Unicorn hair for. 10 yr old ds?

Evergreentree · 19/12/2018 08:00

Just not sure. Thoughts? My ds is 10, very artistic and creative. Loves the use of colour and always has a musical instrument in his hand. He would like some of the unicorn blue shades put into his hair. I spoke with school and his class teacher who said subtle limited shades would be ok, it would have faded further by end of Christmas hols. But dh is not comfortable with it and has asked me not to do it. What would you do?

My DS12 has blue hair quite a lot, he loves it. I buy the wash out wax off EBay, it’s brilliant.

I would do it!

steff13 · 19/12/2018 08:02

As long as it's ok with the school, is be ok with it. I will let a child bleach his/her hair at that age, but a temporary or semi-permanent color would be ok.

RedHelenB · 19/12/2018 08:03

Not for school no.

masterandmargarita · 19/12/2018 08:06

Yes absolutely

steff13 · 19/12/2018 08:06

Ugh, stupid typos. I wouldn't let a child bleach their hair at that age.

Hidethecrisps · 19/12/2018 08:07

I’d play around with hair chalk in the holidays. Fun colours but washes straight out. You can dye it then if he really loves it and are sure School will be ok. Personally I’d probably stick with the wash out stuff though, especially if his dad isn’t too keen.

SoupDragon · 19/12/2018 08:08

What colour is his hair naturally?

BarbarianMum · 19/12/2018 08:08

Age 10, no I wouldn't. Not if his dad wasnt happy.

Puggles123 · 19/12/2018 08:10

Use hair chalk as someone has said, if dad isn’t also happy and some of those dyes can cause havoc on hair.

LagerthaTheShieldMaiden · 19/12/2018 08:11

Why isn't your husband comfortable with it?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 19/12/2018 08:16

I wouldn’t bleach but if he was blonde I’d allow colour over the school holidays

ThatIsNachoCheese · 19/12/2018 08:17

I don't know why you wouldn't let him, why isn't your dh wanting him to do it?

isupposeitsverynice · 19/12/2018 08:19

we dyed ds' hair blue in the summer hols. it's pretty much gone now. not all temporary colours are equally temporary...

SoEasilyCaught · 19/12/2018 08:35

I'm really surprised that school are OK with this. My kids' schools insist on natural hair colours and no 'extreme' styles.
My DS dyes his hair for the summer holidays and dyes it back or has it cut out/ short before going back in Sept.
It's a dilemma about DH though... it's not his hair... but if he thinks it'll look bad then his heart is in the right place.
Temporary hair chalk is the way to go

knittedjest · 19/12/2018 08:42

Hair chalk or colorful sprays, sure, but not dying it. That's just another thing where I'm like what's the rush with today's parents? By the time they get 15 or 16 there's going to be nothing benign left for them to explore and express their own sense of freedom with and that's when they start getting into trouble.

Perfectly1mperfect · 19/12/2018 08:47

If it means dying his hair, then no, I wouldn't as he is only 10. I'm not really strict on much but I wouldn't let my kids dye their hair until much older.

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 19/12/2018 08:55

You can get some great coloured own brand sprays in Superdrug for very cheap - £2.99ish and it is often buy one get one half price. My (blonde) DD loves My Little Pony and for parties and holidays often asks to have her hair like various ponies, so I’ve tried them all now! And it just washes straight out. This is the blue one www.superdrug.com/Superdrug/Superdrug-Colour-Hairspray-Blue/p/718438?gclid=CjwKCAiA9efgBRAYEiwAUT-jtNcAMLXlh5hOvVCnvBW0_07ZCuCmmXIRGn3ZEErbm35mm-3V5ALQnRoCiTYQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

formerbabe · 19/12/2018 09:05

I would definitely not allow this for school.

I bought my dc some of those coloured hair sprays from Superdrug. They had fun spraying stripes and spots on their hair in the school holidays.

I don't see why it's relevant that your ds is creative and artistic.

Evergreentree · 19/12/2018 09:40

Answers to some questions. His hair is blonde, school are a bit more relaxed as most of the children have additional needs and the colours are subtle, the unicorn shades are quite muted but certainly take the point that sometimes temporary is less temporary than you think! You are probs right what’s being artistic got to do with it just trying to build a picture of who he is and this is just the sort of thing he’d ask as I see him more like that than a child with some additional needs. His dad isn’t keen as he prefers the status quo and this would be a step too far for him I suppose.

Hm. Tricky one. My gut says “nah” because I think 10 is a bit young to go out with dyed hair.... I feel it’s one of these tires of passage where it’s “muuuuuum can I dye my hair blue?”
“No”
“Why not”
“Because”
[repeat to fade]

However getting on board with it could prevent him going for the food dyes or something and ending up with a blue face and ears as well as hair.

Tricky. But if it was my DC I’d probably say no and let them DIY when they’re a bit older.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 19/12/2018 09:47

*rites of passage

wink1970 · 19/12/2018 09:49

Hi OP, if your child is artistic and this is his way of expressing himself then go for it! It sounds like your DH is in denial of some sorts so override him but talk him through why after doing it (good for Son's self-esteem, encouraging expression etc)

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/12/2018 09:51

Do it!
I bet he'd look awesome!

BeanTownNancy · 19/12/2018 11:27

Another vote for chalk. Less chance of a reaction (allergy etc) and you can change it up every day if you get a few colours.

If his dad really kicks off it can be washed out. He might be more accommodating if he knows it's totally temporary.

recklessruby · 19/12/2018 11:34

Out of interest why is his dad so against it? Especially as school is ok and it's blonde hair so wouldn't need bleach first and blue washes out quickly my dd and I found that out. Green stays forever!
My dc have been through most colour as teens but ds had the spray on stuff when he was 11. It washed out next wash.
