She's here no doubt spreading the norovirus to every customer and staff member. She looks ill has thrown up twice in staff loos and is complaining that her stomach is in bits. Manager has told her she can go home yet she's still here.

Aibu to think she's being vvvvur to still be here. Potentially spreading the norovirus to every family she serves today now?

Not sure why people are asking “how do you know she has norovirus”, if it is a food establishment and she is a waitress then there should be a 48 hour rule for anyone that shows any symptoms of a bug (are sick), it’s too much of a risk. If several customers do come down with it they could report it to environmental health and establishment could get in trouble. Everywhere I have worked have followed the 48 hour rule, even if someone has morning sickness or are sick with a migraine. If a elderly person was to contract noro it could kill them.

Lynne45 · 21/12/2018 20:26

Maybe she’s pregnant? If it’s definitely a bug then yes, she should leave!

Honeyroar · 21/12/2018 20:26

Yes, but it's not always straight forward. Our work is very tough on Xmas sickness, and our Xmas work arrangements would be lost, so people do tend to come in sick. It's crap for the rest of us, who may well catch it, but I can understand why they did.

In this case the manager should be sending them home, so there's no argument or blame.

jessstan2 · 21/12/2018 20:26

She might not have the norovirus, people do throw up for other reasons so don't panic.

Maybe she didn't feel well enough to travel for a little while. It's very difficult travelling on trains and buses if you want to vomit.

If a lift could have been arranged for her, complete with plastic bags and tissues, that might have been the best thing. Some firms do that.

PunkrockerGirl59 · 21/12/2018 20:27

Any episode of vomiting on MN is automatically diagnosed by the knowledgeable armchair medics on here as norovirus tbf Grin

Creatureofthenight · 21/12/2018 20:48

The manager should insist that she goes home then.

Gingerkittykat · 21/12/2018 21:55

I am diabetic. I am one of the many who can become seriously ill in a few hours from a simple norovirus, my dd was on low dose chemo drugs at one point and I was terrified of bringing bugs home and infecting her (she rarely left home at that point)

The point is someone working with the public shouldn't be at work with norovirus. For most people they will be ill for a day and recover easily but for loads of people it is a serious illness.

Teenagemaw · 21/12/2018 22:10

Theres a girl in my work pregnant who keeps throwimn up... im the only one who knows she is pregnant so presumably everyone else thinks she is ill.

ScreamingValenta · 21/12/2018 22:12

I spent Wednesday sitting next to someone who was coughing and sniffing all day. I now have an ominous itch in my throat Sad.

BottleOfJameson · 21/12/2018 22:12

I would guess that she's pregnant and has told manager but not other colleagues. My friend worked in food prep and had bad morning sickness she was able to continue working as she told management about it as soon as she knew.

BottleOfJameson · 21/12/2018 22:15

If she doesn't know why she's throwing up she should go home and manager should have insisted the second he/she found out. You don't wait to be diagnosed with norovirus before you stop serving food to people. Lots of other causes of vomiting are contagious too. That said I'd be surprised if the manager allowed her to stay without good reason there are very definite rules. Even when I volunteered in a soup kitchen you weren't allowed to serve food if you'd been in the same house as someone who had thrown up in the last few days.

AmyDowdensLeftLeftShoe · 21/12/2018 22:16

She's here no doubt spreading the norovirus to every customer and staff member.

I've been sick at work from being pregnant, being hungover, having a migraine and from eating food I am intolerant to on different occasions. Vomiting is not an indication of just norovirus.

Mummysharkdodododo · 21/12/2018 22:22

I can't stand people who go into work ill. My husband went into work today having spent all night on the loo with a bug he's caught from our children. I got really pissed off with him as he left for work (looking grey!!), he's a teacher and it was the last day of term, so he hasn't actually done any teaching today!! I said to him you are potentially going to ruin someone's Christmas. He's fairly new to the job and didn't want it to seem like he'd pulled a sicky on the last day of term. Even my suggestion to go, tell them he's ill and go home was ignored.

If this woman is ill well yes she's selfish for being in work, but as other have suggested she could be pregnant or have had a heavy night last night. I'd be very pissed off in this situation if she was just ill though.

Toughtips · 21/12/2018 22:45

Well given she said her kids had D and V I'm pretty sure it's more likely to be a bug that morning sickness. Either way I think it's selfish. Every customer she's served tonight now risks being poorly over Xmas.

YANBU, OP. I sort of want to know where you work so I can avoid it! Very poor management from your/her boss, who should insist she goes home. I shudder to think of all the people she is putting at risk and whose Christmasses could potentially be ruined. There is no circumstance in which that is ever okay!
