AIBU for wanting to buy new sofa & chair?

So the crooks of my question, am I being unreasonable to want to purchase a new electric reclining sofa and chair?

We purchased relatively cheap sofas (iirc around £900 for three seater, 2 seater and XL footstool) with next day delivery around 3.5 years ago when we bought our new build as we needed something immediately. Since then, I have developed a serious back problem for which I’m awaiting surgery, but this will persist for the rest of my life in one way or another. Our current sofas absolutely destroy my back and increase the distressing neurological symptoms I am experiencing to the point I can only perch for around 15 minutes before I need to get up, they are also very low which means I struggle to get up from them now. The only place I can comfortable is one the reclining sofa at my mothers house.

DH thinks I’m being wasteful and dramatic, and I should just put up with it as the sofa doesn’t hurt him, and my symptoms can’t possible be as bad as I say they are... he also suggested seeing how bad I find them after major spinal surgery rather than allow me to have some level of comfort whilst I’m waiting for the surgery, and have someone to sit and relax while I’m recovering post operatively.

As an aside, we have more than enough cash to buy outright, or could easily pay them in finance... money is not actually an issue aside from the fact DH is tight!

AIBU? Or should I just shoot the b**rd? Grin

Could you sell them, that way they're not being 'wasted'? Or compromise and get rid of/move to a different room one of the sofas and get yourself a comfy chair. YANBU to want to be comfortable.

As someone else with back problems, you should go for the option that doesn't leave you constantly in pain with restricted mobility. It's a no brainer, really.

As for dramatic, my bet is that your DH is the type to insist on full rest for a slight muscle twinge.

You might be better with a chair instead of a sofa, if you have the space. You can get ones with great back support.

Orangesox · 18/12/2018 23:14

Jesus I’ve just re read what I posted... I apologise for the fact some of it doesn’t make sense. I’m in very strong painkillers Wink

Yes we could sell or even just replace one of them. But every option has been pooh-poohed and it’s starting to really grate on my nerves now.

I would get a chair and keep the sofa, no point getting rid of nearly £1000 worth of furniture.

Orangesox · 18/12/2018 23:20

Also to add, I wouldn’t just throw the old ones away! I would want to try to sell them on to recoup some money.

I suppose my question really should have been AIBU to expect to be able to be comfortable in my own home!

Get rid of the the two seater and buy your own amazing recliner to replace it. Get a pillow with "Orangesoc's chair" and plop it on said recliner. Then when your DH tries to sit in it tell him to fuck off to the cheap seats.

TrippingTheVelvet · 18/12/2018 23:31

I agree with the others. Buy a chair as a compromise.

BritabroadinAsia · 18/12/2018 23:39

Fellow back pain sufferer here. I spent hours testing out sofas before buying a new one recently, as I know sitting uncomfortably is one of my biggest triggers. Can't believe your DH is minimising your (clearly significant) pain.

Agree that you should buy a really great reclining chair for yourself, and best of luck with the surgery. Thanks

Tellmeagain · 19/12/2018 00:10

Get yourself a reclining/riser armchair, at least until your surgery. My dad bought very expensive ones from HSL and they made a huge difference to his ability to get out of a chair. They are on eBay now - maybe worth looking on there to see if you can find a bargain. Your husband has no idea about your pain from the sounds of things and shouldn't decide this.

Butteredghost · 19/12/2018 00:35

You deserve to sit comfortably in your own house, and you can easily afford it, it's a no brainer! Go and order your new sofa today.

aintnopartylikeansclubparty · 19/12/2018 00:49

Your dh sounds like a dick. Don't order a chair just for you, guaranteed he will end up sitting in it himself since he doesn't actually believe you're in pain.
Buy what you need and tell him to sort his nastiness towards his own wife.

Perfectly1mperfect · 19/12/2018 01:11

It's a health issue and money isn't a problem so I would tell him I'm ordering them whether he likes it or not.

Hope your surgery goes well.
