I know this is not BU question, but I’m desperate! I’ve been trying my doctors all morning, but engaged. Probably hectic as so near Christmas Sad

My 4 year old boy was sick on Sunday, then 12 hours later, then 48 hours later and again last night. No other symptoms, and very hungry between it all. No diarrhoea, no temperature, no one else has it in family.

What could it be? Has anyone encountered a bug like this?

I’ll keep trying the doctors, but just wanted to see if anyone had been through similar.

Did you feed him normally in between? Sometimes that can have the effect of keeping the bug alive so it doesn't go.
Even if they say they are hungry it's best to go for minimal food. I've just water for 4 hours, sips not glasses. Then if no problem a plain biscuit or toast (dry) then 4 hours and same again. Building up to a light meal, no dairy, no meat, not too fatty so easily digestible.
My mum (nurse) used to do this. Water can be substituted with flat lemonade as that often helps too.

Is he actually I’ll or just ludicrously excited?

PotteringAlong · 21/12/2018 13:13

*ill

One of mine had this. Lasted about a week then went. Must have been a bug. If they’re fine in between then I wouldn’t worry too much unless it goes on for over a week.

NotAnotherUserName5 · 21/12/2018 13:16

Thank you for the reply. Really helpful Smile

I fed him normally when he went almost 48 hours without being sick.

I think there could be something in what your saying, regarding minimal food and keeping it plain. Maybe I need to do it for a few days, before I introduce nicer foods.

It’s very hard to see him so hungry Sad

One of mine had this for nearly 2 weeks when they were younger. To begin with I only fed them food from the BRAT diet (banana, rice, apple and toast) but they still kept vomiting.

In the end I starved them of food for 24hrs and only have them water. It may be a coincidence but only after starving them did the vomiting stop.

Hope your little one gets better soon.

Could it be an ear infection? DD had similar a couple of years ago, she was sick on and off for a few days as it seemed to get better and then flare up again. The doctors fobbed me off with the "just a virus, ride it out" line until her ear started leaking green fluid then they realised what it was and prescribed antibiotics which sorted it out.

Buggeroffbingbunny · 21/12/2018 13:21

A stomach bug can cause short term lactose intolerance. Try cutting out dairy for a week or so.

adaline · 21/12/2018 13:30

Best thing in my experience is wait until water is kept down for 12 hours, then the BRAT diet for 48 hours, then slowly back onto normal food.

Hodgehegg · 21/12/2018 13:32

We have the same bug! Its dreadful. Our youngest was sick on/off from Thursday night through to the following Tuesday night but seemed ok in himself then the upset tummy started which we still have almost 2 weeks later. His brother was sick just once on Friday night with the terrible tummy only kicking in the following Wednesday. I can see how its spreading as they are fine inbetween but obviously still contagious. Mine are on dry foods but isn't helping much!

NotAnotherUserName5 · 21/12/2018 13:42

PotteringAlong-I don’t think so, unfortunately! Let’s hope that’s not next though Xmas Shock

It’s reassuring to see others have/had similar experiences.

It’s a strange one!

Hodgehegg-hope your little one is better soon

Has he had a cold? Maybe teething? My little one did this for a week, every evening around the same time. It was really mucusy so I think it was a build up of phlegm in his tummy Sad

PaddyF0dder · 21/12/2018 13:57

If the kid is otherwise well then it won’t be anything too important.

Peeing? Pooing? Active? Happy and playful? Breathing without difficulty? Hungry for food?

If so, you don’t necessarily need a Doctor. It’ll be a self-limiting viral thingy.

Elphie54 · 21/12/2018 14:00

When my dd had a stomach virus we were told to keep it really simple for 2 days after she vomited, and then not introduce things that are too “rich” for about a week. Doctor said stomach can’t handle it and it just set her back further rather than getting better.
