For thinking he may get laughed at

FIL is thinking of starting to play golf (he's very serious on it, buying kit and having lessons atm etc) so we're looking to buy some golf shoes for him for Xmas.

He's spotted some boot looking ones that are his style, but also they don't seem to be so popular and I'm worried they're not the trend! He's doing this for a social aspect too so I don't want him to be snubbed, or look out of place.

What's "trendy" on the golf course ladies - some of you must have hubbies or dads who are keen players? What sort of thing do they wear? He's very stylish generally, late 50s and budget isn't an issue.

TIA!

Seriously Hmm He should wear whatever he likes.

Augusta2012 · 20/12/2018 11:53

I doubt very much grown men are going to snub anybody because they don’t like their shoes.

NeverHadANickname · 20/12/2018 11:54

I think I'd get him the ones he wants especially if they are his style. I'm not sure I'd want to socialise with people who laughed at me for my choice of footwear anyway so at least he'd know who to stay away from if they did 🤷‍♀️

NonaGrey · 20/12/2018 11:56

You are seriously worried that the other players are going to pint and laugh at your late 50s FIL because if his shoes?

HmmConfused

ApolloandDaphne · 20/12/2018 11:58

I live on a golf course. I see men of all ages, sizes, nationalities play golf on a daily basis. I have never noticed any wearing shoes worthy of comment. As long as they do the job then they will be fine.

Birdsgottafly · 20/12/2018 11:58

If he comes across Adult bullying based on what he's wearing, he really needs to find another Course to play on.

When my BIL and SIL used to be involved in Golf Club Social Life, it was snobbery and cost that could be an issue. They are millionaires but tended to shop at M&S and that budget. They were self made and used their money to help Family. They only used to make their money known if someone was using theirs, to make someone with less, feel small.

Santaispackinghissleigh · 20/12/2018 11:58

Golf shoes are the least of his concerns.
Have you seen golfers trousers?!
Grin

ApolloandDaphne · 20/12/2018 11:59

I have had a look at boot ones. Is the the Footjoy high top trainer style? They look very practical - especially if playing in wet weather.

Notacluethisxmas · 20/12/2018 12:00

Really?

Foamybanana93 · 20/12/2018 12:05

my oh just wears the nike roshe golf trainers, have a look in american golf or in sports direct

LostInShoebiz · 20/12/2018 12:05

Some ladies might even play golf themselves and be able to tell you...

Ski4130 · 20/12/2018 12:09

I really would t overthink it, golf attire looks embarrassing and a bit crap any way you dress it up. My husband’s normally a pretty good dresser, when he wears his golf gear he looks like Jimmy Tarbuck though Grin

RangeRider · 20/12/2018 12:11

Have you seen golfers trousers?!
Exactly ^^. Serious golfers have zero style so will look down on him for wearing the wrong (normal) trousers. Anyone else will be too busy worrying whether he'll do better than them when he hits the ball.

sirmione16 · 20/12/2018 13:04

Cmon I know he's a grown man etc, but he'll want to know he's wearing the "right" thing I guess, and I'm a perfect world there'd be no judgement in life. But there is. And we want to get him ones he'll feel comfortable wearing amongst others.

If the answer to my "conundrum" is "it doesn't matter one tiny bit" then yay! And I'll buy him the ones he likes. I was just checking.

@Foamybanana93 thank you! This is all I wanted from this thread lol AIBU is so brutal

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/12/2018 13:13

Surely it depends what type of golf club he plays at? There's everything between council run pay and plays where anyone can go, wearing anything they like and stuck up fancy ones where membership costs a fortune and that have rules about needing to play in a collared shirt, won't admit women and it's all about making contacts with the right people.

WhoIsBU · 20/12/2018 13:26

I cant help with the actual question but just to say, YADNBU to ask. Especially if his golf club is anything like the one my DF plays at.. you'd want to have the right gear Grin
Just like if I was joining the gym, I'd want to fit in and not look like a tube. Hopefully a trendy pro golfer will be along soon...

Unless your fil is a teenager I wouldn’t worry about it

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 20/12/2018 13:48

OP, you have clearly not been down a golf club recently, what passes for fashion there would not look out of place during the clown car act at the local circus.

sirmione16 · 20/12/2018 13:58

@PanGalaticGargleBlaster hahaha no I haven't been down, though after how generally unsuccessful this thread has been im going to have to go park up outside one and sit and take notes probably. Apparently that's more reasonable than bloody asking Grin
