So after a long GP appointment, he finally prescribed me what I used to be on in my country of origin (which worked).
Went to pharmacy and they said they didn't have it in stock. I told them it was quite urgent, and could they try to get some for me to start today.
No problem.
Went across the road to get a coffee and I was on cloud nine, like the weight of 1000 years was lifted off me.
Went back across to see how pharmacist was getting on, only to be told that this medication is not in stock with their wholesalers and there are no plans for it to be so unless another pharmacy has it, I'm unlikely to get it.
I want to cry. I know this medication exists because the GP looked in his big book of medications before prescribing it.
It's like the biggest lift of my life followed by being sent to ground with a painful thud.
Please tell me that the wholesalers will get this medication in quickly?
If it's prescribed, surely the wholesalers will get it in?

Do you have any other pharmacies you are able to get to? I used to work in one, and often different chains have different supply chains; so hopefully another will be able to get it for you! If it’s awkward to travel maybe phone around a few and ask? Good luck

Allthewaves · 20/12/2018 13:40

You need to go round a few different pharmacies to see if they can source the drug

AnotherOriginalUsername · 20/12/2018 13:43

What is the drug? There are occasionally manufacturing problems which means things can be out of stock for a while

ItIsChristmasTime · 20/12/2018 13:43

I think you need to ring round all of your local pharmacies until you find one that does have it in stock. Good luck.

Thistles24 · 20/12/2018 13:46

If you’re willing to name the medication, somebody on here might be able to give you up to date information. The books the GPs use aren’t always the most up to date version, and if it has stopped being manufactured in the past year, for example, the GP is unlikely to know. Likewise, if there’s a long term manufacturing issue.

bobstersmum · 20/12/2018 13:47

I use an excellent local online pharmacy, I can give you their name if you like, if anyone can get it, they can.

Tony2 · 20/12/2018 13:48

This is odd. Any pharmacists out there? Do they not have some sort of Duty of Care to the patient to find the medicine elsewhere? I'm reasonably human, I wouldn't dream of shrugging my shoulders like this, I'd say take a seat whilst I ring round other pharmacies to find it. Wouldn't everyone? I know people are busy, but surely. My sympathies.

Punto1 · 20/12/2018 13:49

The pharmacist has said she will ring around to see if anywhere has it in stock. It wouldn't be a frequently prescribed drug, I know that from the years I was on it in my own country, but they always had it the next day. But the pharmacist telling me that the wholesaler couldn't tell her when they would have it in stock?

I don't know whether I can go to a different pharmacy chain. I didn't get the prescription, the GP sent it straight through via email to the pharmacy.

Could the pharmacist give me the printed prescription to bring to Boots or something?

Try an online pharmacy. There are different wholesalers or there may be another brand name of the drug. Don't give up yet!

Punto1 · 20/12/2018 13:50

It's agomelatine.

Just have a look yourself online to see if anywhere has it. If they have, you can get a printed prescription and send it to them.

Sirzy · 20/12/2018 13:53

We have had times when we can’t get a specific drug so need to get an alternative prescribed.

We have also had some drugs that one pharmacy chain could never get (they don’t stock it Apparnetly!) so have to use a different pharmacy now

Punto1 · 20/12/2018 13:55

How can I possibly check stocks of a drug online eightoclock?

OP posts:
Punto1 · 20/12/2018 13:56

There is no alternative. Or none that has ever worked for me.

Trade name is Valdoxan.
Search for online pharmacy, select one, then search for Valdoxan on their site.
e.g. www.lloydspharmacy.com/SearchDisplay?categoryId=&storeId=10151&catalogId=10152&langId=44&sType=SimpleSearch&resultCatEntryType=2&showResultsPage=true&searchSource=Q&pageView=&beginIndex=0&pageSize=12&searchTerm=valdoxan#first

You could give then a ring to check it's in stock but it's listed there so presumably they do normally have it in.

Munchyseeds · 20/12/2018 14:08

Looks like lloyds pharmacy online have it in stock

Punto1 · 20/12/2018 14:13

She just rang, it will be in tomorrow!

It's only one more night I have to get through without it. Happy again.
