Teenagers thinking they can make a mess and throw rubbish, crisps, paper on the floor because the cleaner will clean it up as they are paid to do it!

YANBU and that is pretty obvious.

Supplementary question - are you the cleaner or the parent or a sibling?

nikkylou · 21/12/2018 22:00

Is this in a school, perchance?

masterandmargarita · 21/12/2018 22:02

No it's gross. Same as people who don't clean up after themselves in places like pret a manger or McDonalds

stopitandtidyupp · 21/12/2018 22:14

Yes in a school after Christmas celebrations

Is this a one off or every day?

If every day, Yanbu. Can you speak with the leadership team about having a crackdown? I expect you only get paid a set amount of hours and 'extra' cleaning comes out your own time. A few threats that particularly messy classrooms will be left might help with leadership support. Realistically it's as much the teacher's role to ensure their class respect their room and leave it in a fit state.

If it's a one off, I still don't think you're being unreasonable. But it's understandable. People are grotty when they celebrate together, you only have to look at the state of any nightclub, festival ground or party after the event. It's not just exclusive to teens. Unfortunately it happens, and no amount of bin bags scattered around seems to stop the dropped cups, plates and food. If you're not getting any extra for the 'extra' work though query it. Even if it's a short email of ' the school appeared to have their party last night, unfortunately it was left in a bit of a state, and I had to stay on x hours to ensure it was all up to standard.'

I haven't experienced this at school. I used to clean the sixth form block and the students were really good about putting their rubbish in the bin and clearing up food mess. They were lovely kids.
However I have cleaned a nightclub and god did I earn every penny. Think vomit behind sofas, poo on the toilet floor, broken glass and vomit blocking sinks and used underwear left in the gardenEnvy not envy.
I think the reason our kids were so good was that they actually got to know us. We were there when they were, not just anonymous people coming in to clean when everyone's gone home.
YABU to work extra time without payment however. Tell them the actual hours you had to do and why (take pictures on your phone. We did that with the nightclub mess)

Sorry for the drip feed. I am the teacher. I had this comment said to me 5 times today when I asked students to pick up stuff.

It is the total lack of respect for people that gets my goat and I wonder what their parents teach them at home.
