AIBU to be concerned about DD's health?

Posting here for traffic. Sorry.

DD is 5. She has been suffering from what seems to be asthma for a while now and is struggling a lot with coughing at night. The inhalers don't have this fully under control.

She is around average height for her age and this morning when she was in the bathroom at the same time as me, she stepped on the scales and it turns out she's only 2stone 8lbs. I checked the growth charts online and this plotted her on the 9th centile.

She also has developed some faint dark circles under her eyes in the last week or so and has also been complaining of pain in her sides and this morning woke up with a sore neck (I'm hoping this would just be linked to the coughing so much at night causing her to strain certain muscles).

I'm on my own with the kids so cant help but worry. I'm hoping you guys can reassure me in some way as I called the doctors on Monday but they can't fit her in until Friday. Thanks.

I'd suggest getting her tested for allergies. This is a common cause of dark circles ("allergic shiners") and poorly controlled allergies can make her asthma worse. We call this the "one airway, one disease" concept.

agnurse has said exactly what I was going to say. Allergy UK run a really good helpline the nurses there are brilliant they will run through those symptoms and give you some ideas, also tell you what questions to ask the doctor:

how long has the asthma being going on for? Allergies maybe?
What sort of xmas tree do you have? Pets?

DD had her appointment this morning. GP said her breathing rate is low (I think it was low he said?) and her heart rate is high. He said the cough sounds as though she is trying to bring up phlegm. He felt that the sore neck & sides would be down to her coughing. He believes she has a viral infection now and has put everything down to that. If she goes off her food, stops drinking or needs the toilet less, I've to bring her back in. Seems to be good news at this point.

Hope she improves over the weekend OP.

Lots of asthmatics have the dark circles under their eyes. It sounds like her asthma is not well controlled and whether this is temporary and caused by viruses or not, you should ask for an emergency appointment with your GP (I imagine it would need to be an emergency one it being so close to Christmas now). There’s a lot they can do to help with asthma, even giving her a short course of steroids if necessary. You don’t need to panic, but do make sure you take her to the GP as asthma does need to be taken very seriously as it can turn nasty quickly XXX
