · 22/12/2018 14:27

I first got given a snowball in my teens.

I thought it tasted like lemonade with Copydex PVA glue...shudder.

Advocat makes me feel queasy just looking at it in a bottle, reminds me of pus (sorry for the graphic imagery there).

Any thick creamy booze makes me want to heave actually. Baileys....urg...shudder. The thought of people shoving their dirty finger round the inside of the glass and sucking it off......arrrrrg.....errrr......blurgh.....just.....fucking.....NO.

rosablue · 23/12/2018 16:24

@Yulebealrite I meet your no coffees and add no hot chocolate, cocoa or milk (hot or cold) too... And while I do drink water, I hate the flavour of it, so would avoid if there's any other choice (apart from tea, coffee, milk, hot chocolate etc Xmas Grin).

And yes, my mother is still complaining to this day that I'm too fussy. I just say that I'm particular and that I know what I like Xmas GrinXmas Grin

I now need to dig out the Advocaat I bought a couple of years ago after a wave of nostalgia for snowballs made by my gran - although I never did open the bottle. Maybe tonight is the night (I'm hoping it's the sort of stuff that never goes off).

SantasBassoon · 23/12/2018 16:31

I like a snowball. Not enough to drink it any time other than Christmas morning (cocktail cherry essential), but I can neck enough of them to make buying a bottle of advocaat worthwhile.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/12/2018 19:50

Snowballs are a drink for indulgent relatives to give to children.

This thread has made me nostalgic for Cinzano and lemonade, which used to be the drink offered to teenage girls. Does anyone still drink that?
