To let my kids miss the last 2 days of school

I’m feeling guilty.

There’s Norovirus going round my children’s primary school. Children are dropping like flies. The school have relaxed their sickness policy, so they now give calpol to children and there is no exclusion policy for d&v. If the child seems well enough after vomiting in school, they can remain in school. Similarly, if they have vomited all night and the morning of school, it’s in the discretion of the parent to decide if they want to send them in.
So, Norovirus is spreading like wild fire around the school. A child was sick in the toilets my children use yesterday, and was allowed to stay in school. Another class mate was off for the morning because of vomiting but came in in the afternoon.

I’m so anxious that the children will get the bug for over Xmas.

Husband has finished work for Xmas so I’ve let them stay off today and tomorrow.

AIBU?

They don't do anything in the last two days anyway. I think it's fine.

Greensleeves · 20/12/2018 09:23

YADNBU Shock

wintersontheway · 20/12/2018 09:24

No doubt you'll get a load of negative remarks on this but if it were me I'd keep them off also, yes the chances are they may have come into contact with the virus, equally you can pick it up anywhere but I know what you mean and yes two days of watching films and not a lot else in school I'd do the same .. Hope you have a lovely Xmas x

Lougle · 20/12/2018 09:26

I'm really strict on absence with my children, so if they aren't vomiting or with fever, they go in. However, in this case, it sounds like you'd be pretty much telling the truth if you called in with norovirus now, because what they are doing is just plain stupidity. I'm shocked that a school would do this Shock

Sirzy · 20/12/2018 09:27

Until you said about the schools lax take on the exclusion period I was going to say yabu.

In that case I would keep off without doubt

Lake2 · 20/12/2018 09:27

Thank you! I have the same guilty feeling I’d get when I was young and stay off school when I didn’t really need to.

@wintersontheway Thank you- enjoy your Xmas, too! X

As a teacher I would be bloody furious if the school relaxed the sickness policy. I would certainly not be sending the children in if their classmates were allowed back despite vomiting. Poor bloody teachers though, its not like they can just take the next 2 days off Xmas Sad.

Smurfybubbles · 20/12/2018 09:28

YANBU why the hell are the school allowing sick children in, it's madness? Maybe their attendance rates are borderline and they're trying anything to salvage them but still not an excuse. I would 100% keep my kids off, d&v bug could completely ruin Christmas for you and your DC's.

MrsJayy · 20/12/2018 09:29

The school is letting pukey kids stay at School? That is grim. Yanbu fingers crossed they don't get it

Holidayshopping · 20/12/2018 09:29

Where is this school? Sorry, but the 48 hour guideline are in place for a very good reason! Have they put that in writing?

You are definitely not being unreasonable.

wintersontheway · 20/12/2018 09:30

My children's school is 12 hrs post last episode which I think ridiculous, all about the stats I guess

Lake2 · 20/12/2018 09:30

@Lougle

I agree! The head has introduced this to improve attendance. I don’t see how infecting the whole school will improve attendance.

In my defence, one of my children have 100% attendance and the other has been off 1 day this academic year.

YANBU, the school sounds nuts. When noro went round DDs school they did the opposite, encouraged parents to keep children off if they even suspected they were coming down with it rather than wait until d and v started.

Holidayshopping · 20/12/2018 09:30

I’m surprised the teachers aren’t in mutiny tbh-they are all going to end up spending the next two days mopping up sick and changing pooey clothes and then they will spend the next week ill themselves.

I’m surprised the local papers haven’t picked this up.

Pinknike · 20/12/2018 09:31

I was going to come on and say yabu, but under the circumstances yadnbu.

That's bloody awful.

Tohaveandtohold · 20/12/2018 09:31

YANBU. Certainly don’t want a sick child at Christmas. Most schools here are already going on break anyway.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 20/12/2018 09:31

Keep your children at home - the school is being utterly irresponsible. One of my DC ended up in hospital in isolation on a drip after contracting Norovirus

halcyondays · 20/12/2018 09:31

yanbu. Why on earth aren't they sending them home if they've been sick in school? I get annoyed as our school never seems to mention the 48 hour rule but they do send them home if they're sick in school. I'd have thought all schools would do that, at least.

Lake2 · 20/12/2018 09:32

@HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone

I am a part time teacher in their school, hence how I know which children have d&v. I’m just washing my hands like crazy and praying one doesn’t vomit under my watch in the classroom!

OP posts:
halcyondays · 20/12/2018 09:33

And can you tell them exactly why you're keeping them off and send them a link to the NHS page about it?

CleverWittyUsername · 20/12/2018 09:33

That school is ridiculous! I thought nhs guidelines were 24-48 hours, how is the school allowed to do this? Def NBU

MamaLovesMango · 20/12/2018 09:34

I was going to say you can’t really do that until you said there is no exclusion policy for d&v. that’s madness not to mention dangerous. No wonder they’re dropping like flies, the exclusion policy works very well to contain infection.

To be honest if this was my DC’s school I’d probably be looking at moving schools.

MamaLovesMango · 20/12/2018 09:34

So no, YADNBU!

Holidayshopping · 20/12/2018 09:34

To be honest, if you’re working there now-you’ll probably get it and give it to your own kids whether they’re at school or not.

I wouldn’t be working for an SMT who were so monumentally stupid.

kaytee87 · 20/12/2018 09:35

Wow! Yanbu. The heads putting the children and her staff at risk with her new policy.
