So had a text through Wednesday giving me options for Fedex delivery, selected leave with neighbour (we all take in for each other so that's no problem Grin) came home Thursday to find a card saying I wasn't in so I need to rearrange delivery...cue rearranging for today with the same caveat.

I've been sat on the sofa, which looks out to the only way in and out of the cul-de-sac all afternoon despite having a million things to do and I'm sure you can guess what the result of this is - obviously I wasn't home and my instructions ignored (saw this on the tracking) luckily the business I ordered from have been brilliant and are recalling that order and sending out for delivery tomorrow with a different delivery courier.

Why, why do the couriers do this time and time again? I know they are under extreme pressure this time of year but they take on a contract to deliver as per their customer instructions. I'm sure that delivery experiences must hurt the sellers a lot with negative feedback, especially the smaller businesses.

AIBU to expect what I ordered? rant over

@MuddlingMackem Yes, thats what i did. I contacted the supplier in the end, which is how i got my delivery eventually but it took a long time to resolve. I didn't want to go into detail how i got it in the end but the supplier was a dogdy company with no contact details on the invoice. I eventually tracked them down under a different company name on the internet via a complaint someone else had put online about the company. Phew!

My frustration with DPD was that once they texted to say "we've tried to deliver today, you weren't in", this was a matter of 3 mins between reading it, they took the delivery all the way back to Bradford! it would've been useful to be able to speak to someone quickly to say, No! you've got the wrong address. The only reason i knew they went to the wrong address is because they included a photo of my front door. It wasn't my front door! they tooed and froed with the delivery for a whole month.

MuddlingMackem · 22/12/2018 00:13

@Shimy, did it not go back to Bradford because that's your delivery depot? Usually the parcel would go back to the depot if it couldn't be delivered.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 22/12/2018 00:28

DPD give you an hour slot - great if they actually deliver to the right house- but I've had several parcels delivered to the wrong address. There is someone in or I've asked them to put in a safe place, and then I get a message it is delivered and a photo sent of someone else's house. I then had to wait several days while they try to retrieve it and redeliver.

Our dpd driver is normally great but a few months ago I ordered something on behalf of the school PTA to be delivered to the school. The driver delivered it to a random house on the same street even though it clearly had the school name and address on and the school was open. The address label had my name and phone number ( Hmm ) on so I got a call from the lady it was delivered to to let me know. She dropped it round to the school for me.
This week I’ve had a nightmare with our amazon driver, 3 times he’s tried to deliver the same parcel but he’s not been able to find it in his van. It’s a laptop as well so an expensive item to lose. Amazon eventually sorted it and sent it via dhl who left it with a neighbour even when they were told to leave it in our parcel store.

Gudgyx · 22/12/2018 00:58

I deliver for amazon occasionally- their gps system is a complete nightmare. Sometimes sends you in the general vicinity of the address, a lot of the time sends you somewhere that doesn’t even make sense. It’s as frustrating for us as it is for you. I’ve found myself googling addresses, house names, towns etc when I’ve been sent somewhere random, just for the slightest hint of an idea of where I should be!

The flex drivers for amazon get delivery blocks, largest is a 4 hour block I think. You get paid £12-£15 an hour as standard, can take anything from 2 to 60 parcels in that time. This time of year though, the pay more than doubles and some of the drivers are getting over £100 for a 4 hour block.

Irritating though when the customers safe place states ‘shed’ and you get to the address and the customer has no shed. We don’t get to see the full description you type in, only the first few words. I tend to find the safest place possible on the premises and leave a card stating where. I go by what I would like a driver to do, I’d rather have my parcel than wait another few days on someone else taking it back out.

We do get penalised if they go missing though. 3 reports of a missing parcel and you’re out. I’ve only had 1 in 2 years so not too bad.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 22/12/2018 07:11

I think they do a really tough job with crappy conditions, so I try and cut them some slack.

One thing that does piss me off is lying. Don't tell me you've attempted delivery when I know you haven't. It's easy for me to prove as well, because I have CCTV covering my drive and my front door. Customer services back down when being told that I'm happy to send them footage showing that nobody's come near the place at the time of the "attempt".

OliviaStabler · 22/12/2018 07:16

If i was a delivery driver being paid a pittance, id struggle to give a fuck either

So anyone who isn't a high earner shouldn't give a shit about their job?

Bibijayne · 22/12/2018 07:24

I'm with you OP.

We've a few different drivers where we are (central biggish city). Some are amazing! The Parcel force guy, DHS, DPD, royal mail. A few variable - Amazon (depends on who is delivering... But exposed to the elements in a small garden on a busy road is not with my neighbour. And others truly terrible - Hermes and the driver who tried to assault a pregnant woman because she wanted to note the damaged parcel (items could have been missing) when signing for the order.

Most of us have done poorly paid and stressful work - never an excuse to not do your job.

HollyandIvyarelivingitupagain · 22/12/2018 07:27

I have had this week off so have been around for most deliveries.A better year than last year when my mum's wine was delivered to a retirement home,in the same town at least.
The 'thing' in our street seems to be putting thing by you front door and not ringing the bell. One parcel even put under the door mat.I had to rescue several parcels for my neighbours yesterday as it has been raining heavily again and they had been dumped by their doors.

Suziepoozie · 22/12/2018 07:32

ASOS switches betweenness DP and Hermes in my area. DPD is always on time. Every time they’ve used Hermes it’s been at least a day late or completely lost.

Yesterday a parcel arrived a day late (I pay for same day delivery) and I felt guilty for being annoyed when I saw the woman was about eight months pregnant with other kids in the car. Still, what’s the point of paying for next day delivery if they don’t even update you it’s late?!

Bibijayne · 22/12/2018 07:38

Agree @Suziepoozie- though I think sometimes when goods are delayed their held up at the depot, or the retailer sent them too late. In which case it's not the drivers fault.

Was chatting to our postie yesterday (waiting for a bank card that was supposed to have been sent special delivery) and he said the bank's often say they've sent something royal mail - but they've actually sent it via another courier who holds on to it then pays Royal Mail a bulk rate to deliver for them. He said UK Mail were the worst for it. Which is why some post takes a lot longer to arrive than it should if sent first/ second class. Was useful to know! Incidentally bank then had to o apologise because despite authorising a special delivery they had indeed abet it via UK mail instead.

Ergh!

Minniemountain · 22/12/2018 07:39

My order which Hermes put the wrong label on (got someone else's with my tracking details) finally turned up yesterday. So now I've got to return an item I no longer need and the company I bought it from take a week to reply to emails Angry

Bibijayne · 22/12/2018 07:39

Thanks for all the info @Gudgyx !

Biker47 · 22/12/2018 07:47

DPD never drops off at a neighbour, even though that's what I tell them to do when my app flashes up about 5 hours before my delivery is scheduled for. Don't actually know if he even tries to deliver to a neighbour or not.

Then you have the Amazon delivery who lie about attempting delivery at all, and have to come back the next day.
